The Ames Community School Board approved abudget in May 2005 that closed Roosevelt and NorthwoodElementary Schools. The budget was designed to cover aprojected short fall of $1.3 million due to declining enroll-ment in the Ames Community School District;. The 6-1vote was met with tears, anger and disappointment fromthe 100 people in attendance. A passionate parent organi-zation was unsuccessful in trying to save one school bypresenting alternative budget options to the school board.“Our entire community is indeed sadly affected by the lossof two schools,” said board member Jane Acker.Roosevelt celebrated its 80th anniversary this year.Northwood was opened in 1970.

As two elementary schools were closed, the AmesCommunity School District opened a new middle school. The new school is located at 3915 Mortensen Road andcost $26 million. The middle school now houses grades 6,7 and 8 while the elementary schools teach Kindergartenthrough 5th grade.

The AHS Class of 1974 began their reunion weekendon Friday, July 30, 2005 at the Basil in Ames. There wereover 150 people registered to attend; however, many moregraduates showed up at the door to help make the night abig success. It was great to see “old” friends and reminisceabout our lives 30 years ago and what has happenedsince. Some of us did have to take a peek at a name tagor two, just to be sure we knew whom we were talking with!

Saturday morning, many AHS graduates met at theAmes Golf and Country Club for a best ball golf outing at8:00 a.m. After golf, we met in the clubhouse for lunch andbeverages, golf stories were shared, golf games wereanalyzed, prizes were awarded, and a very good time washad by all.

On Saturday night, a buffet dinner was served atHickory Hall with nearly 200 graduates and spouses inattendance. Mark Dekovic gave a presentation on thechanges that have occurred since high school regardingthe news media, the internet and having children. Also aslide show was shown of the 1974 seniors and sadly, thosewho are no longer with us. Dr. and Mrs. Farrar graciouslyaccepted our invitation to attend with Dr. Farrar giving us afew words of wisdom he had learned over the years. Athank you was sent to the Farrar’s with our appreciationand reassurance that we did listen to him, this time! Therewas music playing all night long from the 70’s; however itwasn’t to be heard over the conversation. The evening flewby with too little time to catch up with everyone.

Walk of Fame Gets New HomeThe Walk of Fame is being re-installed at Ames High School this fall. It was in 1998 that the Walk of Fame campaign

began to raise money for a fitness center. At that time, purchasing a brick or granite helped raise the almost $250,000needed for construction of the facility. Recent construction at Ames High School made it necessary to remove the Walkof Fame temporarily so that the engraved bricks and granites would not be damaged.

The new home for the Walk of Fame is still near the Paul R. Jones Fitness Center, just east of the new wrestlingFroom. The walk will have a new design; however AHS will still be displayed prominently in 12 x 12 granite.

You can still honor, or remember, a loved one, student, athlete, band member, teacher, or even a special occasion byYYpurchasing a brick or granite in the Walk of Fame. By purchasing a marker in the walk, you are leaving a permanentsymbol of your support to Ames High School and the Ames Education Foundation.

Funds raised through the Walk of Fame will go in part to provide ongoing maintenance and supervision for the PaulR. Jones Fitness Center. In addition, your donation will assist the Ames Education Foundation to finance worthy schoolprojects that the regular district budget could not afford.

If you would like to purchase a brick or granite, please contact Jean Kresse at 515-268-6630 or [email protected]

Employer Matching GiftsDid you know that your donation to the Ames Education Foundation might be worth more than the amount written on

your check? Your company may be one of the many employers providing a matching gift to charitable organizations. Oneexample is Principal Financial. During the 2005 calendar year, Principal Financial will match an employee contribution upto $500 or as little as $50. That means if Principal Financial employs you and you make a gift of $500, the Ames Educa-tion Foundation ends up with $1,000!

Most business/corporate matching gift programs require you to complete a brief form and submit it with your gift to theAmes Education Foundation. We will do our part to complete the form and mail it in. The Ames Education Foundation isa 501(c) (3) organization, which is necessary for many matching gifts programs. If you aren’t sure if your business/corporation has a matching gift program, contact your human resource department to learn more. It could make your giftprovide an even bigger impact to the Ames Education Foundation.

Thank you for your support of the Ames Education Foundation, which is committed to enhancing excellence in educa-tion within the Ames Community School District.

To the Ames High Alumni Association,

We are the co-chairs of the Ames Veterans Memorial Committee, which was authorized by the Ames Patriotic Council toundertake the planning and construction of a public veterans memorial for Ames. The goal of the memorial is to honor theveterans from all eras, both wartime and peacetime. We are writing to invite all Ames High Graduates and their familiesand friends to assist with this important community project.

The committee has been working hard for more than two years, and we have made considerable progress. We sought aprominent public site, one that would be regularly visible to large numbers of people. Mayor Tedesco and the City Councilhave approved the use of the city-owned lot on the northeast corner of 5th and Grand, a superb location.

We also wanted a design that would embody four main themes. These are:* honoring the contributions of all who have served our country in both wartime and peacetime* making a special memorial to those who have fallen* educating young people about the value of freedom and the sacrifices needed to sustain our liberty* inspiring all members of the community to continued service

To accomplish this, the Veterans Memorial Committee solicited design concepts from several Iowa artists. The committeehas chosen a concept submitted by Christopher Bennett of Keosauqua, who has designed and constructed a number ofpublic memorials and sculptures in Iowa. The design incorporates a flag and pole and figures of an eagle, representingthe necessity of strength, and a dove, representing the goal of peace. The site will have a curved wall, stone benches, and nice landscaping.

We have been working hard to build community support. Our committee has broad representation from veterans groups, civic activists, the business community, and arts groups. We have had strong cooperation and support from the Mayor, the City Council, the city staff, and the Public Art Commission. We have received endorsements from virtually every civicorganization in Ames.

The Ames Foundation, an organization with an established record and reputation in local philanthropy, has agreed toserve as the fiscal agent for the project. Since the Foundation is a tax-exempt organization, donations made through thatentity will be tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Over 200 individual donations have already been received, in addition to donations from over 50 businesses and organi-zations. Many other pledges have been received. Several businesses have pledged in-kind contributions of labor and/ormaterials for the construction of the memorial. In all, approximately $80,000 has been committed to the project already.

We would like to invite all Ames High graduates and the families and friends to help make the memorial a reality. Tax-deductible donations may be made by sending a check payable to “Ames Foundation - Ames Veterans Memorial” to theFoundation at P.O. Box 213, Ames, 50010.

We particularly would like to call your attention to a special feature of the donation campaign. A brick walkway will leadinto the center of the memorial. Each donor of $125 or more may dedicate a brick to be engraved with the name of aveteran or other person or organization. The names of veterans will be indicated by a special star in the engraving.Donors may designate multiple bricks for donations in multiples of $125.

Our goal is to raise a total of $170,000 so that construction may begin within the next year. To reach this goal will be achallenge. However, we firmly believe from the expressions of support we have already received that this goal is feasibleand that the result will be a fitting memorial of which our community will be proud for years to come.

For more information and a brick order form, please visit our web site at www.amesveteransmemorial.com.
