April 8th, the first Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday. St Anthony’s will be hosting our 9th Annual Divine Mercy Sunday service

beginning at 2:00PM

In a private revelation Jesus told St. Faustina: “My daughter tell the whole world about my inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The

souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment”

The Church has also granted a plenary indulgence to those who observe Divine Mercy Sunday.

Confessions will be from 2:00 to 3:00. At 3:00 we will recite the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet, which will be fol-lowed by veneration of the Divine Mercy Image and a benediction

AN EASTER LETTER FROM FATHER BRIAN Dear Friends, Happy, happy Easter! 1700 years ago, St Augustine called this day the “Sunday of Sundays.” Indeed, every time we gather for Mas

son Sunday, we relive the resurrection of the Lord. By the time you read this let-ter, I will have celebrated Easter, half way around the world, where the event took place: Jerusalem. Be assured of my prayers for all of you from the empty tomb of our Risen Lord. I want to thank both Fathers Andrew and Erick for holding down the fort while I’m away. I can’t thank you enough. Please remember to keep Fr. Juan Manuel in your prayers, as well as his Mom, who has her own health issues. Goodbye for now. Looking forward to seeing you in early July. Again, happy, happy Easter! Father Brian

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes children acquire nicknames in childhood that stalk them through adulthood: “Pinky,” “Boo-boo,” and the like. This Sunday was once called “Low Sunday,” a step down from Easter glory, and an unfortunate nickname since Easter rejoicing goes on for fifty days. Traditionally this is the day when the newly baptized put away their white baptismal robes and returned to their everyday life after a week of intense celebration. Of course, the goal was to take up everyday duties with a very new point of view. A long title for the day was Dominica in albis deposito, or “The Lord’s Day for Putting Away the Albs,” so no wonder the nickname “Low Sunday” arose. In the old calendar it was also called “Quasimodo Sunday,” after the first word of the opening chant, Quasimodo geniti infantes, or “As newborn infants,” a reference to the newly baptized taken from the Epistle of Peter. Victor Hugo’s bell-ringing hero in The Hunchback of Notre Dame was abandoned as an infant on the threshold of the cathedral of Paris on Low Sunday, 1467, and named “Quasimodo” for the feast.

SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE It is not often that the author of one of the books of the Bible comes right out and tells us directly why he is writing what he is writing. In this Sun-day’s Gospel read-

ing, taken from the conclusion of John’s Gospel, the author tells us that he has chosen to record these events so “that you may come to believe that Je-sus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). The letter of John echoes this idea by saying that “everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God” (5:1)—what we might refer to as being “born again.” Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this Second Sunday of Easter shows us exactly what it looks like when believers are born again through faith.

NO THEORY Let your religion so be less of a theory and more of a love affair. --G. K. Chesterton

—G. K. Chesterton

Feliz Pascua! Padre Brian
