cinematography and sound.

Who is superior? Who is inferior?

TIMED CONDITIONS

• January 2009 exam clip

The importance of note taking

• Examiners mark your notes!

• A. Making yourself take notes forces you to listen and watch more carefully and test your understanding of the clip

• B. When you are reviewing, notes guide you in writing a better and more detailed response

• C. Personal notes help you remember more and in your own way so it makes more sense

Page 7: 4. representation of age 2

How to take notes

• Use key words instead of full sentences

• Use abbreviations and symbols - but stay consistent

• Use anagrams to help you remember

• Make notes on as much as you can

• Break it down – don’t look for everything at once

P.E.E.

• Point – your comment about the area of representation e.g. Age is represented through cinematography.

• Evidence – your micro element that tells us this e.g. A low angle shot is used during the conversation with

character of the ‘listener’.

• Explain – link the two e.g. By framing the listener in this connotes to the

audience that the character is superior and wise, which conforms to a typical stereotype of an old middle aged man.

P.E.E.

• Point – your comment about the area of representation e.g. Furthermore, the shot distance in cinematography is

used to reinforce the Listener’s dominance.

• Evidence – your micro element that tells us this e.g. Nearing the end of the significant conversation the Listener moves

tightly into the frame creating an extreme close-up of his face.

• Explain – link the two e.g. This reinforces his dominance as an older, wiser

character and connotes to the audience the importance of his dialogue.

P.E.E.

• Point – your comment about the area of representation e.g. Age is represented through the use of diegetic

sound.

• Evidence – your micro element that tells us this e.g. The younger character appears intimidated when the

prison alarm sounds.

• Explain – link the two e.g. This conforms to a stereotypical view of young

person who is vulnerable in a hostile environment

SoundWas tackled well by some but too much focus on dialogue.

Clear distinction between diegetic and non-diegetic sound by some candidates.

Need to address use of music in more detail-tempo, pace, sound bridges and link specifically to representation.

CinematographyWell handled by most with the most confident use of terminology in this area.

Problems for some in just identifying camera shots/angle/position and not linking this to the construction of representation.

Weak Responses

Described the action rather than analysedFocused primarily on one area and neglect othersStray from the relevant question- discuss gender/social class etcWere concerned with TV Drama as genre rather than focus onrepresentationUse terminology rarely or inaccuratelyWrite a short response, intro and conclusion included

Strong Responses

Use note taking effectively and were well practiced in working under timed conditions.Understood the constructed nature of representation and were able to explore this through all four micro elementsUsed media terminology frequently. Selected the most relevant examples form the extract and analysed how the technical aspects constructed age.Could see the range of representations rather than ‘old’ and ‘young’Considered whether these representation were conformed to or subverted stereotypes
