Queen’s Baton Relay
The Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) is a Games tradition that celebrates the Commonwealth’s diversity and creates excitement
for the sports and cultural festival to come.
The Queen’s Baton carries a message from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the Commonwealth’s athletes to come together in peaceful and friendly competition.
After arriving in Australia on 24 December 2017, it will travel across the country for 100 days before arriving at the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018 when the message will be read out to officially open the Games.
The GC2018 Relay will be the longest and the most accessible ever, not just passing through, but spending quality time in each community it visits, spanning 70 nations and territories and 230,000kms.
The Queen’s Baton arrives in the Gold Coast on 1 April. Check out the relay course at gc2018.com/qbr to find the best viewing spots and to cheer on your local batonbearers.
For further information visit gc2018.com/qbr

Rethink your travel
As part of your GC2018 travel planning, we encourage you to consider the following solutions:
RE-TIME your travel outside
of peak times
RE-MODE your travel – cycling or walking may be quicker
than car
RE-ROUTE your travel to avoid congested roads
REDUCE your travel during GC2018
where possible
Temporary park ‘n’ rides will service specific GC2018 venues. They are free for ticketed spectators to use but will need to be pre-booked. Use the Games Journey Planner to plan your journey, find out which park ‘n’ ride services the venue you need to get to and to pre-book your spot.
Important information for getting around the city
Whether you are heading to an event or moving around the city, here are our top travel tips during GC2018:
Tip 1: Plan ahead Don’t leave your journey planning to the last minute. The best way for most spectators to access events will be walking, cycling and public transport.
To help you plan your journey, download the Games Journey Planner app. Tip 4: Public transport
is free for ticketed spectatorsFree public transport will be available for ticketed spectators travelling to and from competition events on the South East Queensland TransLink network. Just show your same day GC2018 ticket upon boarding.*
*Free travel will terminate at 3am the day after your event and is not available on the Airtrain service.
Tip 3: Walking or cycling may be quickerWalking and cycling may be the best way to get to the event(s) if you are staying close by. Bicycle parking will be available near the venues.
Tip 2: Leave the car at homeAs there will be no venue parking and some roads will be restricted, why not leave the car at home and use the free public transport included with your ticket?
Tip 5: Allow more time for travelThere may be traffic and transport delays when travelling to and from events. Please keep this in mind when planning your journey so you can arrive early and enjoy the atmosphere.
Tip 6: Enjoy this once in a lifetime experienceGet involved and enjoy yourself.

Active travel
During the Games may be the perfect time to make active travel part of your daily routine.
Cycling or walking for shorter trips particularly those under 45 minutes might be quicker than the way you normally travel. Try walking to the local shops, school or work. Or, for a recreational stroll, try using one of the great Gold Coast walking tracks.
The Gold Coast has approximately 800 kilometres of bikeways that link neighbourhoods, schools, parks, and interconnect with major transit routes. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular for commuting and recreation. It is cheaper than driving, causes less pollution and can be quicker for short trips, especially in peak times.
SHUTTLE BUSES• Shuttles will also operate across the Gold Coast for ticketed spectators and accredited workforce to use.
• The shuttles will travel between GC2018 transport facilities including temporary Games park ‘n’ rides, GC2018 Transport Hubs and transit malls at competition venues.
PARKING CHANGES AT TRAIN STATIONSThere will be temporary changes to commuter parking at some park ‘n‘ rides on the Gold Coast during GC2018:
• Parkwood station – ticketed GC2018 spectator and pre-booked parking only
• Robina station – full car park closure from 13–15 April 2018
• Helensvale station – reduced parking
• Nerang station – full eastern car park closure
TEMPORARY BUS STOP CHANGESAt various times over the Games period, Gold Coast bus services will experience disruptions as a result of GC2018 events including the:
• Queen’s Baton Relay (1–4 April 2018)
• Triathlon (5–7 April 2018)
• Road Race – Time Trial (10 April 2018)
• Road Race – Cycling (14 April 2018)
• Marathon (15 April 2018).
Services travelling through affected areas will be diverted and multiple bus stops will be closed as a result of traffic changes around venues, Festival 2018, and for safety and security reasons.
Public transport
With so much happening across the entire city during the Games, expect all of the Gold Coast to be busier.
Every day will be different so plan ahead!
During the Games, Gold Coast public transport will be increased with:
• Trams operating 24 hours a day, every 7.5 minutes or better from 7am–11pm.
• 12 high frequency bus routes travelling every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm.
• Trains every 10 minutes or better (on average) on the Gold Coast line, with hourly services between 1am and 5am.

What is the Games Route Network? The Games Route Network (GRN) is a series of designated roads linking the Commonwealth Games Village to all competition and noncompetition venues and airports.
As a requirement of a host city, it is the most efficient means of facilitating safe, secure and reliable transport for athletes and officials.
During the Games, the roads on the GRN will generally be available for use by all traffic but they will be busier than usual depending on the events in the area.
A key section of the GRN is referred to as the Core GRN which is where Games Lanes will be activated.
Games Lanes are dedicated traffic lanes which will be reserved only for use by public transport, official GC2018 vehicles and emergency services and will be clearly marked and signed.
More detailed information about the GRN and Games Lanes is available at getsetforthegames.com/grn

What else do I need to know?
WASTE SERVICES
Your bin collection time is changing!
To accommodate changes in traffic conditions and increased waste service demands, all bin collection times will change during GC2018 and in the weeks leading up to the Games.
To be prepared for this change, it is essential to ensure your bins are placed out for collection the night before your service day to avoid a missed service as collections may commence any time from midnight. Unfortunately during GC2018 we will be unable to return for missed services.
Please be mindful when placing your bins out to ensure our waste trucks can access them.
If your bin needs replacing or fixing, there will be delays to this service over the Games period.
WATERWAYSDuring the Games, there will also be temporary changes to the local waterways. These will include:
• introduction of Protective Security Zones where Police will be able to apply additional powers
• access changes for businesses that operate at waterside locations
Detailed information regarding waterways and timings can be found at getsetforthegames.com
POLICING AND SECURITYThe Queensland Police Service (QPS) will ensure an enhanced protective environment to minimise disruption to this sporting event and promote a safe and secure enjoyment of the Games for athletes, participants, spectators and the Queensland community.
Further Information:
• Unified Response queries – [email protected] or (07) 3015 3346
• National Security Hotline – 1800 123 400 or nationalsecurity.gov.au
• Safeguarding Queensland – safeguarding.qld.gov.au
• GC2018 QPS crime prevention queries – [email protected]
• Non-emergency safety or security issues – Policelink 131 444 or policelink.qld.gov.au
• Life-threatening emergencies – call 000
WIPES BLOCK PIPESMore than 145 million litres of sewage is produced across our city each day.
As thousands of visitors arrive on the Gold Coast for GC2018 this number will greatly increase. To ensure our network operates efficiently during this time, it is more important than ever to know – to flush, or not to flush?
Wet wipes, nappies and even toys are often flushed and can cause sewage overflows in your house, neighbourhood, creeks and waterways.
Our sewerage network is designed to transport sewage only. Only flush the three P’s – pee, poo and toilet paper. Everything else, including ‘flushable’ wet wipes must be placed in the bin.
By taking care of how you dispose of waste items, you can limit unnecessary damage to the sewerage network and the environment. cityofgoldcoast.com.au/thinkatthesink
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time.
For more information visit getsetforthegames.com/city -gold-coast-services or call us on 07 5667 5976.
Temporary closure of Merrimac Waste and Recycling Centre 2–15 April inclusiveDue to temporary games impacts, the Merrimac Waste and Recycling Centre (located at Boowaggan Road, Merrimac) will be closed from 2–15 April inclusive. During the temporary closure, we recommend residents utilise the Reedy Creek Waste and Recycling Centre, located at 61 Hutchinson St, Burleigh Heads. This centre is open 7am to 4.50pm daily, except Good Friday.
