9th Annual San Diego Walk for Life
Stand up for Life at the 9th annual San Diego Walk for Life: a hybrid week-long event (January 11-16, 2021) which includes a series of
webinars, a virtual concert, two masses, and a vehicle caravan that will replace the actual walk. The theme is “Never Alone: Meeting their Needs at Every Turn.” Mass will be outdoors with a live-stream option. We encourage you to show your pro-life spirit by wearing blue for the webinars and Mass and by decorating your cars with life-affirming signs. Check the entire program at www.sdcatholic.org/event/san-diego-walk-for-life

Immersed in Faith When I was newly ordained priest, a nervous mother went to the rectory just a week before the scheduled Baptism of her baby. She had heard that
when we baptized babies, we immersed them in the water of the font. Not understanding what that meant, she was very concerned and requested that the priest simply pour a few drops of water on her child’s head. The catechist patiently explained to her that the priest will indeed celebrate the sacrament by im-mersing the child in the water. But then she de-scribed the difference between immersion and submersion. The child would not be going under the water and would not be held down in the font as the mother feared. The catechist then tried to explain how simply pouring a drop or two of water diminishes the marvelous symbolism of the sacra-ment. Placing the baby in the water reveals how powerful and dynamic a symbol it is. Later on, we assured the mother that her baby would be safe and secure. After the ceremony, the mother and the family thanked me for the beauty of what had just un-folded. They began to understand the meaning of some of the wonderful symbols of the sacrament. The Baptism of Jesus provides us with a para-digm. Both reassuring and challenging, it should frighten us, at least a little, hearing God’s voice and all. But it should also reassure us that God is with us. And God will do things God’s way and not ours. So we need to trust God. In God’s hands we are always safe and secure.

Now that Catholics are spending unprecedented amounts of time at home,
how can we continue to stay spiritually engaged and even
grow during this time?
Build a home altar or shrine. Setting aside a sacred space in your home encourages your family to pray. Candles, a crucifix, a Bible, holy water, and your favorite sacred images can be placed on a small table to uplift the soul to God. Participate in the Mass. Catholics can still participate in the Holy Mass via livestream and worship as if they are actually there. Pray a daily family Rosary. Set aside 20 to 30 minutes each day to gather around your home altar as a family and to pray the Most Holy Rosary for a swift end to the pandemic, for all those afflicted, for all healthcare workers, for the souls of the faithful departed, and any intentions you and your family may have.

A Special Gift for the New Year Please pick up a copy of “Do Something
Beautiful for God” by Mother Teresa. The book is a collection of short daily inspirations for the New Year based on Mother Teresa’s teachings, encouraging us to do small acts
with great love. Matthew Kelly’s books have been provided by one of our faithful
parishioners. Happy New Year!
The Baptism of the Lord com-memorates the final “Christmas” feast, when God reveals the divinity of Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan River. It is a good day to celebrate our own baptism, our “new birth” in Christ and inclu-sion in his body, the Church. Next Sunday we return to Ordi-nary Time. This year seven and a half weeks in Ordinary Time mark the time between the con-clusion of the Christmas season and the beginning of Lent. The first week in Ordinary Time be-gins immediately after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which is why there is no “First Sunday of Ordinary Time.”
Thank you for turning in your weekly envelopes! Many people have dropped them in the parish mailbox or have mailed them in. We appreciate your donations. May God bless you for your continuing support!

Fr. Rey
