AFRAA 44th Annual General Assembly and Conference2

Sanibonani! (Greetings)

Johannesburg is world renowned for being one of the most vibrant, pulsating and inspiring cities on the African continent. The African Airlines Association (AFRAA) is an esteemed African airlines authority set to revitalise and positively transform the aviation industry on the continent. It is thus

fitting that the 44th Annual General Assembly (AGA) of AFRAA is held in Johannesburg, Africa’s very own city of lights.

On behalf of AFRAA and the host of this year’s conference, South African Airways (SAA), I extend a warm welcome to each and every delegate and speaker participating in the AGA. This 44th gathering of African industry leaders comes at a time when the airline industry in Africa is experiencing growth, albeit plagued with its own unique challenges. This year’s Assembly is the most appropriate forum to discuss the way forward for African airlines and seek renewed partnerships with industry suppliers and other stakeholders. The anticipated mix of high profile delegates – drawn from airlines, airports, civil aviation bodies, aircraft and engine manufacturers, IT and other service providers, as well as the global media, creates an ideal environment for knowledge exchange, sharing of best practices and conclusion of partnership deals. It has been seven years since the last AFRAA AGA was held in South Africa. During that Assembly, the resolutions adopted were largely aimed at addressing the safety challenges confronting the airline industry in Africa. While much has been done to improve our operating environment, there is still a long road ahead. This conference will re-examine the progress made and address some of the challenges, tailoring a unified way forward in which all stakeholders can work together to enhance our industry.Let me assure each AFRAA delegate that this will be an inspiring AGA located at the Sandton Convention Center, in Sandton, one of Johannesburg’s most prestigious business hubs ... and shopping mecca! In addition to this being a diverse melting pot of cultures, you will have an opportunity to explore a taste of the city through an exciting leisure programme courtesy of SAA.On behalf of Team South Africa and SAA in particular, I am delighted to welcome you all to Johannesburg. I wish you a successful AGA and I hope that you enjoy your stay and return home with memories that warm your heart.Always,

Mr Vuyisile Kona, 2012 President of AFRAA & Ag. Chief Executive of South African Airways
