SACARAMENT OF CONFIRMATION As a mother of five children, I remember when my youngest child received the Sacrament of Confirmation. “Whew,” I thought, that was a lot of sacraments of initiation that we celebrated! Most Catholics know that the sacraments of initiation are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. However, many are mistaken regarding the meaning and purpose of the Sacrament of Confirmation. It is not a “graduation from religious education,” because we are called to a life long journey of maturing faith. It is not an acknowledgement that young people who were baptized as infants can now “declare that they want to be Catholic.” When they were baptized, we welcomed them into the Church as they died to their old self and rose to a new life in Christ, receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
So, why do we have the Sacrament of Confirmation? When we are confirmed we receive the seal of the Holy Spirit. This seal is called a character, marking us forever called to fulfill the Church’s mission for the rest of our life. The effects of Confirmation are: that it brings an increase and deepening of our baptism grace. We are rooted more deeply in our identity as adopted sons and daughter of God, and that we are more firmly united to Christ. The sacrament increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, renders our bond with the Church more perfect, and gives us a special strength to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is intimately connected to the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. This is expressed and acknowledged when we renew our baptismal promises during the Rite. Additionally, since Vatican II, candidates do not choose a confirmation name because they were already given a Christian name at their baptism, which further links the Sacraments together.
This weekend, twenty-two of our young adults received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Monsignor Fran Cilia, Vicar General of our diocese. They are witnesses to what the Lord has done in each of their lives. Witness was originally, (and still is), a legal term for someone who testifies to what he or she knows from personal experience. As Christian witnesses, we testify to what we know: that Jesus Christ was crucified and rose, and is life and hope for all the world. What can we do this week to witness the teachings of Christ and the Church to others in our life?

GENERAL INFORMATION Tuesday, May 9, 2017 was the 47th year of celebrating the Saint Pius X Awards Banquet in our Diocese. This award acknowledges the faith filled people in our Diocese who have volunteered their time and talent in support of Cathechetical Ministry. Awards are given for 10, 25, 30, and 35 years of loving and generous service. This year, St. Justin parish was proud to recognize Yvonne Montes and Catherine Pham for ten years of service.
Yvonne is the familiar face you see during 10:30 a.m. Mass who is sitting with our RCIA Adapted for Children catechumens. Yvonne loving teaches them about our faith, and prepares them for all of the liturgical rites and celebrations that is part of the RCIA journey. This journey culminates when the children are fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Catherine is our 4-year-old teacher for Ongoing Faith Formation. She teaches our children that “I am Special,” about God’s wonderful creation, and God’s love for them. Cat has also participated in three World Youth Day’s and encourages anyone who has the opportunity to just go! St. Justin Parish congratulates Yvonne and Catherine. We are blessed to have you in our Parish!

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.
COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you’re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the “when in Rome” rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and ‘Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or ‘devotion. The rule is to make a ‘profound bow, called a “metasis,” toward the altar—bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ’s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar’s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! —Rev. Stand and be Counted Registering in a parish is a
declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a
commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds.
Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even
funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and
Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a
registered, active and contributing member.
So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are
available in the Parish Ministry Center or online at
www.st-justin.org.
