Holding the Gun

The best way to hold the gun is the way that feelsmost comfortable to you. While practicing to use yournew abrasive blast cabinet, experiment holding thegun in different positions until you find the one thatseems to work best for you. Never aim the nozzle atyour fingers, the rubber gloves or the light.

Using the Foot Pedal

Step down on the foot pedal to allow air to flow tothe gun. Air flow will start as soon as the foot pedalis pressed firmly enough to open the air flow valve.

To stop the air flow to the gun, lift your foot off ofthe foot pedal.

OPERATING BLAST CABINET1. Select the appropriate nozzle for your needs.

2. Set the compressor’s air pressure regulator to 50-125 psi. Do not set the regulator above themaximum 125 psi. Set the Abrasive BlastCabinet’s air pressure regulator to (around) 80 psi.

3. Open the door and place the workpiece you areworking with in the center of the cabinet. Onceworkpiece is in place, close all cabinet doors.Close all latches SECURELY.

4. Place your hands into the rubber gloves (15)inside the cabinet. Make certain your fingers arein the proper positions and that you can easilymove your hands and grip things.

5. Grip the gun with one hand. Point the nozzle atthe bottom of the cabinet and operate the gun fora moment to make certain everything is workingcorrectly. If leaking is detected, disconnect the airhose and have it repaired before using.

6. Hold the material you are working with in yourother hand. Position your fingers so that therubber glove is not in the way of the area you areblasting. You may have to reposition your fingersmany different times during the blasting to ensurethat you have blasted every area of yourworkpiece.

7. Step down on the foot pedal to begin blasting.Aim the nozzle directly at the surface of theworkpiece. Bring the nozzle to within two (2)inches of the workpiece if necessary. Move thegun in a side-to-side or circular motion, alwaysmaking sure that your fingers are not in the way.

WARNING: Do not aim the nozzle at yourfingers, the rubber gloves or the light whenabrasive media is flowing through the gun.

8. To check on the progress of your blasting, liftyour foot off of the foot pedal, release the gunand pull your hand from the glove. Remove your

other hand. After making sure air flow to gun isOFF, open the door and inspect your workpiece. If necessary to continue blasting, follow previoussteps as needed.

9. Once completed, remove your hands from thegloves and shut off the compressor. Open thedoor and remove your material.

MAINTENANCE1. Blasting Gun

- After 10-12 hours of blasting time, the nozzleshould be checked. If it shows uneven wear itshould be turned 1/4 turn every 10 hours of use.2. Caking of Media

- Media caking is caused by moisture in the airsupply or from oily and greasy parts. If this is notcorrected media will not flow evenly and will plug upin the metering valve and the gun. Check airsupply; if water is present install a good moisturetrap. If oily or greasy parts are being blasted, youshould degrease and dry the parts first.3. Reverse Pressure

- If media stops flowing, release foot pedal.Once air has stopped flowing to the gun, place agloved thumb over the nozzle. Make sure that theentire nozzle is firmly covered and no air canescape. With gloved thumb firmly in place overnozzle, push foot pedal down for a couple ofseconds. This will cause the system to back blastthrough the gun and up the media hose. This willhelp loosen any clogs.4. Gun Air Pressure Drop

- Set the air pressure to 80 PSI on the airgauge at regulator. Push the foot pedal whileholding gun and see if the gauge pressure dropssignificantly. If the pressure drops, this indicatesthat there is a restriction is the supply line. Thiscould be a hose that is too small, a reducer or quickcoupler, a plugged filter, or other piping that doesnot allow enough air through. Also if the cabinet istoo far from the air compressor, a pressure drop willoccur. Air supply line should be 1/2" or larger.5. Poor Visibility (Excessive dust)

- Air inlet at front left above regulator, should befree to allow air into cabinet.

- Dust container full and needs to be cleanedand emptied. (latch at bottom of dust collector orremove cover on vacuum.)

- Dust cartridge contaminated. (clean or replacefilter in dust collector, part #29)

WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury, alwaysunplug your tool from both the power supply andthe air supply before performing anymaintenance. Never disassemble the tool or tryto do any rewiring on the tool’s electrical system.Contact Clarke Power Products for all repairs.

!

8

- Media breakdown; Eventually the mediabecomes so small that it is essentially dust. Replacemedia and clean dust collector.6. Poor Visibility (Viewing window)

Windows come with a clear plastic protector onthem. As these become pitted they can be easilyreplaced to extend the life of the window.7. Poor Media Flow

- Check for moisture as indicated above. Installmoisture trap as needed. Replace damp media andclean hoses.

- Holes in media hose will cause poor mediadelivery. Replace hose.

- Debris in media. Replace or filter media.

MAINTAINING SUCTION EFFICIENCYA properly maintained abrasive blast cabinet shouldprovide years of constant service. When productionrates fall the operator can usually locate theproblem by checking:

1. Air Supply- If the pressure gauge on the air pressure

regulator shows an adequate no-load supply (whenthe blaster is not running), press the foot pedal. Ifthe pressure drops more than a few PSI your airsupply is restricted or inadequate. Clean filters andmoisture separators all the way back to the aircompressor. Straighten any kinked lines. Use amaster gauge to check the air pressure or replaceexisting gauge if you suspect it is giving you falsereadings.2. Blast Gun

- The nozzle will wear out eventually. Replace itif it measures 1/16" over its original size or if itshows uneven wear. Adjust as needed for differentmedia and conditions.3. Dust Collector

- Inadequate cabinet ventilation results inreduced cleaning power at the nozzle as well asdiminished view of the work in progress. Use thedust collector’s Filter Cleaning Rod after every 20-30 minutes of cabinet use (more often in dustyconditions). To use Filter Cleaning Rod:1. Turn off the Dust Extraction System, by flipping

the power switch on the front of the LightHousing to OFF.

2. Release the latch and open the cover on thebottom of the dust extraction housing and allowthe dust to drain out.

3. Push the Filter Cleaning Rod several times tohelp “shake” any remaining dust from the filter.

4. Close the cover on the bottom of the dustextraction housing and refasten the latch. Makesure cover is closed tightly before turning DustExtraction System on again.

Empty dust collector at least once a day. Removefilter and blow out occasionally to keep the dustcollector or vacuum working efficiently. Replace asneeded.4. Media

- Use quality blast media sized to the job. Dampor dirty media can bring blasting to an instant halt.Store media in a dry area and load the appropriatequantity. Add enough abrasive blasting media tohave 6" deep of media on top of the tank drain door.If you run out of media as you are blasting addenough so it keeps circulating to the gun. Themedia will eventually break down or get toocontaminated to use. The less there is in thesystem, the less you will have to replace.

Abrasive Media Quick Reference Guide
