DR. HO: Will be talking about holds and restraints.
Billie Sell: TRAUMA TRIAD OF DEATH Hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy in trauma care
We all love a good pre-hospital trauma! Too often we see the trauma care part performed poorly. We will take an
in-depth, evidence-based look at the trauma triad of death and how we are affecting our patients in a negative
way with our treatment.
Objectives:
1. Be able to identify hypothermia in trauma patients
2. Understand how hypothermia negatively affects trauma patients
3. Basic understanding of how we affect acidosis in trauma patient
4. Basic understanding of coagulopathy in trauma
Billie Sell is a 15-year veteran in EMS with 13 as a practicing paramedic. Billie is a certified flight paramedic cur-
rently working for North Memorial Health-Air Care. She has been a field training officer for Air Care for over 5
years. Billie is also adjunct faculty for the paramedic program at South Central College in North
Mankato and director of ACLS and PALS classes for the college.
ROB PEARSON: CREW RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Dispatchers, Police Officers, Firefighters, EMS, and many other groups respond together each day. But are you
talking?
This session will explore the concept of Crew Resource Management. Together, as a team, we can get the best
from each group to improve our overall safety and effectiveness.
Objectives: EMS and Pre-Hospital Providers will
Understand the importance of Situational Awareness.
Learn effective Communications-Teamwork-Workload Management.
Identify updated response tactics to Mass Causality Events.
Rob Pearson is a Fire Service Instructor and EMS Educator. Rob is a

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND BIOS
DR. JODY JANATI: PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CONTROL DRAMA In this course you'll learn about common control dramas and how to negate them through step-by-step
applied approaches that really work. Dr. Jody Janati will help you identify and protect yourself from
common control dramas that arise when individuals become defensive. Once you are able to recognize the
behaviors that surface during defensive reactions, you will learn over 101 ways to constructively respond during
difficult interactions. The goal of this course is to help you set healthy boundaries with others and ultimately find
your "Conversation Peace."
What you will learn in this course:
-What is a Control Drama:
-How Do We Interact without Tension?
-How to Recognize Intimidator Behavior
-How to Recognize Poor Me Behavior
-How to Recognize Interrogator Behavior
-How to Recognize Aloof Behavior
-Assertive Communication Creates Balance for Any Control Drama
-What do Effective Assertion Models Look Like in Action?
-A Step-by-Step Guide to Three Successful Techniques
-How to Balance Your Conflict: 101 Things to Say & Do During Difficult Interactions
-Awareness and recognition of a control drama allows you to break the cycle and choose to disconnect from it
altogether. When a control drama isn't controlling an interaction, you can respond more effectively and
authentically to others. Knowing you have choices during difficult interactions with others, allows you to live a
drama-free life.
Dr. Jody Janati currently teaches in the Communication Studies Department at
the University of Minnesota. She has an Ed.D. degree in Organizational
Leadership and her primary interest area pertains to interpersonal conflict
resolution strategies. As an author and independent consultant, she offers a
variety of public and professional workshops on conflict reduction tactics and
effective interpersonal communication skills. There are a number of conflict
management workshops offered each year, yet rarely does the facilitator tell
participants exactly what should be said or done. This fact, along with her
graduate degree in Communication, is precisely why Dr. Janati considers the
step-by-step approach her primary focus.
