    PRODUCT INFORMATION

    Applications:Features:

    TGS 4160 - for the detection of Carbon Dioxide

    The gure below represents typical sensitivity characteristicsof TGS4160. The Y-axis is indicated as EMF which is denedas follows:

    EMF=EMF1 - EMF2where

    EMF1=EMF in 350 ppm CO 2 EMF2=EMF in listed gas concentration

    The gure below shows typical humidity dependency for anenergized sensor. Again, the Y-axis is indicated as EMFwhich is dened as follows:

    EMF=EMF1 - EMF2where

    EMF1=EMF in 350 ppm CO 2 EMF2=EMF in 1000ppm CO 2

    * Air quality control* CO 2 control in agricultural applications* CO 2 monitoring

    The TGS4160 is a hybrid sensor unit composed of a carbon dioxide sensitiveelement and a thermistor. A wide range of 350~50,000ppm of carbon dioxide canbe detected by TGS4160, making it ideal for usage in a variety of applications.

    The CO 2 sensitive element consists of a solid electrolyte formed between twoelectrodes, together with a printed heater (Pt) substrate. By monitoring thechange in electromotive force (EMF) generated between the two electrodes,

    it is possible to measure CO 2 gas concentration.Adsorbent (zeolite) is lled between the internal cover and the outer cover forthe purpose of reducing the inuence of interference gases.

    TGS4160 exhibits a linear relationship between EMF and CO 2 gas concentrationon a logarithmic scale. The sensor displays good long term stability and showsexcellent durability against the effects of high humidity.

    * High selectivity to CO 2* Low dependency on humidity* Long life

    Structure and Dimensions:

    Basic Measuring Circuit:

    REV: 01/06

    The TGS4160 sensor requires heatervoltage (V H) input. The heater voltage isapplied to the integrated heater in order

    to maintain the sensing element at aspecic temperature which is optimal forsensing. Electromotive force (EMF) ofthe sensor should be measured using ahigh impedance (> 100 G) operationalamplier with bias current < 1pA (e.g.Texas Instruments' model #TLC271).Since the solid electrolyte type sensor

    functions as a kind of battery, theEMF value itself would drift using thisbasic measuring circuit. However, thechange of EMF value (EMF) shows a

    stable relationship with the change ofCO 2 concentration. Therefore, in orderto obtain an accurate measurementof CO 2, a special microprocessor forsignal processing should be used withTGS4160. Figaro can provide a specialevaluation sensor module (AM-4) forTGS4160.
