graduate of the U-M Law School and an attorney with Warner

Norcross & Judd. He was mayor of Grand Rapids from 1991 to

2003, his twelve-year term the longest in the history of the city.

Funds given upon his retirement formed fellowships for GVSU

students to work within the city government. John has been a

Trustee of the GVSU Foundation since 1998, and Chair of the

Board of the Clarke Historical Library since 2000. In 2000, John

received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan

Historic Preservation Network and in 2004, was acknowledged

with an Honorary Doctorate in Public Service from Ferris State

University.

Hank Meijer, 53, is co-chairman and CEO of Meijer, Inc.,

which currently operates 170 self-service combination

supermarket-discount department stores in five states. Hank

joined the family retail business at the age of eleven as a

bagger. After spending several years working up the ranks of

the newspaper business, from reporter to editor and finally

publisher, Hank returned to Meijer in 1979 as assistant

advertising director. In 1982, he was promoted to marketing

director. Two years later, he published Thrifty Years, a

biography of Hendrick Meijer, the company-founder and

Hank’s grandfather. Hank has also written articles on Senator

Arthur Vandenberg, having been published in the Michigan

Historical Review and has written the entry on the Senator for

Simon & Schuster’s Encyclopedia of the US Congress. Hank is a

Trustee of the Ford Museum Foundation and Vice President of

the Grand Rapids Area Council for the Humanities.

Gordon Olson, Grand Rapids Historian Emeritus, came to

Grand Rapids in 1973 as Assistant Director of the Grand

Rapids Public Museum; becoming Grand Rapids’ official city

Historian in 1978. As Historian, he was chiefly responsible for

significant increases in the holdings of the Grand Rapids

Over the years, he has risen over $500,000 to support local

publishing and collecting ventures; most recently publishing a

book entitled, Flight to Freedom, about local Vietnamese

refugees. Today he is still the person most called upon to

provide information on Grand Rapids history.
