Damn people. Its a list for fun. Relax. Most of you don't camp or have the first clue about the outdoors.True, a lantern from Walmart will work, but sometimes its just fun to do something else. Relax folks. Someof you seriously need a weekend in nature.

Thanks Brian....some of these folks are uptight over this. I hope I never have to camp withthem. Well off to the Smokies and to run the Natahala River. Oh I like the frozen water and thefloor tile thing. Some of the ideas are cute campfire tricks we can use to entertain ourselvesand friends with. Plus never know when you may need to use some of these tactics.

I am a volunteer teacher with Leave No Trace and a good portion of this list really made me cringe. Iwould point out #34 and 35 esspecially. Seriously, you are just further instilling bad behavior in peoplewhile they are out camping and hiking. If you need a trail marker, try hiking somewhere with TRAILS. Justbecause that tape is labeled biodegradable doesn't mean you need to go putting it everywhere, littering thewoods with it. Making a scavenger hunt list for kids with things like sticks and rocks an other natural orhistorical items on it is not only absolutely illegal in the parks system, but teaches those kids that it's ok toremove those things, which is a horrible, horrible habit that many adults grew up with and will never break.I would love to see Buzzfeed do an article on learning outdoor ethics, the staff and most readers couldprobably use it.

God forbid our children should learn to love nature by removing a few leaves, rocks and sticksfrom the woods. I want to protect our natural areas and habitats but there is a point wherestuff like this becomes too much.

Thank you Tracy.... Folks just get outdoors and enjoy yourself, nature, and the other peoplearound you. I love meeting complete strangers while camping and before you know it...a goodtime is had by all. My chance meetings in the outdoors a has created a group of folks (18)total, that now do an annual white water camping trip. These folks coming in from Vermont,Idaho, DC, VA, PA, NY to have a ball and that we do. SO do not forget what camping is about,it is to get back to nature,.....and nature loves to communicate. Do not believe, just listen tothe night next time you in the woods.

    1. Is a fine specific idea, but generically it is a good idea to take along something to put under or in thetent to flatten it out in rough ground. You also want a broom to clear the area first. I have found inflatablemattresses are absolutely perfect for camping, take up little room, quickly inflated with a rechargeablepump, and eliminate all that pain of lying on rocks.

2., 16., 23., 27., 40., are all convoluted lighting ideas. Get a couple flashlights and some lanterns. Theywork. You dont need to find an altoids box or carefully hold your dumbass jug of water with light attachedto it around. 3 is simply stupid, wrong, and whoever made this list should remove it.

    4. What? Make tin-can sandwich bread? Does this person have any idea how stupid this sounds? Nobody isgoing to make bread in a can just to go camping. Ho... See More

It doesn't sound like you have ever "ruffed it" in the woods before. These are actually all verygood sound advice used in the proper setting. For example: tin can bread - well that one is agreat idea for anyone travelling on a river and wishes to to get their store bought bread fromgetting wet!

Or you can avoid bread and eat rice. Rice is cheap, and easy to make. You can also put rice inalmost any container, and it takes up less space. It's also harder to get soggy.

I just wanted to answer a few of your concerns as to the validity of some of these suggestions.

2 (specifically). The water jug+head lamp idea is not to "hold your dumbass jug of water" butto use as a stationary lantern. Instead of using a single use item like a lantern as a light source,it's a way of minimizing and using your headlamp (also known as a flashlight with a strap, so itcan be used as the flashlight you suggested) plus a drinking water source (the jug of water) tocreate a stronger-than-headlamp-alone ambient light. So 2 items can make 3 uses, asopposed to a lantern which is only good for, well, being a lantern.

    4. Like Vicky said, tin can bread is for those who may be travelling through wet environments,or people who may not have a cooler with them. Not all "campers" do so in a stationary place. Some continu... See More

Best idea I've ever seen for a kid scavenger hunt is have them take PICTURES of the items on the list.Nothing gets disturbed AND it teaches them to Look but don't hurt Nature. Can you be quiet enough to geta picture of a deer? How about a butterfly? A Bird? Be sure to turn off the shutter sound on your camera.Be sure to have some easy ones like mushrooms, flowers, leaves and rocks, too. We want to the kids tohave fun exploring nature, not to get frustrated.

I love the idea of the scavenger hunt . even sticks rocks leaves etc. you need all that for aFIRE... the rocks are good to keep the fire contained and to use for boiling water if you haveno pan etc. rocks help keep your back warm or whichever is not toward the fire...etc... Jessyca - my husband's old boss introduced me to "crotch rocks" when we were camping highin the Rockies. You take a warm rock from the fire pit (not too hot - pointing out for those withno common sense) and put it between your thighs. Since your biggest arteries go through thatarea, it warms your whole body.

Actually it does, they forgot the critical ingredient though which most people miss as well. Youhave to add the fluid from inside glow sticks. You only use a sip or two of mt. Dew, and therest is the chemical mixture that actually enhances and extends the effect of the standard glowstick. Awesome for late night fishing trips.

I dont have a picture, but Ive always called this wash up jug Bertha, we take a jug(like an empty and well rinsed bleach jug, something about that size. You poke ahole on the outer ridge of the bottom side about an 1/8 inch or so. You hang it withsome twine on a branch and also tie an old nylon stocking with a bar of soap in it.The jug is filled with water and you can wash with 2 hands by loosening the cap ontop and a stream of water will come out of the side hole near the bottom. Wash withthe soap that stays clean by not being on the ground on table, rinse, then close thecap on top. Bertha is a great way to make clean up easy and fun. And we had funnaming our jug and decorating it with magic marker.she had a funky weird face. Ialso think this idea is much better than the laundry jugs with the push button alreadyon it, because like I said you get 2 hands free at the same time. Bertha is Better and Iam happy to share this idea.have simple fun camping, relax, dont take life soserious. Camping is for fun. Camping is for studying nature and all of its wonders.

I like some of these, but a lot of these will only work if youre car-camping with aland cruiser. Aint nobody got no room in they pack for no folgers can of TP. Youneed to squash that TP flat and take it off the roll! (Ditto for coolers, hand-washingstations, panini presses, coals, peanut-butter lanterns and laundry buckets. Where doyou people camp? At the places where people put lawn flamingos under the awningof their winnebagos?)

ER because of them. We like camping and fishing, and there are some REALLY niceparks near us. I Have used the belts around the tree, we actually used them to stringa small clothes line. Worked great, and we didnt have to bring anything to drive intothe trees to do it. We use the belts to keep our bedding rolled up in transit andstorage, almost all of our gear does double duty. Not everyone wants to totally roughit, and there are some interesting ideas on here. Take what works for you and leavethe rest.

wow. I am awestruck from the comments Ive read about this article. I passed it on tosome friends who were going camping this weekend and they loved the ideas. Theyare a typical US (Kansas) family with two young kids and they want their family toenjoy the great outdoors together. To make great family memories. What has thiscountry of ours come to? Yes, there are people who do not respect our world. Theylitter, they burn, they dont care about othersbut this article is not about them. Atleast not to me or my friends. Its about us who do care about our world and ourneighbors. Its about teaching our kids how to safely and responsibly enjoy the greatoutdoors, so that they may do the same with their children. Lighten up Folksfor thefuture of our worldlighten up.
