Starting with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 2016 through the anniversary of the Japanese surrender onboard USS Missouri on September 2, 2020. “World War II history has always been of intense interest to both our service and the country at large – and for a very good reason” said Naval History and Heritage Command Director Sam Cox. “It was a worldwide conflict with existential consequences that continue to unfold, and it affected every American.” America is a maritime nation whose security is tied to the sea and depends on a capable and credible

AUGUST 2020
From the Helm: Another month of COVID-19 restrictions and challenges to our sailing schedule, as well as social networking. As the positive cases have increased, understandably, our members have been reluctant to venture forth to sail or support the Race Committee. However, we were able to complete the Bikini Regatta on July 18 with three boats participating, much below our “normal” competitor’s group from New Orleans, Mississippi and our local clubs of 6-10 female skippered boats. Many thanks to the three skippers and their crews who did compete: Julie Connerley, Ellen Hunt and Kim Kaminski. See the photos and results elsewhere in The Foghorn. At the Bridge meeting July 29, we voted to move Commodore’s Cup #4 to September 19 and delay Navy Cup to October 10-11. Further, the Bridge asked Fleet Captain Thomas “Oscar” Robertson to query the Pensacola Beach YC and Pensacola YC Fleet Captains about their club’s interest in participating in Navy Cup this year. Navy Cup is a unique race on Pensacola Bay, in that it is “Club” competition rather than individual Skippers and boats competing against one another. In the case of Navy Cup, on Saturday, each club is allowed an unlimited number of PHRF class boats to enter under a single registration fee (paid by the respective yacht club) but only the top three finishers are scored in each race. On Sunday, we hold One-Design races in three different classes of small boats: Sunfish (two one-person crews per club); Laser (one one-person crew per club); and either Hunter, 420 or Hobie Wave whichever are available (one two-person crew per club). It is a great club motivator and usually generates some good excitement and memorable moments. Let’s hope COVID-19 backs off enough to allow us to hold it this year in October. Stay safe, stay healthy and pray for a friend. Due to the current situation, the August General Membership Meeting is cancelled. We will let

Sailing. The word conjures up images of
sparkling water, blue skies, and sunshine. Christopher Cross immortalized this
popular activity in his 1980 song “Sailing”.
“Well, it’s not far down to paradise, at least
it’s not for me. If the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility. Oh, the
canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me.”
N.Y.C.P. Meeting- July 9, 2020 Hello All, Every day we meet new challenges of Covid-19. Unfortunately, due to these challenges we have been unable to meet in person as a club. However, our Commodore Ken Pyle is still putting together a weekly email update titled “Flotsam and Jetsam” to keep the membership informed and entertained during our time apart. We are all looking forward to the days of meeting up with all of our members and their guests. If you are new members to the club - we would like to welcome you. We look forward to seeing you at the meetings. If you bring any new friends with you to the meeting be sure to let us know so we can introduce you or your friends to our members-you never know who may want to join our ranks and become the newest Navy Yacht Club member.

GALLEY BITES By Julie Connerley This month's menu item, Grilled Asian Ginger Pork Chops, is brought to you by Allrecipes. Extra tips from Allrecipes are provided in parentheses. The prep time is 15 minutes; cooking time is 8 minutes; and it will be ready in 2 hours, 25 minutes. Each pork chop has 136 calories. INGREDIENTS 1 orange 2 Tbl soy sauce 2 Tbl minced fresh ginger
1 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp garlic chili paste (found in the Asian or gourmet section of most supermarkets. Once opened, store in the fridge where it will keep for several months.) 1/2 tsp salt 6 pork loin chops, 1/2 inch-thick (while the recipe doesn't state, you can use bone-in 8 ounce chops. The bone helps keep the chop moist). INSTRUCTIONS ● Remove 1 tablespoon finely grated zest from the orange, then squeeze 1/2 cup juice. In a shallow container, mix orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, chili paste and salt. ● Add pork chops, then turn to coat evenly. Chill, covered, turning the chops in the marinade occasionally--for at least 2 hours or overnight. (The longer you marinate them, the more flavorful they'll be. After removing chops from marinade, rub off most of the garlic and ginger or it will burn the grill!) ● Preheat grill for medium to medium-high heat, and lightly oil grate. ● Grill pork chops for 5 to 6 minutes per side, or to desired doneness. (If you cook your pork to 145 degrees F, the meat may still be slightly pink--and that's okay! Don't panic and overcook them or they will dry out.) Note: You can marinate these chops before leaving for work in the morning and they'll be ready to cook when you get home. The marinade would work equally well on a chicken or a firm-fleshed fish like swordfish, salmon, or tuna. Bon appétit!
58th Navy Cup Navy Cup 2020
It is our hope to have a full regatta experience with an after-race Awards Presentation (even if it is online!) for the 58th Anniversary of the Navy Cup. We plan to keep in mind social distancing & health issues – therefore we have moved the date for the Navy Cup to October 10 & 11, 2020 (in hopes of better opportunities to accomplish this goal). If you would like to help with this activity, please contact the Navy Cup Committee – Ken Pyle, Patrick Sargent and Kim Kaminski.

Hello All, The 40th Annual Bikini Regatta was held on July 18th. We had 3 competitors on the water, although we were small in number, all those present had a large time at the event. Hey, we all need a little joy during these days filled with negative and sad news. Congratulations to Julie Connerley, Ellen Hunt and Kim Kaminski and their crews who persevered and sailed for this year’s race. Our Next Race has been changed to the Commodore’s Cup Race #4 / Bay Championship #11 to be held on September 19th. (Note: The Navy Cup was pushed back to October and the CC #4 took the September Date.) The Game Plans are in the works for setting up this racing event – a game plan with restrictions and a game plan with slightly fewer restrictions (depending on the status of the base and the community at the time of the event). Stay informed about any updates to this activity by visiting our website www.navypnsyc.org or the email “Flotsam and Jetsam” from our Commodore or if you have any questions…give us a call. I would like to add a request for support of the preparations for the Race Committee. Help would be needed to break out the marks, flags and to launch Striper as well as carry water, ice, sandwiches out to the signal boat. (If you are able to help, contact me.) If you are interested in being trained to help with our regattas and any of our other yachting activities coming up in 2020-2021 – please, let me know we would love to have you help. There is always something fun to do!

"Racing News" – Tom “Oscar” Robertson
Hello All, The 40th Annual Bikini Regatta was held on July 18th. Although we only had 3 boats entered into the race – the team at Navy elected to host this legacy event in honor of the 40th Anniversary. It was a great day on the water for all – the race committee (thanks to our PRO Mark Smith and his wife Libby), the lady competitors – Julie Connerley Ellen Hunt and Kim Kaminski, and to our new committee trainees Roni and Steven Boomer. In addition special thanks to our ever vigilant Molly Werner, our Committee Boat Sand Shark and its owners Frank and Penny Bean and of course all of our important race committee support team including our Commodore Ken Pyle and especially the Bikini founder Bev Stagg (who received this year’s Spirit of Bikini Award). Our next adventure on the water is now the Commodore’s Cup Race #4 / Bay Championship #11 to be held on September 19th also known as “International Talk Like a Pirate Day”. (Note: Navy Cup originally rescheduled to be held on September 19th and 20th has moved once again to be held now on October 10th & 11th.) If you know someone who has a power boat or sailboat and would like to be invited to participate in our racing activities, please let me know and I will be happy to contact them. We are still operating in the confines of the Covid-19 restrictions and are always welcome to ideas for continuing our yacht club efforts. Stay informed and watch for email or website updates. Stay safe and carry on….

FLEET CAPTAIN
Pensacola Bay Championship Series The hope and idea for the Pensacola Bay Championship Series would encourage greater participation by everyone in all of the regattas on the bay and not just in your home club regattas. This idea was initiated in 2016 and the hope is to have this series continue for years to come - there will be 12 regattas in the series and only 8 races would have to be sailed to qualify a yacht for the Bay Championship…thereby offering the potential for 4 throw-outs or regattas that could be skipped if a yacht wasn’t able to compete in all 12. The series is open to all boats owned by a member in good standing of one of the Pensacola area yacht clubs. A Pensacola Offshore Championship will be sailed within the series and awards for these 3 offshore races* only in 2020. Boats need not sail in any of the other Pensacola Bay Championship series races in order to compete for the Offshore Championship and would need to race in only 2 of the 3 to qualify. There’s definitely room for multihull divisions as well as PHRF racing and cruising and One-Design divisions, youth divisions, etc. 2020 Pensacola Bay Championship Series Jan 25 Frostbite Regatta – PBYC (Bay Champ #1) Feb 8 Valentine Regatta – PBYC (Bay Champ #2) Feb 29 Maxine #1/CC#1 – NYCP (Bay Champ #3) Mar 21 Maxine #2 /Rites of Spring – PBYC (Bay Champ #4) Mar 28 Maxine #3 – PYC (Bay Champ #5) Postponed May 9 *Sea Buoy – PBYC (Bay Champ #8) May 23 Maxine #3 – PYC (Bay Champ #5) June 13 CC#2/Anniversary Regatta – NYCP (Bay Champ #6) CC #3 – NYCP (Bay Champ #10) June 14 CC Race Make-up Date June 20 Cancer Society (Fiesta of Five Flags) Regatta – PYC (Bay Champ #7) June 26-28 *Gulfport-Pensacola–GYC/PYC (Bay Champ #9) Sep 19 CC#4/Veterans – NYCP (Bay Champ #11) Oct 11 CC Race Make-up Date Oct 16-18 *WFORC– PYC (Offshore Race) (Bay Champ #12)

Navy Flying Scot Sailing
NYCP Flying Scot boat is back at the Navy Base. If you are interested in practicing with the racing crews or just would like to go for a sail let us know and we will work out a time with you and be happy to help with any instructions necessary for you to enjoy our club boat along with this beautiful place we call home. The Flying Scot is a classic boat that never goes out of style.

The Navy Yacht Club’s new flying scot in action (pictured with the Navy Blue & Gold Spinnaker sail in the center) at the Ft. Walton Yacht Club’s Meigs Regatta held on July 11th and 12th, 2009. Go Navy!
The Flying Scot, a 19-foot centerboard sloop, is one of the oldest and largest one-design sailboat classes in the world. The late Sandy Douglass designed and built the boat and raced it for many years. More than 6,000 Flying Scots have been built over the last 60 years. Douglass also designed and built the Thistle and the Highlander.
In 1998, the Flying Scot was inducted in the American Sailboat Hall of Fame. Our builder, Harry Carpenter, is a Life Member of our class and races regularly at his home club and in several regattas every year around the country.
The Flying Scot is an outstanding racing boat and cruising boat and is used extensively in adult learn-to-sail programs throughout the country.
The Flying Scot Sailing Association is one of the strongest one-design class associations in the world. Our strict adherence to the one-design concept means that a Flying Scot built this year will remain compatible and competitive for years to come with newer as well as older boats.

Gulf Yachting Association (GYA)
Activities
Julie Connerley The Gulf Yachting Association conducts its Semi-Annual meeting every year in conjunction with the Lipton Challenge. Although the 100th annual Lipton Challenge has been canceled this year, the show must go on as they say. The GYA Executive Committee is finalizing plans for the Semi-Annual meeting. It will be held at Bay Waveland Yacht Club on Saturday, September 5th. The YC is also hosting a regatta that day. No GYA committee meetings are scheduled at the host club prior to the in-person BOD meeting. Recognizing that some representatives may not be able to travel, attending the meeting via call in/virtually will be extended if requested prior to the meeting. Full details will be provided in the official meeting notice. In other GYA news, the Centennial Committee continues to meet monthly planning for the 100th anniversary gala event to be held at Southern Yacht Club in 2021 (hopefully). Sail Safe, Have Fun!

Please be sure to check the Navy Yacht Club website: www.navypnsyc.org for all of the yacht club news such as revised event dates, upcoming meetings, sign-up for activities or sailboat crew, information about the club and notice of races as well as other contact info. Also check out the photos from the Navy Yacht Club activities throughout the year. If you have a picture to submit …be sure to let us know. Have you taken any digital photos lately? Maybe you have some photos from a recent trip or photos of the kids or grandkids? Saved any important documents lately, like a 1099R, a birth certificate, or the warrantee for that new TV? Whether you download photos or any other files, you need to be sure you save them to your computer so you can print them, or just view them when you have the time. But, remember, computers do crash, and it may happen to you. When they do crash there goes all those important photos or documents. To ensure you do not lose any valuable files, make sure you back them up regularly to the cloud, or to an external hard drive. A one or a two Terra Byte hard drive can be purchased for fewer than one hundred dollars and set up to automatically back up your files on a regular basis. It is money well spent, especially if it saves those pictures and documents that are so important to you.

Who else in our Navy Yacht Club family has an interesting moment in history here on the Pensacola Naval Air Station?
Navy Yacht Club Pensacola has a long
prestigious history:
• Founded by flight students at NASP in
1931
• Navy Cup--Originated in 1962, with the trophy provided by the US Navy. A unique
club competition concept that was, by
request of the base, part of the 1964 50th
Anniversary Celebration of NASP
• *The race to Isla Mujeres celebrating over 50 years was only possible because of the
collaborative efforts of NYCP and NASP
• *Hosted the Cradle of Naval Aviation Regatta that commemorated the 75th
Anniversary of Naval Aviation
• *The Bikini Regatta, originated by Lloyd
and Beverly Stagg, brought a new concept in female competitive sailing to Pensacola
Bay that has been replicated by other local
clubs • *NYCP continues to honor its Military roots,
offering military students the opportunity
to compete on the water at a minimal membership cost
• *NYCP says "thanks" to those who have'
given so much for our freedom. The originator of Wounded American Veterans
Event, WAVE, is "rolling" around Florida,
thanks to adoption by the Florida Commodores Association. This "Day on
the Bay" is a labor of love for hosting yacht
clubs
• NYCP supports the Dan Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarship
• In 2011, Kathy Champagne searched
through vintage GOSPORTs, and collaborated with Hill Goodspeed, Naval
Aviation Museum Historian, to reveal the
following NYCP sailors, who are most likely our founders:
*A. Dixon winged in 1931
*William Masland winged in 1931 *H. Starves winged in 1931
*J.H. Smith winged in 1932
We have been entrusted with a rich legacy,
for which we should feel honored to protect.

Viva Florida Fun Fact
As the Nation’s First settlement attempt, the Pensacola Bay Area plays a significant role in over 500 years of history that helped to create the State of Florida. In honor of this history be on the lookout for monthly Viva-related fun facts about Pensacola!
Viva Pensacola! Fun Facts It was one of the great dramas of interwar aviation as three
PN-9 flying boats made ready to launch from San Francisco
on a planned flight to Hawaii on Aug. 31, 1925. Mechanical
difficulties prevented one plane from taking off and forced another to turn back, leaving the airplane commanded by
Commander John Rodgers, Naval Aviator No. 2, to press on alone. Lack
of fuel necessitated a landing short of the goal, Rodgers and
his crew lost at sea for nine days as they used the fabric on
their aircraft’s wings to rig sails and guide their flying boat
toward land. Eventually found by a submarine, the crew
received a hero’s welcome in Hawaii, the distance their
plane traveled before being forced down (1,841.2 miles)
was recognized as a world record for seaplanes.
Viva Florida – Promoting Florida’s History and Culture It was a distinction that no Naval aviator wanted, but Lt.
Jack L. Fruin had reason to be thankful when he floated
down to Earth beneath his parachute on Aug. 9, 1949. Just
minutes before, he had been traveling at a speed of more than 575 mph in his F2H Banshee when he experienced an in-flight emergency. When he pulled the handle and shot
out of the cockpit, he became the first pilot in the United
States to use an ejection seat for an emergency escape. On Aug. 5, 1964, Navy aircraft off the carriers
Constellation (CVA 64) and Ticonderoga (CVA 14)
executed the first air attack by United States forces against
North Vietnam, which signaled an escalation of the war in
Southeast Asia. Lt. j.g. Richard Sather was shot down and
killed in action on that day, while another pilot, Lt. j.g.
Everett Alvarez Jr., managed to eject from his crippled
aircraft. He became the first Naval aviator held as a prisoner
by the North Vietnamese. His repatriation did not come
until 1973.
Pensacola Fun Fact! Aug. 12, 1957, was a typical summer day on the Panhandle,
the sunbathers on the beach little aware of tests underway in
the Gulf of Mexico off Pensacola. On board the aircraft
carrier Antietam (CVS 36), an F3D Skyknight made the
first of 50 landings on the flight deck, uncommon in the fact
that they were the first shipboard tests of the Automatic
Carrier Landing System, which was designed to bring an
aircraft aboard in any weather without assistance from the
pilot.

Basically, members of the club can submit pictures - to the Foghorn Editor or an NYCP board member - which have the Burgee or our license plate somewhere in the photograph. Pictures can be submitted at any time electronically or dropping them off at one of the club meetings Foghorn and selection of the pictures which are unique and of interest to the club members will be in the running for an award at the end of the year. Club members or their guests are eligible to participate.

58th Navy Cup
58th Anniversary of the NAVY CUP will be held this year on the
Rescheduled Date - October 10 & 11, 2020
Our hope is that the Corona Virus Pandemic will soon be over and we can look to the future of returning
to the activities we love to do. Please advise your advertising contacts that we will not be putting
together a brochure for this year due to the uncertainties of the COVID 19 status, but we are planning
on returning to the Navy Cup Brochure for the 2021 Navy Cup Event.
We will Need YOUR HELP in getting advertisements for our 2021 Navy Cup Brochure which helps to
cover our costs in putting on the regatta event – these costs include safety set-ups, sanitizers, etc., food,
trophies, equipment, facilities, etc. In addition, funds secured by the brochure also help support our Dan
Smith Memorial Youth Sailing Scholarships and the W.A.V.E. Day on the Bay sailing events for veterans.
Make note of the businesses you frequent online or in person (especially a business that provided service
during all of our corona virus conditions) that may be interested in advertising in our brochure for next
year – please send them by mail or email the information invoice flyer for advertising (which can be found
below or on our website) or contact one of the members of the Navy Cup Brochure Committee with your
business contact information and we will be happy to reach out to that business in the future.
This year will be another historic year for our club and the nation…so mark your calendars and make
plans to keep informed of all the upcoming information on our activities.
