INTRODUC T 0,1\T

This document contains the Danish_contribution'to the Third

European Survey of Educational Research, covering educational

.research completed or i progress during 1971-1972/

The collection of data was organized.by the Ministry of Education

who was also responsible.for the editing and translation o the

completed questionnaires.

-As the criteria for the research projects, as. laid down in the

CCC document 6Ks/Reeli (72),29, are open to some interpretation,

it.has been necessary for the Ministry to make a selection among

the answers from the researchers and institutes. Thus a number. of

investigations carried ou-Jbylocal school authorities have been

left out of the survey as they do not, .in editors' opinion, fulL,

fill the above :mentioned .creCeria, especially with regard to the. L

scale at which the research has been carried out.a

The institutions are listed alphabeticTly. Within each insti-,

tution the projects are listed alphabtticallY according tq the

name of the projeot leader. 7,

It is hoped that in future more precise criteria for data

collection will be availaLe in order to make internatioftal.

comparison easier.

Backgroundand aims:

Scope:

Methods:

The research is being carried out in three

fields: 1) the use of a developmental model

linking verbal and don-verbal aspects for

analysing language development; 2)1anguage

development described on linguistic princi-

ples in a broad cdgnitive context, also the4 role of language' in concept formation; 3)

the dependance of language development upon

the interaction of particular social circum-

stances.

Tile third-of the project irwolves the recor-

ding of the daily communication behavior 'of

3 children, aged lz - 3 years.

The above two partS are at present based on

literature, espeCially as it relates to a

thboretical analysis of language developmento

in the pre-school period.

Main'findings: The aim is to develop a closer relationship

between,educatIonal practice and the above

(Ascribed approach to language' development.

Time schedule: The project is still in progress. Provisional

reports are beingprepared.

The project is based on selected research

trends within developmental psychology,

learning psychology, and cognitive psycholo-

gy.Intellectual functions relevant to educa-

tional problems are described. An educational

model and a developmental model are instiu-

mental in an attempt to describe individual

differences in actionpatterns in various

learning and problem - solving situations in

a way which makeS possible pedagogical in-

tervention. The specific problems concern

'logical thinking' and fr'eading and comPen-

sation-mechanismslf.

Within the above mentioned project °a number

of investigations are being pursued. These

comprise normally 20-30 subjects, mainly

children between the ages of 6 and 14 years,

The teaching of the mothertongue takes place

partly in classes with about 26 pupils and

partly in devided classes (deletimer): of 13..

pupils. This gives possibilities of investi-

gation into the class size, efnct on the

individualization of instruction.

18 classes and 200 lessons were observed.

Clasproom observations of the lessons.. The

activities of.the pupils, the form of orga-

nisatiOn of the class and'the amount of.in-

diVidualization were, egistered at every

full minute. - In the statistical' analysis

the class size is regarded as an independent

variable, and pupil activity, the form of,

organization and the individUalization as

dependent variables.

The forM.of organization and the individua-

lization varies with the class aize.

The aim is to analyse some possible ways in

which fundamental topics- of,, physics might

be taught.

Different 'ways of presenting the topics in

existing textbooks are analysed and com-

pared..Up tb 1969 physics was taught in a v

very old-fashioned way in most countries.

Therefore it has been easy to suggest

new ways in which the teaching of physics

might beimprov'ed and modernized. Some-

times the development of new methods has

included construction of new equipment.

Often new ad,ternatives are developped

The organization of syllabuses at the Univer-
