Please to let us know if your email has changed or if you are not receiving emails from our parish. We periodically send

out notices and announcements of upcoming events.

CHANGES IN COLLECTIONS: It has been a year since the Archdiocese and our Parish made the decision to reduce the number of collections at Mass. Unfortunately, with the elimination of our monthly maintenance collections, totals for the offertory have been down. At our recent finance council meeting it was suggested to re-institute the monthly maintenance. It was the hope that the reduction of the second collections and elimination of the monthly maintenance would have helped to increase the weekly offertory; which it has not. Please prayerfully consider your continued and if your means will allow additional support of our Parish in the weekly offertory. While on vacation, please consider setting up an account on our “Online Giving” program. This can be done by going to our website: ipswichcatholics.org and clicking the “online giving” icon.

PARISH WEBSITE: www.ipswichcatholics.org PARISH EMAIL: [email protected] 4

I have a few matters that I want to talk about! Both regarding changes! (don’t get your hopes up!)

I have been given an opportunity to visit Sponsored Friends through Unbound. (Unbound.org)

One trip is to Peru, the other is to Bolivia. These trips will cover most of the month of August.

Summer is a quiet time here in the Parish, so it is an ideal time to go. The problem is with Mass

coverage, particularly the Weekday Masses. It is almost impossible to find Weekday Mass coverage;

the shortage is that severe. So, the following will be done: There will be no Weekday, 9:00 AM Masses, August 3rd through August 14th. There will be

Weekday Masses on August 15 and 16. There will be no Weekday, 9:00 AM Masses, August 17th

through August 29th. For those who do go to Daily Mass, we invite you to attend Mass at St. Paul

in Hamilton, St. Mary in Rowley, Notre Dame Convent in Ipswich, Immaculate Conception in

Newburyport, St. Rose in Topsfield, Carmelite Chapel at North Shore Mall, etc. (please call them for

times). If a Funeral Mass comes in during this time, the Parish Office and Funeral Home will assist

in finding a Priest to celebrate it here. Remember! This is only for Weekday Masses! The Weekend (Sat 4PM, Sun 9AM and 11 AM) Masses

will be covered by visiting priests. Thank you for your understanding. Now for another “Change”, this time in regard to the Church building.

Like any old home or building, things wear out, need to be replaced or fixed. We have a few

outstanding problems in our Church building. First of all, the entire floor must be replaced. This is a

problem that has come with age. The present floor is cracking, coming apart in places. The floor

probably has asbestos within the tiles or adhesive. This will be a big project! Secondly, the doors of

the Church must be replaced. The present doors are almost beyond repair, not secure, some cannot

even be used due to the locking system. There are other possible needs and changes within the

building. We have begun to address many of these issues, for our Church building now, and for the

future! We have contacted and have begun to work with an Architect Partnership to address much

of this. This is only the beginning stages, but it must be done! The reality is that it is going to cost

us money! We will very probably have to have a major Capitol Campaign, take out a Loan, etc.

My personal thought about this is that the people in the 1960’s built the new Saint Joseph Church

for the future, so too should we “re-build, repair, renew” the Church for the future! Thank you for your time in reading and considering all the above! Enjoy the rest of your Summer!

A Retreat for Deacons’ Wives

Growing in the Fruits of the Spirit Presenter’s: Fr. Flavio Gillio & Dottie Levesque

Most dioceses have retreats for their Deacons, but how about for the wives of deacons?...Theirs is a ministry of its own, for as a couple they serve the Church together. Walking through the Fruits of the Spirit enumerated by St. Paul in Galatians 5:22-23, we will examine what each fruit means through a close reading of selected biblical texts. How does Western culture inhibit the development of these fruits? If nurturing godliness, growing in inner beauty, and letting Jesus live through you are relevant goals in your life and faith journey, this retreat is for you! Retreat starts on Friday, September 13th at 7:00pm (Registration begins at 6:30) Retreat ends on Sunday after Lunch Suggested Donation: $225 per person

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME OUR LADY OF HOPE, 1 PINESWAMP RD. IPSWICH JULY 28, 2019

PARISH WEBSITE: www.ipswichcatholics.org PARISH EMAIL: [email protected] 7

By Dr. Scott Hahn Asked and Answered Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) Genesis 18:20-32 Psalm 138:1-3, 6-8 Colossians 2:12-14 Luke 11:1-13 Though we be "but dust and ashes," we can presume to draw near and speak boldly to our Lord, as Abraham dares in this week’s First Reading. But even Abraham - the friend of God (see Isaiah 41:8), our father in the faith (see Romans 4:12) - did not know the intimacy that we know as children of Abraham, heirs of the blessings promised to his descendants (see Galatians 3:7,29).

The mystery of prayer, as Jesus reveals to His disciples in this week’s Gospel, is the living relationship of beloved sons and daughters with their heavenly Father. Our prayer is pure gift, made possible by the "good gift" of the Father - the Holy Spirit of His Son. It is the fruit of the New Covenant by which we are made children of God in Christ Jesus (see Galatians 4:6-7; Romans 8:15-16).

Through the Spirit given to us in Baptism, we can cry to Him as our Father - knowing that when we call He will answer. Jesus teaches His disciples to persist in their prayer, as Abraham persisted in begging God's mercy for the innocent of Sodom and Gomorrah. For the sake of the one just Man, Jesus, God spared the city of man from destruction (see Jeremiah 5:1; Isaiah 53), "obliterating the bond against us," as Paul says in this week’s Epistle.

On the Cross, Jesus bore the guilt of us all, canceled the debt we owed to God, the death we deserved to die for our transgressions. We pray as ones who have been spared, visited in our affliction, saved from our enemies. We pray always a prayer of thanksgiving, which is the literal meaning of Eucharist. We have realized the promise of this week’s Psalm: We worship in His holy temple, in the presence of angels, hallowing His name. In confidence we ask, knowing that we will receive, that He will bring to completion what He has done for us - raising us from the dead, bringing us to everlasting life along with Him.
