How we build you a really good bed that’s really good valueHaving been in the business of designing and making wooden beds formore than 30 years, we’ve developed our own combination of traditionaljoinery and contemporary technology. This enables us to build wooden-slatted beds with the style and elegance to look great in your home andthe strength and durability to provide years of service.

Selecting timber and building your bedAll our beds are made from kiln-dried Scandinavian pine from sustainable sources. This means thatevery tree harvested for timber is replaced by the planting of another, helping to maintain biodiversity.

The basic construction of a slatted wooden bed is simple. Four bedposts stand at the corners.The two at the head end are spanned by some kind of headboard, even if the design requires littlemore than a cross member. The same arrangement is repeated at the foot end. Two long side railsthen connect the head and foot ends, one on each side. This creates a rigid, rectangular frame,raised from the floor by the posts. Fixed to the inside of each side rail there is a sturdy woodenbatten, to support the slats. For extra support, on our double and king-size beds, there is also acentral beam, running from the centre of the headboard to the footboard. The slats are thenarranged along the frame to support the mattress.

The advantages of this construction over that of a divan bed are many. First of all, there are nosprings to wear out in the base, and the wooden slats actually provide superior support. Slats alsoallow free circulation of air under the mattress, keeping it well ventilated, and so are more hygienic.

When it comes time to move, timber slatted beds are easily dismantled and transported. One finaladvantage, of course, is all that handy storage space available beneath the bed.

The McKenzie with Footboard is a variation on one of the mostpopular beds in our range, the Mackenzie (opposite). The raisedfootboard featured in this version creates a more imposingpresence and looks great in larger bedrooms. This photographshows the bed as it appears with a pair of matching finish, regularsize underbed drawers in place beneath it.

The high pointed arch of the headboard, reflecting medieval Gothicarchitecture, and chunky bedposts with our original ‘candlelight’turnings, adds an air of grandeur to any setting. The Gothic looksmagnificent in high-ceilinged, period rooms and in homes convertedfrom former churches. Oak lacquer or Dark Mahogany lacquerfinishes emphasise its character.

UNDERBED DRAWERS (ON WHEELS)

Our handmade underbed drawers help you make use of the valuable space beneath your bed. Drawers have wheels fitted to theunderside so they can be rolled in and out, and can be supplied inall our finishes, to match your bed.

Drawers come in 2 sizes: Regular drawers measure 36.5” (93cm)wide x 9” (23cm) high x 24” (61cm) deep (front-to-back). Large drawers measure 51" (130cm) wide x 9" (23cm) high x 24"(61cm) deep (front-to-back).

Two Regular drawers fit side by side along the length of our beds.You can fit 2 regular drawers alongside each other beneath a single,and up to 4 regular drawers, 2 each side, under a double.

Large drawers may be more suitable if a bedside table prevents adrawer being wheeled in and out at the top end of your bed. In thiscase, you will be able to accommodate 1 large drawer beneath asingle bed or 2 (1 each side) beneath a double.

A few things to think about whenyou’re choosing your mattress.Where choosing a bed is largely a matter of aesthetics, your choice ofmattress can make the difference between years of blissful sleep andcountless nights of tossing and turning. Inferior mattresses providepoor support for your back, inadequate cooling due to poor airflow,excessive transfer of your partner’s movement and lumpiness due toearly deterioration. A cheap mattress usually ends up looking like a verypoor investment indeed. A good quality mattress, however, should keepyou sleeping comfortably for a decade. Your mattress definitely isn’t theplace to cut corners.

Buying a mattressYou can browse through brochures and listen to sales people, but in the end it’s best to lie downand stretch out on a mattress before you buy it. If it’s at all possible, we encourage you to comeinto our showroom in North London and try out the different mattresses. If you’re half of abed-sharing couple, you should bring along your partner as well, as a mattress can responddifferently to two people, especially if one is considerably heavier than the other.

Over to you!We sell three main ‘types’ ofmattress: Open Coil, Pocket-Sprung and those made fromVisco-Elastic foam.

Open Coilis the ‘standard’ constructionmethod used for good qualitymattresses, and firmerexamples of these are morecommonly known asOrthopaedic mattresses.

These mattresses containsprings of about a 3 inch diameter, clipped together attop and bottom, enclosedwithin a metal rod framework. This unit supports your weight.Layers of padding then coverthe top and bottom of the unitso the springs cannot be felt.The precise material used doeshave some bearing on how firmor soft the mattress feels. Thewire used in the spring is usuallyeither 12.5 gauge, found in veryfirm mattresses, or 13.5 gaugefor medium-firm mattresses.

Pocket-Sprungmattresses are generally a stepup from open coil due to themethod of their construction. These mattresses containaround three times as manysprings as the open coilmattress, with each encasedin its own cloth bag. Assembling your bedAlthough our beds are a fairly simple job to assemble, we understand thatyou might prefer us to do it for you.All our drivers have worked with us for years, and assemble beds for customersday after day, taking great care as they do so. There is a small charge of £15 per bed for this service.Simply tell us if you’d like to have your bed assembled when you place your order, and we’ll make the arrangements.

Taking away your old bedIf you let us know in advance, we can arrange to take away your old bed when wedeliver your new bed, and dispose of it responsibly at an authorised amenity.We offer this service within the London postal district only, and make a charge of£15 per item (a bed frame and mattress together thus cost £30) to cover the costof disposal.
