LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER
Derian T. BaugFounder & CE
Men’s Style La
When I was a young boy, I didn’t
have a clue what style was. It wasn’t
for lack of effort—I just didn’t know
what I was doing. To be entirelyhonest, I was kind of a dork.
My sister, who was a year younger
and quite popular even amongst
my friends, tried to help me. I think
it was beginning to embarrass her
that her older brother hadn’t figured
out how to dress himself yet.
I was still trying to figure it outin college, but I had made some
progress. I was learning everything I
could about men’s style: The proper
way clothes should fit. How to
match colors and patterns. And all
sorts of ‘rules’ for what to wear on
different occasions.
It wasn’t long before I was gettingattention and gaining confidence. I
was actually building a reputation
for being well-dressed. Fast forward
a few years, and I was the one guy
out of my friends who actually
enjoyed shopping and had become a
sort of expert on style.
My friends, like many of you reading
this, hated shopping. They wouldask me to help them out any time
they had an interview, a date, a
presentation, or any other special
occasion. We’d make a guys’ night o
it. Grab a beer, eat some wings, and
stop through the mall somewherein-between. Because after all, we
were men. We didn’t shop. We did
“manly” things.
And then one day, it dawned on me.
Although my friends (a bunch of
everyday guys) hated shopping, they
also really enjoyed looking good.
They wanted confidence in their
appearances. They wanted to makelasting impressions. They wanted to
look like they cared about the thing
they were showing up for.
And that is why I started Men’s
Style Lab with one simple goal—to
provide effortless style for everyday
guys. What you’re seeing is the
culmination of this mission. In yourhands is the very first issue of our
Men’s Style Lab quarterly Style
Guide. These are the very insights I
wish I had access to many
years ago.
I hope you enjoy this and the many
issues to come. May you have a safe
and stylish holiday season.
All the best,

ooking to upgrade his transitional wardrobe,
Josh asked his Personal Style Advisor for a
smart casual update. Wanting to look a bit
more grown up when hitting the town with
friends, Josh asked for a few button-down shirts.
He also mentioned wanting to branch out of his
baggy jean collection, implying that it was time to
retire his well-loved college clothing. These items
will not only work for his night and weekend lifestyle,
but easily adapt to his office dress code.L

Fold–DON’T HANG–yoursweaters, as the latter can
compromise the shape.
You could also roll
them. This willeliminate any creases
folding may cause.
Dry-cleaning takes more
time and money than
other care options. But it
is one of the best ways toensure your sweaters stay
in good condition. Only
dry-clean when you must,
not too regularly that the
process begins to strip and
weaken the wool fibers.
This unnecessarily ages the
garment. Cotton pieces can
be dry cleaned, but it isn’t
as necessary as with woolor wool blends. Machine-
washing wool will likely
damage the fabric and
could ruin your sweater.
Any stubborn stains should
be taken to a dry-cleaner.
Fold them in a drawer oron a closet shelf.

Q: What style of shirts should
I be looking for that go well
under sweaters, blazers,
etc., but also look good on
their own? I want to avoid
“homecoming-style” shirts
that high schoolers get and
just slap a tie over. - Ryan
A: Let’s talk about the art of
layering. The first layer should bethe lightest and thinnest layer, as
it will be closest to the body. For
button-ups, try a more tailored
silhouette to reduce the ‘balloon’
effect around your waist. The
second layer will bring you warmth
and style. Stick to a sweater or
vest in a color that complements
your button-down. To polish your
look, add a blazer, varsity leather jacket, or bomber jacket.
Each layer should be something
you could visibly wear on its own.
If you are looking to bring color
into your look, stick with one or
two vibrant shades that work well
together. Only use one patterned
or textured piece to keep anylook cohesive.
For those who always seem to
be near breaking a sweat, wear
one fewer layer. Layering can be
a matter of trial and error. Play
around with the look and find what
works best for you!
Q: How do I style the trendy
sweatpants/jogger pant look?
Can it be worn to go out on a
Friday night? J.Crew always
makes it look easy! - Landon
A: If you are going to try thislook, embrace a lean and tapered
cut around the ankle to show off
your favorite pair of shoes. On the
weekends, pair the pants with a
solid henley underneath a wool
sweater and a beanie. While this
look may not work for a more
business-formal environment,
play around with colors. An army-
green chino pant that offers a
cinched cuff at the ankle is easily
dressed up. Layer a button-down
shirt under a solid sweater and
top off with a tweed blazer. Finishyour look with a pair of wool socks
and desert boots. For the brave,
embrace a textured jogger pant
(maybe even a leather pant–
very rock ‘n’ roll), paired with a
knit sweater and more
casual sneakers.
Q: What’s your take on brown
shoes/belt with a grey suit or
pants? I’ve heard it’s okay for
modern style, but I’ve also
heard it’s best to just stick
with black. - Max
A: Medium-and light-grey suitscan be worn with both black and
brown shoes. Medium-grey suits
are less formal but offer flexibility
You can easily pair them with just
about any color of leather (try a
burgundy-tinted shade of brown)
and coordinating accessories
(try adding a hint of color with
a pocket square or a patterned
button-down). Darker charcoal
suits or pants are best paired wit
black accessories.

The holidays are not the time for fashion crimes. Not
that any season is a good one to dress poorly, but family
gatherings and dinner parties are places you want to feel
especially comfortable and confident. If you’re making
any of these style errors, correct them before you’re in
full holiday celebration swing:
Mixing too many patterns:
Mixing patterns has become an acceptable practice in the
world of good style. But the main requirement for pulling
the mix-and-match off is subtlety. Remember that holiday
and winter clothing have the tendency to use thicker
fabrics, bolder colors, and multiple layers. Swap this bad
combination out for one with only one main patterned
piece. This keeps you from looking like the present you had
to use two different wrapping papers on.
Cliché pieces:
Unless you’re a kindergarten teacher or a clown who
only accepts Christmas gigs, you shouldn’t be wearing a
reindeer tie. Avoid holiday style mistakes that someone
is bound to capture on camera. Choose classic pieces
that have a great fit over cliché items that definitely
won’t impress.
Too many (or too few) layers:
In the dead of winter, we often mistakenly dress for the
frightful outside weather. Keep in mind that, while the wind
and snow might be blowing outside, your clothing should
be conducive to an indoor event. Choose flexible layers.
Your jacket or coat should be thick and sturdy, but choose a
comfortable shirt and sweater combination beneath it. If the
location has the thermostat turned up, you can always shed
the sweater while still looking put-together.
Incorrectly gauging event dress code:
It might be a bit extreme to call a family dinner one with
a ‘dress code,’ but hear us out. Avoid being the only
person in a black tie outfit at a casual-cozy celebration by
planning ahead. How might other invitees be dressing?
What will you be doing? If the answers to these involve the
keywords ‘laid-back,’ ‘relaxing,’ or don’t involve people you
really need to impress, there’s no need for a suit or tie.

Holidays are a time to focus on loved ones, but that
doesn’t mean your style has to suffer. Nix clichés or
using too many patterns. Dress for what you’ll be
doing at the event, using layers to stay flexible for
the venue temperature. Avoid these holiday fashion
crimes like your slice of pumpkin pie depends on it,
and you’ll be on Santa’s nice list for the remainder o
the season.

Brand Spotlight: Grayers
1. Grayers is only a few seasons old. What
inspired you to start the collection?
There was a gap in the marketplace, and
I was determined to fill it. I felt there was
a vital group of guys out there who are
underserved—guys who appreciate smart
design that is approachable and well-valued
with stellar quality.
This casual menswear designer holds fit and quality to the highest of standards. Peter Georgiou,Grayers co-founder, let us in on this season’s secrets and how the brand was born.
2. Can you tell us a few things about the
designers’ backgrounds?
Ten years at Ralph Lauren gave me a window into blue
chip design, product development, and branding. Late
I made clothes and designed for top brands known for
their quality and integrity.

All of this, in addition to being a student of political
science and a history buff, has played into Grayers.
Our vintage photography, clothing, history, and travel
memorabilia collections go back 20 years.
Even the name Grayers is rooted in historical
reference. Much of men’s sportswear today is
influenced by the past: denim from Americanworkwear, chinos from military style, and iconic gray
flannel trousers commonly known as Grayers, which
were prevalent in academic life in Britain in the 1950s.
3. What are a few of your favorite items from this
fall/winter?
We spend a lot of time thinking about what guys want
and need. We like a good backstory and for our clothesto have one, too. I love our shirts because they are
classic but inspired by vintage patterns. We modernize
them in new colors and fabrics. And our boiled wool
blazer is a favorite for cold-weather dressing.
4. What distinguishes Grayers?
We are rewriting the classics and making themuniquely Grayers. We comb through everything from
European antique shops to great vintage clothing
archives, turning unique fabric finds into smart, classic
clothing for the modern guy—all at a price point he
can afford.
5. What kind of guy is Grayers intended for?
He’s the modern everyday guy, the wealthy guywho’s tighter than two coats of paint, and the young
professional guy who cares about what he spends.
