Lesson Plan

I would adapt the Whack a Mole lesson plan I found because it is interactive and can be used for nearly any subject or lesson.

It targets learners between grades K-5 My own lesson plan for Whack a Mole would be grade 1 mathematics.

How It Works

-Each mole circle is set up with a math question. -Students are directed to throw a squish ball at a mole circle and whatever one they hit is the question they have to answer. -This YouTube video shows an in depth look at the lesson plan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LcaFyoohX8 (Jaime Donally, 2010)

How I Would Change and Adapt The Lesson Plan

If I could change this game I would make it so they can use the pen and walk up to the board and click on the mole and see it getting whacked.

If I were creating the lesson plan I think the Whack a Mole SMARTboard game would best be served as a review strategy before a test or quiz.

I would include similar questions but also make slides that explain how that answer came about, rather than just showing correct vs. incorrect.

I also would like to make this game interactive to more than one student at a time. I could link the SMARTboard lesson to their iPad so they all can be a part of figuring it out or they could work in teams.

I would also like to include categories within the Whack a Mole game. Maybe different colored mole circles represent different level of difficulty or different subjects.

Other Lesson Plans

On a teachers blog site I found a similar game called “Whack a Word”. This game was not presented on a SMARTboard but could easily be transferred using

the previous Whack a Mole setup I showed. On the blog the teacher explained that the kids would get to hit the mole of their

choice uncover a word. Once they get the word uncovered they receive questions such as “Can you point out

the vowel?” or “How many syllabus does this word have?” If they get the question right they can Whack again.

Whack a Word

• Example of what it looks like without the SMARTboard.

• I would adapt this lesson to a SMARTboard using the same tactics and lesson plan.
