Talk- ing about trends for furni- ture, fabrics and upholstery, Parushni Aggarwal, founder and creative director, Studio Creo, says, “To manage living spaces, look to transformable furniture. However, choosing a rug can be tricky; the right one can define a space, while the wrong one can make a room feel cluttered. But with so many styles, colours and materials to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you? The answer, fortunately, is easier than you think. Create balance While choosing a rug, the two primary factors to consider are your lifestyle and your personal style. Do you plan to place the rug in a high-traffic zone, such as a family room or hallway? Do you have young children or pets? If yes, you should choose a rug that’s easy to clean and durable, like cotton or synthetic. A patterned rug in darker tones will conceal stains which are common in high- activity areas. If you want a rug for decorative purposes, look to luxurious viscose, wool and leather rugs that are available in elaborate designs and rich colours. Recycled fabric rugs are great for the environmentally conscious soul. “If you prefer a softer feel, then look for natural fibres such as wool and cotton. Rugs made of synthetic fibres afford a deep, lush feel. Natural fibres such as jute can be surprisingly soft underfoot, but it’s not as warm as a woven rug. It is important to mix and match the textures and tones of your rug with your existing furniture,” shares Aditya Gupta, director, The Rug SPOTLIGHT TREND TALK Upholstery 101 PHOTOS COURTESY: IQRUP + RITZ AND CLARKE & CLARKE Just like fashion, trends in rugs and carpets too are ever evolving and resonate with living styles and market trends TRENDS MATTER room size to rug size ratio should be 2:3. “Give yourself some leeway to go bold with patterns. Mixing patterns within the same colour group will add depth to your décor. While selecting complementary colours to pair with your rug, select the non- dominant colour within the design. A brightly coloured or boldly patterned rug can be the right step if you want to lift up your space,” adds Gupta. The festive vibe For the impending festive celebrations, a lot of new textures and fresh colour palettes that are in sync with international design trends are coming into play. The designs aren’t limited to classics, but are suited to everyone’s tastes and include geometric patterns, plus the use of additional fabric to alter the nature of the rug. Ayush Choudhary, MD and creative director, Cocoon Fine Rugs, says, “To design a space in keeping with the festive season, natural materials such as wool, silk, jute and cotton in their various forms and combinations are in high demand. Handmade rugs have always been very eco-friendly, as they are generally made of natural materials and have an Indian appeal to them.” Hand-knotted rugs are ideal for Indian homes because we like to entertain friends and family during festivals. With the help of regular vacuuming, these are easier to maintain and are also washable. Colour talk Neutrals such as beige, grey and ivory along with the season’s trending accent colours such as blue, green, lilac and tangerine are ruling the interior landscape currently. These are easy to use in most modern settings as they go well with contemporary furniture pieces. “The trending colours in interiors continue to include blues (from navy to teal) and increasingly, more intense colours.” says Sebert. “If you have applied the colour-and-pattern principle, you might want to stick with a single colour, which complements your existing furnishings. If you want a patterned rug with multiple shades, place complementing furniture and accessories with it. Dark, rich colours help define a more intimate space, while lighter colours make a smaller space appear larger. Bright colours such as yellow or orange add warmth, while blues and greens create a calm ambience,” concludes Gupta. Republic. The key is to use the rug to create a balance instead of compete for attention in the overall décor. “If you plan to decorate any area, it is advisable to start from the floor up. Set the ambience and colour scheme by selecting the rug first. Ultimately, the rug or carpet should match your style. Finally, trust your instincts,” adds Gupta. The ideal rug It is advisable to design the room according to the rug, which means choose the rug first, and then design the room around it. This allows you to play around with the size of the rug; so one can use a single rug to cover the area of a room or smaller rugs to highlight different sections. Larger rugs tend to look grander, whereas smaller rugs offer their own aesthetic contribution to a room. Carol Sebert, president, Creative Matters, agrees, “We tend to look at the furniture arrangement rather than the room size. The carpet can help establish the flow of a room and can create an inviting area.” Angelique Dhama, spokesperson and chief marketing officer, Obeetee indicates that the ideal If you prefer a softer feel, then look for natural fibres such as wool and cotton. Rugs made of synthetic fibres afford a deep, lush feel. ‘‘ shades have made a come- back because of the elegance they exude.” This season, the design solutions are revolving around pastels and contrasts. Experts reveal that people are displaying an enthusiastic approach to organic and earthy shades. “Look at shades like turquoise, mud red, pink, green, yellow, olive, mustard and ochre. These hues can not only make a space appear larger and brighter, but also bring in energy and life,” says inte- rior designer Satviki Trivedi. Use it With access to technology, textiles have undergone a transformation. Moreover, it’s drawing inspiration from the environment as themes, motifs and textures reflect an earthier, more contempo- rary feel. The emphasis on comfort has seen homes em- brace fabric like never be- fore. From sofas and cush- ions to rugs and curtains, homeowners are happy to create a warm, welcoming mood. Trivedi says, “Linen, cotton, cotton blend, wool and silk fall under the cate- gory of natural fabrics. Linen is best suited for for- mal living rooms or adult ar- eas because it soils and wrinkles easily. Cotton is, of course, very popular. Wool is sturdy and durable, as wool and wool blends offer high resistance to pilling, fading, wrinkling and soil. Vinyl is easy to maintain and less ex- pensive than leather. Silk is a delicate fabric; only suit- able for adult areas, such as formal living rooms. There’s also velvet that manages to uplift a space and lends it an elegant touch.” So the trick really is to find a material that creates a harmonious blend of colour, theme, look, feel and comfort. Maintain it Upholstery is where majority of the dust/dirt gets collect- ed. It is therefore important to maintain it on a regular basis to retain the appearance of the fabric and to prolong its lifespan. Begin by choosing the right fabric that is appropri- ate to your lifestyle. The up- holstered piece can extend your furniture’s life. For ex- ample, synthetic fibres are a better choice for upholstered furniture that sits in areas of heavy usage. Synthetic fab- rics such as polyester, nylon and rayon are also easily available in the market. The next step is to protect the fabric. “Wash only after reading the manufacturer’s instructions as some materi- als can only be vacuumed. In case of any spills, attend to it immediately,” says interior designer Payal Mehra. The upholstery needs to be vacu- umed on a weekly basis to remove surface soil and pre- vent dirt from becoming em- bedded into the fibres. You can also use a soft bristled brush to gently whisk the dirt away without snagging the fabric. Without rubbing, gently blot any spills immediately with a clean folded towel. Lastly, avoid direct sunlight as it can damage your uphol- stery fabric, causing it to fade and even fray.
