Vessel: Hampton Lady, a restored 1958 cross-plank

mahogany charter fishing boat originally built on

chesapeake bay

Home port: Soleau’s marina, hampton bays

What boating does for him: “i left my corporate

job in new York city to do what i love, which is fishing

and boating. i’ll never be a millionaire, but i’m doing

something that i enjoy waking up to every morning.

i always wanted to be a fisherman. my parents first

took me fishing when i was two years old—and 33

years later, i’m finally doing it full-time. we fish all the

way through december—people don’t realize how long

the season is—and then start up again in February. it’s

an older boat, so it requires a lot of maintenance—

sanding, repainting. it’s like i’ve become a carpenter

without even realizing it, i do so much work on it!”

(photographed with their son,

braedon, and niece megan)

Vessel: First Wind, an alerion

express 28, a graceful day sailer

Home port: northwest harbor,

east hampton

What boating does for them:

Gail: “on still days, we’ll take our

speedboat out, but we’re die-

hard sailors—as soon as the wind

picks up, we’re out sailing. when

you get on the sailboat, you

forget everything. i can think of

no other sport like it—you really

leave the land behind you. we

sometimes take off with no

destination in mind.”

Joe: “i love the thrill of being

on the water, the peace and

quiet of not having an engine,

the tranquility. i love the

speed and sense of excitement

of having the boat heeled

over, dealing with the forces

of nature. the alerion is

described as ‘the prettiest girl

at the dance,’ and it really is a

beautiful boat.”

hulme, an architect

Vessel: Expedition, a 1957 50-foot

yacht custom-built on city island

Home port: east hampton point marina,

three mile harbor

What boating does for them:

Eileen: “all the cares and worries—you just

leave them on shore. we go on overnights to

nantucket and martha’s Vineyard and picnic off

gardiner’s island. i even have a little painting

studio on the boat.”

John: “when i first let go of the dock, i point

the bow out the channel at east hampton point.

i only go on calm days, and it’s mandatory that

you go slow, for about a mile and a half, before

you get out to the breakwaters. it’s just glorious:

calm, leisurely; it’s like a parade, everybody’s

going slow. on that first part of the trip, where

the beaches are closer, you can see the bottom,

see sea life, horseshoe crabs; it’s right there

that i like best. and when people see my boat,

they go nuts. it’s old, and they all shout, ‘hey!

how old’s that boat?’”

president at ubS, with J. d., an english bulldog

Vessel: Black Duck, a hinckley picnic boat, an

excursion craft that seats eight to 10 people

Home port: Sag harbor cove Yacht club

What boating does for them:

Greg: “the hinckley doesn’t draw much, only 18

inches of water, and some of the most beautiful

places around the hamptons are the estuaries

and other spots that are tough to get into with a

large boat; you can actually beach this boat and

hike, canoe or just have cocktails.”

Randy: “the boat feels old-timey to me; it’s not

so super-fancy big that you can’t enjoy it. and

it gets us out of our home, so we can really

take in how beautiful everything is on the water.

originally i thought, who has time for a boat—we

have a yard to take care of! but when you’re on

it you can really relax, and you take on new

perspective. on the boat, my mind clears; i think

it puts us more in the present.”

Vessel: a 2005 chris-craft Speedster, made of

teak and fiberglass to resemble a vintage motorboat

(“it doesn’t have a name,” says henkin.

“they say it’s bad luck, but it’s a personal choice.”)

Home port: hampton landing, Smith creek,

hampton bays

What boating does for him: “i lead a completely

different life during the week, but on the boat i totally

relax. anything that’s on my mind, no matter what,

it goes away. my boat’s made to be a race boat for a

lake, so it’s better in Shinnecock or peconic bay, but it

takes waves very nicely. i had a boston whaler before,

but i really wanted to trade up. a friend told me about

this boat, said that it was on the cover of a magazine,

looked like my house and looked like me, and that i’d

fall in love with it.”

Who: Jonathan russo, a new York city talent agent

Vessel: Sachem, a Sabre 38, which Sailing magazine described as

exuding “a sense of quality and timelessness” when the boat debuted

25 years ago; a very capable cruiser, it can also be raced

Home port: Shelter island Yacht club, dering harbor

What boating does for him: “i love this boat for its performance and

its beauty; it’s fast paced, and very well made. i’ve been sailing for 30

years, and the area between Shelter island and nantucket has some of

the most beautiful cruising grounds in the world, equal to the british

Virgin islands or croatia, with lots of harbors, beautiful water and

lovely towns and cities to visit.”

Vessel: Caroline Rose, a Sunfish;

introduced in 1952, the Sunfish is

listed in the american Sailboat hall

of Fame as “the most popular fiber-

glass boat ever designed”

Home port: barnes landing,

east hampton

What boating does for them:

Jennifer (not pictured):

“Sometimes colin takes caroline

in the boat all the way around

gardiner’s island. there’s an island

to the east, called cartwright

island, that’s just a sandbar really,

but in caroline’s mind, it’s very

romantic, so the two of them sail

around again and come back.”

Colin (pictured with daughter

Caroline Rose): “i try to go out

on the boat as much as possible,

although when you have two kids

you don’t do as much as you’d

like to. i just love to be on the

beach and on the water at barnes

landing. it’s incredible.”
