Top 5 Must-Do’s for Building Corporate Partnerships

1. IDENTIFY A SPONSOR/CHAMPION: Pitch your pro bono program to someone within the company who will champion it. It is often someone with a certain level of influence and authority within the HR or CSR department.

2. LISTEN TO THEIR NEEDS: If a company is interested in speaking with you about a pro bono program, it's likely they are interested in one. Not every company is the same. Find out what the company is looking for to position your program to meet their needs.

3. SHOW YOUR VALUE ADD AS A PARTNER: Frame the relationship as a partnership. Demonstrate the value of pro bono through case studies. Show the company how your expertise and experience will make their job easier.

4. BE FLEXIBLE AND PROVIDE OPTIONS: This links to #2. Companies have different interests and resources. We offer pro bono programs from one day to six months long. You can also be flexible within a program, e.g. with the timing.

5. FOLLOW UP AND DON’T GIVE UP: Building a true partnership takes time. Take the initiative to follow up and don't give up just because one company says no.

Top 3 Things to Look for in Corporate Partners

1. LEADERSHIP COMMITMENT: Developing and running a pro bono program requires a certain amount of time, commitment and communication from the company. Leadership buy-in from the top and at the management level is important to successfully execute and integrate the program into the company’s culture.

2. FINANCIAL INVESTMENT: Partnering with a company to develop and offer a pro bono program requires resources from the intermediary. A company that truly values the program and partnership will make a financial investment to support the capacity of the intermediary to do this work.

3. COMMITMENT TO EVALUATION: Commitment to evaluation is important, as it is a key component of our pro bono programs to measure, demonstrate and improve the experience and impact.
