THE PROPERTY AND GROUNDSPrivate tennis courts are rare in Marin and particularly in Kentfield. This tennis court is sited with a view of Mount Tamalpais and the Bay and is designed for enjoyment. It was even designed with additional parking for the convenience of the players. The grounds were designed masterfully by the well known landscape architect, Michael Yandle. His use of stonework is part of his signature work, as are the grand scale lawns and well planned gardens. When you enter through the gates of this estate, you are treated to a beautiful view of the vineyards of Syrah grapes. The main residence has a unique wine cellar that holds approximately 500 bottles and features hand painted murals on the walls and ceilings. Always on the horizon are the stunning water views of the San Francisco Bay, Mount Tamalpais, the valley and the Marin hillsides. Magical is the best way to describe these grounds.

MAIN RESIDENCEThe gorgeous living room has expansive views of the lawns and gardens. Soaring cathedral ceilings are highlighted with exposed mahogany beams and chandeliers imported from France. The floors are American Walnut throughout the main residence and guest house. Mount Tamalpais is perfectly framed by the large picture window. The impressive fireplace compliments the room. Oversized French doors lead to the patio, lawn and to the tennis court.

The chef’s kitchen was designed by renowned designer Sandra Bird. It is truly the heart and soul of this home. Features include a wood burning oven that is also a pizza oven, stainless steel 6-burner Viking range and double oven, double stainless steel GE Profile microwaves, two Miele dishwashers, and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The floors are mahogany, the countertops French limestone, the abundant cabinetry is painted wood with brass mesh faces, and the sinks are copper. Only the finest materials were used in this extraordinary kitchen. A handcrafted wood island makes creative cooking even more fun. There is a vegetable prep sink, a designated space used as a work station for organizing the day, and a custom designed bar with a wall of designer tile from Ann Sacks. Bar appliances include a wine cooler, ice maker and mini refrigerator. Next to the bar is extra cabinetry for making espresso, hot chocolate, popcorn and other treats. Adjacent to the kitchen is a butler’s pantry and laundry room with Electrolux washer and dryer and a large walk-in pantry. There is a cozy den right off the kitchen where you can curl up with a good book, watch the flat screen television, or just relax. It can also double as a playroom for children. The wine cellar is conveniently located at the base of the back staircase accessed from the kitchen.

MAIN RESIDENCEDining is made even better with the oversized French doors that open to the outdoor patio, shaded pergola, lawns, and to the swimming pool and guest house. The oversized French doors add to the ease of indoor/outdoor living. There is a gracious table outside the family room to accommodate outdoor dining, and the family room is a wonderful gathering place for family and friends. If you’re up for a game of croquet, you just have to grab your mallet and walk out onto the lawn.

Opposite the tennis court is the family “mud room” with plenty of custom cabinetry to hold tennis racquets and other sports equipment, shoes, coats, duffel bags, dog leashes, umbrellas and anything else that you see fit to store there.

The beautiful entry foyer and staircase is designed with balconies and sitting areas, mahogany handrails, and custom metal balustrades that illustrate the care given to design elements. Custom, oversized mahogany and glass French doors are used throughout this exceptional home.

MAIN RESIDENCE – BEDROOMSThere are six (6) bedrooms in the main residence. One is located on the main floor and enjoys its own bath, and four of the bedrooms are located upstairs including the master suite. The upstairs floor plan includes a “wing” consisting of two bedrooms, two baths and a separate den for television/study/relaxation. Another bedroom is en-suite and adjacent to the “wing”. On the entrance level there is an apartment-type bedroom with a separate exterior entrance, kitchen, living room, and bath. It can also be accessed from the interior of the home, so it is a wonderful au-pair unit/ in-law space, or haven for another family member.

In the center of the upstairs is a foyer sitting room/library that acts as another gathering space. It opens to the gracious patio that encourages lounging, and a balcony that runs the length of that side of the home that includes the master suite. The master suite is complete with its own sitting room with a cast stone fireplace, flat screen television, mahogany wall-to-wall custom bookshelves and cabinetry, and features a wall of mahogany and glass doors that open to enjoy the view balcony. From the master bedroom windows and balcony one enjoys exceptional views of the estate grounds including the guest house and swimming pool, Mount Tamalpais, the San Francisco Bay, the valley and hillsides. To add to the feeling of a master bedroom “oasis”, there is a flat screen television housed in the ceiling over the master bed that can be automatically dropped down for convenient viewing. There are his-and-hers walk-in closets. The master bath features marble floors, counters and shower surround.

GUEST HOUSE AND OUTDOOR AMENITIESThis estate is the ideal combination of beauty and play. Impressive, yet truly livable and inviting, 41 Diablo Drive provides many amenities not offered on other properties.

The lush gardens designed by Michael Yandle create a storybook setting. Driving through the gated entrance past the Syrah vineyards reminds one of the Napa Valley. Having a tennis court on the property is not only rare, but a distinct advantage. Imagine the fun and camaraderie for and with family and friends. The large level lawns that can accommodate many sports activities are meticulously maintained and breathtakingly beautiful. The entire landscape is watered with the private well. In Marin County this is a real asset.

The salt water swimming pool with spa is strategically placed near the guest house/pool house and is surrounded by masterful stonework. There is also a stately, large outdoor fireplace and patio area for relaxation and enjoying the sunshine and Bay views. With meandering pathways that lead the way around and about this amazing estate, you can “visit” the vineyards, access the front, back and sides of the home, check the vegetable garden, or just stroll.

There are two floors in the fabulous one bedroom, one bath guest house/pool house. Perfect for relaxation and entertaining, the open floor plan also includes a kitchen, dining area, living room with fireplace, and flat screen television.

MARIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIAFOCUS ON KENT WOODLANDSKent Woodlands is nestled at the base of Mt. Tamalpais, and bordered by the towns ofLarkspur and Ross. In 1857, James Ross bought Rancho Punta de Quentin. Mr. Ross, originally from Scotland, arrived in San Francisco from Australia in 1848 and made his considerable fortune in the wholesale liquor business. He set up a trading post called “RossLanding”. Steamers would come up the Corte Madera Creek to access Ross Landing. AlbertEmmet Kent, a Chicago meat packer, bought the land from the Ross estate in 1871. Mr. Kentcame with his wife, Adaline, who later donated twenty three acres of land for a community recreation center; which later became the site for the College of Marin, a California Community College. Albert and Adaline’s son, William, who became a United States Congressman and anardent conservationist, donated Muir Woods as a national park. Albert Kent built his estateand called it “Tamalpais ”, which was later changed to “ Kent “ in the 1890’s. In 1905, withthe opening of the first Post Office, “Kent” was changed to “Kentfield”.

Known for its lush natural landscape, Pine, Redwood and Manzanita trees, and views of Mt.Tamalpais and the Bay, this location remains highly sought after. There is a strong sense of community and the schools are rated as excellent.
