As The Kansas City Symphony Alliance celebrates its 50th year, we welcome
you to the 42nd Symphony Designers’ Showhouse. This project, started in
1969, is the longest-running annual fundraising Showhouse in the country.
This grand Sunset Hill home has something to celebrate this year, too. One
hundred years ago, in 1911, groundbreaking began on this Westover landmark
home. It was built for Dr. and Mrs. D. Walton Hall and was the family’s home for
nearly 40 years. From the time you enter through the beautiful front door, with its
intricate leaded glass trim, until you leave the house, you get a sense of Old World
charm and attention to architectural detail. Take a peek out of the 100-year-old
windows on the third floor, perhaps imagining yourself living in this elegant
house. Stroll through the rose garden on the east lawn and let your senses soar. We
hope that you enjoy your visit with us today.
Our auxiliary, formed in 1961 as the Junior Women’s Philharmonic Association
(JWPA), has adapted to many changes along the way. The Kansas City
Philharmonic closed its doors in 1982. Soon the orchestra was reorganized as the
Kansas City Symphony. This necessitated a name change for us, so we became the
Junior Women’s Symphony Alliance (JWSA). In 2008, it was time to update again,
so we opened our membership to men and women of all ages and emerged as the
Kansas City Symphony Alliance (KCSA).
This year marks another significant milestone for KCSA, as we expanded our
ranks to welcome members of Friends of the Symphony (FoS) into the group.
Since its inception, the Alliance has supported the Symphony by contributing
more than $6.5 million. Your attendance at the Showhouse helps us meet our
commitment to the Kansas City Symphony, an asset to the cultural life of Kansas
City and the region. We thank you for coming and hope that you will come again
next year.
We thank the current homeowners, Mr. and Mrs. Anil Jagtiani, for entrusting us
with their beautiful home. They have graciously assisted us in so many ways to
help transform the house into the stunning Showhouse you see today. The
Jagtianis, with their 15-year-old son, Kiran, have relocated to Philadelphia, Pa. We
hope they can arrange a visit back to Kansas City while the Showhouse is open.
Next, I would like to recognize our designers and landscapers. Where would we
be without these talented people, who always manage to create the impossible?
Their imaginative ideas and professional skills always amaze us, as somehow
everything comes together as planned. Designers, you did an outstanding job!
And last, but certainly not least, I would like to acknowledge members of
KCSA, fellow Symphony auxiliary members, community volunteers, Kansas City
Symphony staff and the patient Westover neighbors (who put up with our cars and
trucks for months). Thank you all.
Susann Shinkle, KCSA President

Featuring a tiled roof, large pillared veranda and many porches, Root &
Siemens Architectural Firm designed this English-style home with Gothic
influences. It was built for Dr. D. Walton Hall in 1911-12. A prominent ear,
nose and throat specialist in Kansas City, he was the grandson of Dr. John
Sappington of Arrow Rock, Mo., whose use of quinine pills for malaria fever
made him famous. Dr. Hall’s wife, Mary Katherine Motter of St. Joseph,
became a charter member of the Junior League in Kansas City.

The Halls moved into the house in
January 1912, and their son, Joshua, was
born in May. As a teenager, he moved his
bedroom to the third floor on the east side.
His sister, Katherine (Kitty) Wagstaff, also
grew up in the house. (Many of the female
descendants of the Hall family bear the
name Mary, Katherine, or a combination, in
honor of Mary Katherine (Motter) Hall.)
Back in the day, the master bedroom was
on the second floor and featured a fireplace.
A back bedroom is where Mrs. Hall spent
her last days on a chaise lounge with a pink
satin quilt, which is still in the family and
lovingly cared for by her granddaughter
Mary Kay Horner. She and her husband,
Charles Horner, donated the George Caleb
Bingham portraits of her ancestors Dr. John
Sappington and his wife to The Nelson-
Atkins Museum of Art.
Youngest granddaughter, Ruth Ann
Hinsdale, inherited the tall case clock that
sat at the foot of the stairs. Another
granddaughter, Betsy Stopperan, recalls
sitting on her grandfather’s lap in a big
Victorian chair in the library, Easter egg
hunts and roller-skating on the front porch.
The girls recall their grandmother’s love of
Oriental rugs and overstuffed furniture as
well as the sun porch (then sleeping rooms
for the hot Kansas City summers) with its
white wicker furniture where they played
cards and games.

renovation that took the walls down to
the studs, the workmen found layers of
wallpaper, revealing the period decor —
one striking pattern was orange and green
polka dots. They even uncovered an old
Batman poster.

After Dr. Hall passed away, the Raymond
Glasnapp family bought the house from his
estate in 1950. Raymond and his wife, Erma,
operated a private investigative service
named for Lear B. Reid, former police chief
and FBI agent. Glasnapp remembers the
coal furnace, the chute and the brick-lined
coal room in the basement, which is
remarkably clean even today. He also
remembers the old “woody” station wagon
parked in front of the house. On a recent
visit, he noticed that a doorway was closed
off on the second floor on the north side,
which used to link a small porch off a
bedroom (minus the large closet it has today).
Around 1955, the house was sold to Keith
and Arlene Chasteen, who lived there with a
son and three daughters until 1959 before
being sold to Mrs. Adele McCarron, the
widow of George McCarron, followed by
Nick C. Spanos in 1961-62.
From 1963-1992, Marion and Phyllis
Trozzolo enjoyed the home with their seven
children. Marion is probably best known for
the “Happy Pan,” a Teflon-coated frying pan
he unveiled in 1961. Although such pans had
been selling in France since 1954, he was the
first American to manufacture and market
them in the U.S. One of the originals is in
the Smithsonian. He also donated a Teflon

coating for the fence around the Harry S
Truman home in Independence.
His second claim to fame was the
development of the “River Quay,” now
known as the River Market north of
downtown Kansas City. As early as 1958, he
discovered the charm of the old buildings,
and over the years, acquired more than 30
of them.
The Trozzolo family added a full-size
Jacuzzi pool to the property for their
children. One day Mr. Trozzolo came home
with six gallons of paint and gave each child,
except the baby, a brush and instructions to
go paint the pool. Somehow, when it all
came together, it resembled a Piet Mondrian

painting, which was a favorite artist of
Phyllis Trozzolo, a 1955 graduate of the
Kansas City Art Institute. However, the pool
was removed around 1990 and replaced by
the rose garden. Phyllis had a beautiful
garden in the backyard, and Marion
planted nearly every tree except the pines
in the back.
Andrea Trozzolo James was married at
the home in 1979. (The picture above shows
her coming down the staircase where her
father is waiting.) She is now a teacher at
Lincoln College Preparatory School and
took 16 of her students to view the
undecorated house to sketch some rooms for
an interior design project. They will return to
see the finished project.

Jon Trozzolo remembers that his parents
were hosts for “traveling Mass” for
Catholics who marched to a different

For awhile, he had his own private roller rink

Order of Tour

48 ● 2011 SYMPHONY DESIGNERS’ SHOWHOUSE
Welcome to the 42nd Symphony Designers’ Showhouse! We are
thrilled to have you experience the wonders of the many
talents within these walls. As many of you may know, this beautiful
home was our 23rd Showhouse in 1992, and we are thrilled to revisit
its grandeur. The hardwood floors, spacious rooms, charm, grace and
natural light exhibit some of the warmth that you will feel as you
tour the Showhouse.
From the moment you enter, you’ll escape from the ordinary into
the ultimate dreams of our designers, who have all come together to
enhance the beauty of the 9-foot ceilings, well-proportioned rooms
and understated elegance and grace of today’s most-wanted features.
It has been my pleasure to guide and oversee the designers,
workers, landscapers, painters and others as they came together to
create this masterpiece. They have taken chances, tried new products
and mixed things up in ways that produced terrific results for a place
that feels “like home.” It has been my privilege to share with our
members, friends and you, our patrons, the amazing work that has
gone into the success of this Showhouse. I congratulate the designers
on a job well done and am proud to say that the Showhouse has been
represented by some of the finest designers in the Kansas City area.
I feel fortunate and thankful for each and every one of you for
your devotion to our project and our mission, which “promotes an
interest in symphonic music throughout the Greater Kansas City area,
and in particular, the welfare of the Kansas City Symphony, the
Kansas City Symphony’s programming, young peoples’ concerts and
youth activities through volunteerism, educational projects, social
activities and fundraising projects.”
I hereby devote this program book to the designers, supporters,
advertisers, trade workers, members and friends who have given their
time and products to the success of the 42nd Symphony Designers’
Showhouse! Thank you!

The design of the Royal Pine
Coral rug is based on European

design, finish, detail and Stickley’s
legendary quality. Details include a

serpentine cupboard doors. Both
drawers and doors have intricate
double maple inlay with solid brass
hardware. Each leg features an
inlaid maple bell flower at the top
and a tulip wood, ebony and
maple banding on the bottom. The

Chinese fretwork that replaces the
quarter-round pilasters in the
canted corners. Note how the shape
of both the top and bottom conform
to the graceful lines of the façade.

An unusual combination of textured, casual fabrics and sophisticated glitzy
textiles create unexpected elements. A happy coral provides the background
for the larger neutral upholstered pieces in traditional shapes. Pillows made from
an antique rug pattern and striped fabrics add a punch of color in addition to
original contemporary paintings. The room is divided into three areas. A pair of
sofas surrounds the fireplace, separated by a cocktail ottoman in a tigress gros
point cut velvet fabric. A baby grand piano has center stage in the room, balanced
by a transitional chest and custom French chair with alligator textured leather seat
and contemporary floral fabric back. The far end of the room has a traditional pair
of dressmaker chairs separated by a custom metal and glass table.

The long, narrow proportions of the library are designed to offer multiple areas of
activity and relaxation. The artwork — a combination of bold and serene, with the
muted tones in the upholstery and leather — is calming against the richly stained case
goods. Stickley Arts and Crafts furniture suits this wonderful limestone house. Both
are just as beautiful and enduring today as they were when designed at the turn of the
20th century. Leopold Stickley would feel right at home sitting in his namesake chair
enjoying a glass of wine.

Between the warmth of the orange punches of color, the fabric textures on the
upholstered pieces and the drama of the sculptural light fixture hanging above the
Carrara marble table, this porch has been re-imagined. With items such as swings
rather than settees, moss walls rather than concrete, dramatic lighting instead of the
usual sconces, you’ll be rejuvenated to reinvent your own outdoor living space.

The powder room resembles an Old World/Tuscan look with crackle faux finish on the walls in warm
brown, cream and sienna colors. The floor looks like a cobblestone street with its 3-inch by 6-inch gold
and cream travertine tile designed and installed in a brick pattern. Oil-rubbed sconces bring to light the look
and feel of the room as the same wrought-iron finish is found on the mirror and additional bath accessories.
Finishing off this Italian countryside theme is a picture of an Italian hillside with colors of red, mustard
gold, olive and warm brown.

GRAND STAIRCASE
Design Area #6
By blending representational, abstract and even sculpture, one can create a unique
harmony that makes a space all its own. The lusciously textured birch tree canvas
adorning the staircase serves as a transitional work of art that functions in both traditional
and contemporary settings. The rich and expressive characteristics of the large abstract
piece balance the other pieces with a focus on formal artistic elements. The look and feel
of the space would not be complete without fabulous, handcrafted and custom-designed
framing. The artwork has a dynamic effect in combination with the fun, whimsical
sculpture. They create an enjoyable space for all types of art lovers.

56 ● 2011 SYMPHONY DESIGNERS’ SHOWHOUSE
As you turn the corner to the final landing of the grand staircase, you are greeted
by children’s portraits, each showing the innocence of youth, the love of family
and the playfulness of the season. The bold colors of the portraits are a great choice
to fill the blank canvas of the grand staircase hallway. The gentle natural light from
the window, combined with direct lighting, emphasizes the colors and beauty each
portrait portrays. An antique table placed in the hallway allows a place to highlight
some smaller portraits that continue to show the happiness of youth and pull in the
colors of the surrounding space.

This space has been designed to function for many uses. The small closet sports an updated storage system, while
additional room can be found in the armoire and chest. The table in the center of the room comes in handy when
getting dressed or can be transformed into a desk area for a cozy home office, surrounded by comfortable seating
for multiple guests. The cart next to the bath can be used as a coffee station, for evening cocktails, or for housing
makeup and accessories. The anchor to this room is an antique hand-knotted rug with a center medallion. The rather
formal pattern is less fussy because of the neutral color with the simple addition of an aqua blue, while a central
chandelier and lamps make for a bright or romantic setting depending on the use of this multifunctional room.

This bedroom is a perfect suite for anyone, be it a resident or guest. Taking it back to its roots, this room
is naturally dark at night, letting the sun awaken you in the morning. As a carry through from the
dressing room, the north wall is covered with drapes, the perfect solution for light and noise control and
privacy, and it acts as a backdrop for the simple rattan bed. Blue, high-quality bedding naturally induces
relaxation and sleep, topped off with essential nightstands and lamps. The original mirror is used for daily
or nightly quotes or affirmations, while the existing shelves display personal mementos, books, magazines
and baskets for extra storage. This cozy room has the simplicity and sophistication that will transcend time
and trends.

examples of French motifs, such as a lavishly upholstered carved

From the delicate sky blue to the
deepest, boldest cobalt, the

Wedgwood blue, and the trim is

The master bath, painted in a
soothing blue, was designed
with a “wow” factor in mind. It is
well appointed with high-end
materials, such as Carrara marble,
custom cherry cabinetry and
brushed nickel fixtures, giving it
a luxurious feel. The listello
tile accent of black and white
marble used on the shower wall is
the motivation for other design
elements in the room. The curving
vine pattern in the tile inspires the
curved lines found in the faucet
handles, tub apron, light fixture,
shower and window treatments,
and the vanity’s corbelled feet.
Sparkling classic nickel light
fixtures put the final touch of
elegance on this master bathroom.

Acontemporary base enhanced
by traditional elements is the
theme for this often-overlooked
area of a home’s design: the hallway.
A neutral backdrop sustains the
simplicity of this thoroughfare’s
practical function while allowing
a selection of fine art, depicting
classic images of landscapes and
still life, to engage and inspire
passers-by. A colorful window
treatment complements but doesn’t
distract the spectator’s attention
from the main art attraction. In
fact, the calming colors of the
treatment’s fabric will likely entice
the homeowners to pause at this
cozy niche to catch one last glimpse
of the lovely art before gathering
belongings from the hallway’s
sleek accent table and continuing
on their way.

As you enter this hideaway, you are embraced by a warm color palette inspired
by refinished honey oak floors; a dark, deeply carved chest; and a richly
lacquered Asian cabinet with a chandelier emulating rice paper. Analogous tones of
orange contrasting with surges of black velvet, tender gold green and cloudy-day
gray enhance the entire space, along with window treatments and a large area rug.
An Asian version of a lambrequin frames the east window with oval fretwork
mirroring that found in the paned glass on the south wall. An easel with canvas is in
close proximity to the window nook, with a window seat that’s cushioned in a plush
fabric with side bolsters. A writing area, centrally located in the space, provides
open access to a unique screen shelf that provides storage for a book collection.

The bright white walls of the bath area are softened by floating lotus blossoms, a warm luxurious robe, a well-lit sink area with wood-framed
vanity mirror and oversized towels. An area rug in the middle of the bath lies underfoot. The silky green shower curtain is a welcoming
touch of color in an isolated corner and contrasts pleasingly with the ruby dusk and warm almond-shaded tiles found throughout the space. The
deep claw-foot tub provides a respite for total relaxation and reflection with its aromatic waters from therapeutic spa scents and bathing oils.
The richly upholstered side bench allows for extra seating or a nice resting place for a good book and reading glasses.

This charming bedroom, under the eaves with its coved ceiling and hand-painted trellis, was original to the
homeowner, and they wanted it to stay that way. Working with Provencal blue and yellow and adding creamy
whites and a touch of green here and there created the perfect coloration. Pine furniture pieces, painted furniture
touches and country checks add to the whimsical look that never goes out of style. A bit of history is found in the
linens, purchased at a Paris flea market. The white hand-crafted “boutis” quilt was carried all the way back from
Avignon. A matching piece was seen in Veranda magazine in 2007 in a home owned by fashion designer Adrienne
Vittadini. The fireplace mantel is also French and complements the perfect window seat.

Not just a bedroom but the nanny’s private getaway, this room is modernized and influenced by Dorothy Draper.
The deep eggplant wall color helps make this nanny feel like royalty. A pattern painted on the arched ceiling
above the reading nook not only defines the space but also showcases the interesting ceiling shape that’s very similar
to the interior of an aircraft, which is how it was intended to be used by Dorothy Draper, brushed in a warm bronzed
pearlescent color. The large-scaled geometric and floral patterns keep true to the Dorothy Draper design concept,
while the overall look is much cleaner and simpler. A separate dining area features a custom tablecloth made in
a one-of-a-kind floral print fabric and trim with custom fabric window treatments. This space also has a storage
shelving unit and Desiron console that can be used as a desk, vanity or media center.

FORMAL DINING ROOM
Design Area #29
Inspired by springtime in Paris, the formal dining room features case goods that include a 19th-century
European reproduction table flanked by updated wingbacks. The chairs are covered in a linen fabric
stamped in French writer John-Paul Sartre’s quote that translates, “Even the most trivial event becomes an
adventure when someone starts telling its story.” The six guest chairs are stylish splash backs in a white-
washed finish. Other eye-catching pieces include a standing beveled mirror, a bombe chest, and a
serpentine, hand-carved console with cabriole legs and veneered lattice. Garden statuary in an aged stone
finish accessorizes the room; it’s grounded by a richly textured, silvery sisal area rug. Framed Paris grid
maps decorate the walls, while a bejeweled crystal chandelier etched in silver hangs from the metallic
ceiling. Sumptuous silk cream draperies complete the design, blending vintage French with modern attitude.

The tall, oriental lattice-work screens create a dramatic background, while the comfortable slipcovered upholstery
is a nod to the garden-room feel of the windowed space. Here, a stone-and-glass center table affords this room
multiple uses, from an office to cocktail lounge or even a casual dining space. A washed, antique reproduction
Oushak rug covers the floor and establishes a subdued yet colorful palette. Accents of orange and teal are found in
the pillows, accessories and art. The small amount of wall space near the ceiling has been painted blue to mimic the
sky, while an antique Asian cabinet is used as a bar and storage. Lighting is found in an overhead fixture and lamps
around the room and can be adjusted according to how the room is used. Overall, it’s an elegant space for the entire
family, with classic style and a cozy, comfortable vibe.

Kleweno designers created a bold
environment by blending custom-
designed local art with the latest
appliances and luxurious accents. The
kitchen, originally designed by Kleweno
13 years ago, is significantly updated to
focus on entertaining while maintaining
a highly functional living space. Lending
to the Asian-influenced aesthetic is
the custom-carved backsplash tile, the
polished black granite countertops,
bronze-mirrored window enclosures, and
the custom black pot rack and light
fixture. A local artist’s paper and metal
wall sculpture complements the aesthetic
of the room. What was originally
designed as a desk area, an important
function of kitchens at the time of its
original design, has now been transformed
into a wine bar — a central gathering
point alongside the kitchen and enclosed
porch. Guests can gather around a
leather-upholstered countertop and have
easy access to a new wine chiller,
glassware and accessories.

FORMAL ROSE GARDEN

The beautiful, classic English garden was rejuvenated by the addition of fresh, healthy plants and garden
accessories featuring statuary and seating. The centerpiece fountain was brought back to life, boxwood hedging
and roses were carefully pruned, and the pea gravel walkway was top-dressed. Seasonal color, additional roses
and fresh wood mulch were added to complete the makeover. Concrete benches invite garden visitors to take a
moment to relax and enjoy the surroundings. A table and chairs allow family and friends to sit and visit, while unique
statuary in the northwest corner adds an additional focal point to an already visually stimulating garden.

Every year, the Symphony Showhouse is
a highlight in the season of the Kansas
City Symphony. It has evolved into more
than just a tradition. The creativity and
cooperation it represents is a wonderful
reflection of the similar support that the
Symphony is so fortunate to have among
its volunteers. We continue to benefit from
one of the most vibrant and devoted
collection of volunteers that is without
a doubt among the most successful and
effective of any orchestra in our country.
I hope that everyone will have a chance
to pass through the Showhouse and view
the fruits of the labor of so many talented
people. I congratulate everyone involved,
and I am personally honored and gratified to
be part of such an energetic and essential
organization as ours. Bravo to all!

So many of my favorite people I’ve met
in Kansas City are volunteers. I would
even say that many of our now dear friends
are Symphony volunteers, and that’s why it
gives me such joy to celebrate one of their
crowning achievements for the year, as they
have now for so many years, the Designers’

these wonderful people comes together for a
not-to-be-missed event that is fun for all of

Carnegie Hall in New York, Boston’s Symphony Hall,
Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Musikverein in Vienna and the
Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles __ each of these is
more than a magnificent building. These celebrated houses of music
elevate and distinguish their cities; however, for musicians and
music lovers, they are true destinations. To perform on their stages,
extending legacies of some of the greatest music-making from across
the centuries, or to hear a masterful performance as an audience
member is special beyond words.
It is the glorious acoustics of these great halls in which the magic
lives, for music is only alive when the written notes on the page are
given wing. From these stages, every note is enhanced by the clarity,

immediacy and beauty of the acoustics,
instantly inspiring musicians to a new level.
And for the listening audience, the nuance
and inflection, the power and passion, the
shouts and whispers of great music are all
revealed in a way no stereo system or
CD can ever replicate. And so it will be
with our new Kauffman Center for the
Performing Arts.
As we celebrate our inaugural season at
the Kauffman Center, we also celebrate
Kansas City and its identity as the “City of
Fountains.” We will present three world
premieres in our first season, all inspired by
the gorgeous fountains of our city. Just as
Respighi wrote his stunning Fountains of
Rome, we will present three new works
commissioned for our opening season by
three marvelous composers: Stephen Hartke,
Daniel Kellogg and Kansas City’s own Chen
Yi. This will be a season-long salute to our
home city and to these living works of art
that so inspire Kansas Citians of all ages.
Our new hall will change forever the way
we experience live music and performance
in Kansas City. The stunning architectural
statement of Moshe Safdie’s design has
become an iconic symbol amid our
landscape. But most of all, no one will want
to miss the opportunity to hear music as it
was meant to be heard, with all the clarity
and emotion that the great composers
intended __ in the words of Beethoven,
“May the music go from the heart to
the heart.”
