eling: three years and 300 dates into2021. He’s calling it an “epic FarewellYellow Brick Road Tour,” and he saidtickets will go on sale in North AmericaFeb. 2.
“I’ve had a good run, I think you’d ad-mit that,” John said, adding he wantedto “leave people thinking, ‘I saw the lasttour and it was fantastic.’ ”
So is he actually retiring? John ac-knowledged the question in a joke.
“I’m not going to say I’m retiring andthen do a world tour. I’m not Cher.Though I like wearing her clothes,” saidJohn, who’s known for his wacky on-stage style. He announced he is partner-ing with Gucci for the tour costumes.
John is now performing in his Las Ve-gas residency The Million Dollar Pianoat Caesar’s Palace, which will end aftermore than 200 shows on May 19.
John hinted at Wednesday’s news ina tribute video on his Twitter page, an-
nouncing he is “embarking on the nextphase of his creative journey.”
“I’ve finally decided where my fu-ture lies,” teased the British philan-thropist/pop star, one of the world’sbest-selling artists (more than 300million records) and a major fundrais-er and champion for AIDS/HIV re-search.
“On August 25 1970, Elton Johnmade his US debut in a legendary six-night sold out run at West Hollywood’sTroubadour,” the video’s text reads.“Five decades later he continues to bea creative force moving faster than thespeed of culture. Now Elton’s embark-ing on the next phase of his creativejourney and it will be every bit as sur-prising and powerful as his first per-formance almost 50 years ago.”
John is scheduled to perform a duetwith Miley Cyrus at Sunday’s GrammyAwards, and musicians including Cy-rus, John Legend, Kesha and SamSmith will join him for a tribute con-cert at Madison Square Garden in NewYork on Jan. 30.

tism, says the key is a balancing act be-tween sutures and soap, that “themedical storylines are a hanger onwhich to place more interesting, im-portant, emotional storylines and arcsfor all of the characters involved.”
And while Finger points out thatABC was able to successfully spin offGrey’s with Private Practice (2007-13),other more recent entries haven’t wonviewers over. Quickly failed attemptsinclude CBS’ Pure Genius, Fox’s TheMob Doctor, NBC’s Do No Harm andCW’s Emily Owens, M.D.
“The viewers have to come,” shesaid, attributing the dearth to “howdifficult it is at the networks to createthat sustainable hit.”
David Bushman, TV curator at thePaley Center for Media, says the recur-ring push for medical dramas is nosurprise. “A little bit of this is predicat-ed on trying to duplicate success.”
But he believes public discussion ofhealth care may be sparking interest inthe fantasy version. “What you’re see-ing now is sort of a reaction to all thisconversation ... and how nervous peopleare about it. It’s also why I think you arestarting to see less House and more ofThe Good Doctor — because people arelooking for that reassurance — they’rescared about being able to afford (med-ical care). I think they’re looking forfriendly doctors with bedside manner.”
Life-and-death stakes lend an urgen-cy to hospital series: ABC’s daytimesoap General Hospital has been treatingpatients for 55 years, even if real doctorscan see flaws in their TV counterparts’methods.
“Everyone goes into it with the hopethat you’re going to make the medicalscenes as realistic as possible,” High-more says. “But very quickly, you realizethat you’re telling a story at the sametime, and you have to take certain cre-ative licenses with each procedure.”
Still, medicine is “an endlessly fasci-nating topic,” Finger says. “It’s just oneof those evergreen kind of genres.”

Democracies don’t just die; peoplekill them.
That’s the conclusion of authorsSteven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt intheir carefully researched and persua-sive new book, How Democracies Die(Crown, 320 pp., eeeg).
As tempting as it is for opponents ofPresident Trump — whom the authors,Harvard University professors, call a“serial norm breaker” — to blame him forwhat ails our democracy, he is just oneof many who have changed the tradi-tions of our national political fabric.
“The process of norm erosion starteddecades ago — long before Trump de-scended an escalator to announce hispresidential candidacy,” they write.
At the root, they say, is rac-ism, particularlyracism inspiredby passage of the1965 Civil RightsAct. Couple thatwith the passagethe same year oflandmark immi-gration reform, which empow-ered non-whiteAmericans and
created an animus among white Amer-icans that has triggered a series ofmoves to counter diversity and preservewhite influence.
The authors deftly mine world historyfor other examples of how politicianshave distorted their nations’ less-robust
democracies to enhance their own pow-er. In Venezuela, Hugo Chavez used hissupport among the country’s lowerclasses to propel himself into the presi-dency. He used his advantage to stripaway the opposition’s ability to fightback and eroded what remained of Ven-ezuela’s wobbly democratic traditions.
In nearby Peru, former president Al-berto Fujimori used many of the sametechniques to dominate his nation. ByApril 1992, he dissolved congress andthe constitution. “Less than two yearsafter his surprising election, the long-shot outsider had become a tyrant,” Le-vitsky and Ziblatt write.
The United States is not Venezuela orPeru. Its judicial system is strong andindependent, and enough people inboth parties are firmly committed to therule of law and democratic traditions.
The authors show the fragility of eventhe best democracies and caution poli-ticians who think they can somehow co-opt autocrats without getting burned.
If not a jeremiad against the currentpresident, How Democracies Die pro-vides a guide for Americans of all politi-cal persuasions for what to avoid.
