Team Taylor maintained their early lead to take first place at the Knights of Columbus Charity golf tournament last Saturday at SaddleBrooke Ranch West. The second place team, made up of Knights of Columbus Bob Zelinsky, father and son John and Joe Barno and Mike Rhodes finished with a 60, only two strokes behind team Taylor. Third place, with scores of 62, was shared by Ralph Medina, Ralph Flores,

David Garcia and Mark Vigil who matched Robert Bryant, Drew Kozakeuick, Sean Brannon and Mark Bankes. "We thank everyone who supported our fundraising efforts for our eleventh year," said tournament director John Wahlmeier. "We had Knights of Columbus from Globe, Catalina, Oro Valley, Ma-rana and Tucson play, along with teams from the Tri-Community to Raytheon,"

he added. Eighty year old Knight, Dan McHenry, of Council 12345 was awarded for be-ing the oldest player in the tournament. "Many, many businesses and golf courses were very generous with prizes, which have become a hallmark of our tournament," Wahl-meier said. "We simply couldn't have this top notch tournament without their support," he added.

Complied by Vicki Clark Ernest Brace was the lon-gest held civilian prisoner of war in the Vietnam con-flict. His sister Rose Brace Bradford of Kearny recently learned that his story will be told on a National Geo-graphic’s show Locked Up Abroad on April 17 at 9 p.m. EST, 6 p.m. Arizona time. Locked Up Abroad will use Ernie’s story for the premiere of its season stat-ing they found his story so compelling. The docudrama will open when Brace and now Arizona Senator John McCain first saw each other face to face at the White House dinner hosted by Richard Nixon for all the POWs. Ernie and John were next door neighbors in the Hanoi Hilton and commu-nicated by tap code but had

never seen each other in person. Ernie was a Vietnam POW for over seven years… this is how it all began. ---....During the Vietnam War, United States civilian pilot Ernest C. Brace was living in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with his wife and sons. His job was to fly air cargo to Lao Special Forces United, who were organizing the civic action teams for hos-pitals and supply bases, and in need of ammunition, first aid and food crates. May 21, 1965, began as an ordinary day with an ordi-nary mission. Brace was fly-ing provisions and passen-gers to Boum Lao – a small Korean village at the end of a valley – when his land-ing plane was riddled with gunfire by North Vietnam-ese soldiers hidden in the

jungle. Brace, along with a man named Chaicharn, was captured by unfriendlies and forced to march several miles into the mountains to camps concealed by the thick forest. Little did 33-year-old Ernest Brace know that he would become America’s longest held civilian pris-oner of war in Vietnam, enduring years of abuse, torture, sickness, isolation, hopelessness, and humili-ation by North Vietnamese soldiers. Brace was beaten with a cane, forced to stand in front of firing squad and violently interrogated by military of-ficers who believed he was with the CIA illegally cross-ing the Laos border. But he always held to the fact that he was an American civilian piloting supplies.

For the next three and a half years, Brace was most-ly confined to a small, four foot high damp bamboo cage, and his six-foot-tall frame had to crouch down to fit inside. During his years confined to the cage, he attempted to escape three times, once he even managed to get away for several days. As punish-ment for this he was buried in the ground up to his neck and left there for a week with only two 15-minute breaks a day and only rice for nourishment. He was eventually trans-ferred to the Hanoi Hilton where he made contact with McCain. The Brace family migrated from Michigan to Arizona in the late 1940’s but Ernie had already enlisted in the Marines and was in training

in South Carolina. He later attended flight training in Florida that would prepare him for the Korean War. He was shot down twice in that war and then returned to the U.S. to bby the thick forest. Little did 33-year-old Ernest Brace know that he would become America’s longest-held civilian prisoner of war in Vietnam, enduring years of abuse, torture, sickness, isolation, hopelessness, and humiliation by North Viet-namese soldiers. Brace was beaten with a cane, forced to stand in front of a firing squad, and violently inter-rogated by military officers who believed he was with the CIA illegally crossing the Laos border. But Brace always held to the fact that he was an American civilian piloting supplies. For the next three-and-a-half years,

Brace was mostly confined to a small, four-foot high, damp bamboo cage, and his six-foot-tall frame had to crouch down to fit inside. During his years confined to the cage, he attempted to escape three times – once, he even managed to get away for several days. As punishment for this, Brace was buried in the ground up to his neck and left there for a week. With only two 15-minute breaks a day and only rice for nourish-ment, Brace eventually lost the use of his leecome an instructor at Quantico where other military were being trained. It was later that he began flying commercial cargo flights. His family, Dad Cary, Mom Ruth and two sisters had moved to Ray by 1951 and eventually the parents

POW: Former Ray resident featured in By Lee JuilleratRegional EditorHerald and News Klamath Falls, Oregon Ernie Brace’s book, A Code to Keep, is powerful, riveting and intensely moving. When he speaks about his seven year, 10 months and seven days as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, it’s impossible not to be impressed by his resilience, and wonder how he survived the often brutal ordeal. But when he showed an unfinished version of a docudrama, Vietnam POWs:McCain and Brace, for friends at the Klamath YMCA, including several who’ve read the book and heard him talk, the visual impact was shocking. When it was over, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The film is part of the

National Geographic Channel’s Locked Up Abroad series that will open it ninth season at 9 p.m. (6 p.m. Arizona time) , Wednesday, April 17. A premier showing is set for April 9 in Washington, D.C., as part of POW Recognition Day. Brace, who has lived in Klamath Falls since 1989, terms the film a “good representative story” of his years spent mostly in solitary confinement in intentionally harsh conditions. The McCain in the title refers to John McCain, the senator from Arizona and unsuccessful 2008 presidential candidate. Although they never saw each other until 1973, the made contact by tapping in code and whispering through walls while being held in the Hanoi Hilton, the North Vietnamese’s

infamous prison. Brace and McCain narrated their stories in London last October. Brace said his storytelling was culled from nearly 20

hours of filming. Filming with actors was done last December and January in Thailand. The film begins with the two men, who had

National Geographic documentaryat the beach.” The film doesn’t hold back from the abuses both men suffered, especially Brace, He was tied, beaten, strapped inside a bamboo cage, taken to face a firing squad and, after a second escape attempt, buried in the ground for a week with only his head exposed, which left him partially paralyzed. It also recalls the time Brace, feeling mentally defeated, attempted to commit suicide but passed out while trying to strangle himself with a rope. He was later taken to Hanoi and, after initially fearing he was being tricked, responded to McCain’s tapping, first contact with another American in nearly three and a half years. Through their illegal communicating, Brace and McCain developed a

unique friendship, one that continues. McCain was later transferred to another prison and eventually spend five and a half years as a POW. AQs in the film, their first-ever face-to-face meeting was emotional. Brace said the transfer to Hanoi, especially after his failed suicide, gave him hope. “They’re keeping me alive for some reason because they’ve certainly had enough reasons to kill me and drop me,” he remembers thinking of leaving the jungle. Brace, like others, believe the 1973 release of American POWs and the stories they told about their treatment helped change public opinion of much maligned Vietnam veterans. “When the POWs came home and after listening to POW stories, the anti-war sentiment ended,” he said, expressing hope the docudrama “will make people more aware of what

never physically met each other, meeting at a 1973 White House reception for American POWs, which Brace remembers as highly emotional.

In his narration McCain tells, “We made it, Ernie. We did,” and in comparing their times as POWs says of Brace, “It makes my experience look like a day

the POWs went through in Vietnam. “This is,” Brace believes of McCain and Brace, “a story of overcoming the

odds, of perseverance.” Editor’s Note: The above story was reprinted with permission of the Herald and News.

Flying Tributes: Honoring World War II By John Hernandez Many young men from small towns in America joined the military and went off to fight during World War II. The Copper Corridor area was no exception. One young man, Raul C. Mendoza, a native of Hayden, Arizona was induct-ed into the Army Air Corps in 1943. Mendoza was recently rec-ognized by the Commemora-tive Air Force at the AirPower History Tour show at Phoe-nix-Mesa Gateway Airport. He received training in San Angelo, Texas as a bombar-dier in a B-29 and received his machine gunner training in a B-24 Liberator. He was honored as a participant and got to address the crowd at the air show sharing some of his memories as a bombar-dier. Mendoza still able to fit in the uniform he wore 70 years ago, posed for photos for people who stood in line to have their picture taken with him. He also got to ride in the bombardier seat of a B-29 bomber, which brought back memories of his days in the military. Flight Officer Mendoza told the story of an incident dur-ing a training mission. One

of the plane’s engines caught fire and was shooting past the waist gunner’s window towards the plane’s tail. The pilot who was also the captain of the crew put the plane into an emergency nose dive in an attempt to extinguish the flames. The pilot’s maneuver did not work. The captain then ordered the crew to prepare to

abandon the aircraft. Mendoza was ordered to the Bombay area of the plane to lead the evacuation. The crew, all wearing parachutes would have to jump out of the planes Bombay doors. As this was one of the crews’ first training missions, none of the crew had practiced parachute jump-ing. Realizing this, the captain instead chose to attempt to fly the plane back to their base. He was able to land the plane safely even though the en-gine was engulfed in flames. Emergency aid crews and fire trucks met them at the end of the runway. No one was injured. In 1945, Raul’s crew was grouped in Nebraska with other B-29 crews preparing to fly to the Marianas Islands in the Pacific. Once there, they would begin bombing runs on Japan. On Aug. 6, 1945, another B-29, the Enola Gay, dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiro-shima. Another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later, effectively ending the war and allowing many Americans to return safely to their homes. Mr. Mendoza paid special

tribute to his military com-rades and acquaintances from the Hayden and San Pedro neighborhoods. He said that about nine of the people he knew were either killed in combat or missing in action and never returned to Hayden from the battlefields. He named Fernando Raba-go, Guillermo Lopez, Kenny Schafer, Jesus Martinez, Junior Contreras, Norberto Martinez, S. Quesada, and K. Armenta as young men he knew that did not return. In 1946, Raul was honor-

Veteransably discharged and returned home to Hayden-San Pedro. He opened the Gila Furniture store in Hayden in 1948, which is still in business. The “Memphis Belle” was the name of a World War II B-17 bomber. The B-17 was also known as the “Flying Fortress” because of its fire power. It was armed with thir-teen 50-caliber M2 Browning machine guns and could carry a bomb load of 6,000 to 8,000 pounds. It was manned by a crew of ten. The Memphis Belle was named after Captain Robert K. Morgan’s girlfriend Mar-garet Polke who was from Memphis. Captain Morgan was the pilot. The Memphis Belle was the first B-17 to fly 25 successful bombing mis-sions over Europe and return with the entire crew alive. The general staff had set the completion of 25 missions as an incentive to boost morale. After completing 25 missions, the crew would be able to return home. Morale had been down due to 80 percent of the bombers being shot down during the first three months of the United States initiating bombing missions over Eu-rope. The average life span of a B-17 crew was 14 bombing missions. Nearly one-third of all B-17s built were lost during combat missions. After completing its 25 missions, the crew of the Memphis Belle returned to the United States and helped sell war bonds. They had flown from November 1942 until May 1943. They had survived anti-aircraft fire, attacks by German fighter planes, and five separate times had en-gines shot out but managed to return safely to their base. The Liberty Foundation was formed to preserve history and share the experience of flying in a B-17 for families to better understand what these heroes went through. the country. One of their museum pieces, “The Movie” Memphis Belle is a B-17, one of only 13 that are still flying. This B-17 was one of two planes used in the movie Memphis Belle

which was made in 1989. It is painted to look like the origi-nal Memphis Belle. The movie Memphis Belle had public flights on Mar. 16 and 17 at Tucson International Airport. For those who did not want to fly, the public was also allowed to walk through the plane and see where the airmen were stationed while on their missions. Although the media flight was cancelled due to mechan-ical problems, we were able to walk through the plane, talk with a couple of World War II airmen and learn about the history of the Memphis Belle. The veterans, Dick Carey and Mel Sinquefield, flew numer-ous bombing missions over Eastern Europe. The Memphis Belle is paint-ed like the original including the names of the original crew members and showing the stations they manned dur-ing the bombing missions. The picture of the girl on the

front of the plane was origi-nally done by a Corporal Tony Starcer, an artist stationed at the airfield in England. It was a copy of a “Petty Girl” paint-ing by famous artist George

Petty who did a series of pin up girls for Esquire magazine. The original crew also would have the names of their girl-friends or wives painted near their assigned positions on the plane. Upon entering the plane, I was surprised at the tightness of the quarters. The metal side panels of the plane were thin, there was no way they could stop the bullets from a German fighter plane. They provided very little protection. The flight crew had to wear jackets to protect them from the cold and oxygen masks when they flew at high alti-tudes. I can’t imagine what it was like being shot at while in flight or having an engine on fire or damage to the plane that limited the chances of your plane returning safely to base.

If you would like to help support the Liberty Founda-tion, visit their website at LibertyFoundation.org. May 19, 2013 will be the 70th anniversary of the Mem-phis Belle completing its 25th mission. It is a good day to take a moment to remember those young men that went off to war, many that never returned, and thank them for their service and sacrifice. Memorial Day is May 27.
