Scoring Guide – Item 1Scoring Guide – Item 1

A 2-point response correctly concludes 3 things from the pie graph. OR lists 3 conclusions but one is vague or flawed. The response may include any of these statements (accept other reasonable interpretations from the graph):

Campers liked swimming the best. They liked canoeing and crafts equally.About 25 campers chose hiking as their favorite activity.Archery was the least favorite camping activity.

For example:About 25 people liked hiking best. More people like hiking than crafts. Thefavorite activity was swimming.

NOTE: The following terms or phrases are acceptable: Swimming the most. When describing the numerical proportions of the graph, the followingranges are acceptable:

Swimming 1/3 or 30-35%,Hiking 1/4 or 25%,Archery 1/10, 10%, or 8-12%,Crafts 15 or 13-17%,Canoeing 15 or 13-17%.

NOTE: If the response provides more than three conclusions all must be correctin order to earn full credit.

Scoring Guide – Item 1 cont.Scoring Guide – Item 1 cont.A 1-point response does one of the following:

• Provides 1 or 2 correct conclusions with 1 or 2 incorrect conclusions, from the pie graph

Or• Provides 1 correct conclusion with 2 vague conclusions, from the pie graph

Or• Provides 1 correct conclusion with 1 vague and 1 incorrect conclusion

Or• Provides 3 partially correct but vague conclusions, from the pie graph

NOTE: The following terms or phrases are considered flawed or vague: The most, not very much, some, not a lot, not that many, few, less kids.

A 0-point response shows little or no mathematical understanding of the concept by doing one of the following:

• Provides 2 vague conclusions with 1 incorrect or missing conclusion.Or

• Provides 1 vague conclusion with 2 incorrect or missing conclusions.NOTE: The following terms or phrases are considered incorrect: Mostly, most people liked swimming. Opinions concerning the activities are also not acceptable, (e.g. Swimming is the most fun of all the activities).
