Square shops FULLY LET for first time in 10 years

Coronation Square shopping is fully let for the first time in more than 10 years after four new tenants signed up for retail units adding to Farmfoods, Savers, BHF and Iceland. A health and beauty salon, an Eastern European supermarket, a national tanning chain and a senior care business have all agreed leases at Coronation Square. Biedronki.com, which already has shops in Tewkesbury and Gloucester, is to open a 1556 sq ft store at 4-5 Gresham Court after agreeing a 15-year lease with LCP, the national commercial property and investment company that manages the parade on behalf of Sheet Anchor Investments Ltd, part of the LCP group. Golden Spa has exchanged contracts for 44 Goldsmith Road, a 408 sq ft unit, and plans to convert it into a health and beauty salon, while an organisation that provides care services to older people has also signed a five-year lease for 92 Edinburgh Place. Rakesh Joshi, senior asset manager at LCP, said: “Since we took over just over 15 months ago, we’ve been working hard to refurbish the units to attract new tenants and have plans to carry out high level works to the external fabric and structure of the building and yards. “Now we have a full complement of tenants, local shoppers have a vibrant mix of retailers on their doorstep, from nationally known names to small, independent shops.”

More than 11,000 scientists from 153 countries including the UK have declared a climate emergency, warning of “untold suffering” without urgent action. The declaration is based on analysis of more than 40 years of publicly available data covering a range of measures from energy use to deforestation and carbon emissions. In a paper published in the journal Bioscience, the researchers set out indicators showing the impacts of humans on the climate. The paper describes “profoundly troubling” signs from activities including sustained increases in human populations, the amount of meat consumed per person, the number of air passengers carried and global tree cover loss, as well as carbon emissions and fossil fuel consumption. The scientists warn that despite 40 years of global climate negotiations, people have largely failed to address the problem of global warming. Now “the climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than most scientists expected”, they say. But there is hope, the researchers say, setting out areas where governments, businesses and the rest of humanity can take action to lessen the worst effects of climate change. These are:

• Replacing fossil fuels with low-carbon renewables and energy-saving

• Reducing short-lived climate pollutants ( methane, soot and HFCs)

• Restore natural carbon stores eg forests, grasslands, wetlands,

• Eating mostly plant-based foods and cut food waste;

• Shift from targeting GDP to sustaining ecosystems and

• Prioritising basic needs and reducing inequality;

• Stabilise, and “ideally gradually reduce”, the world population,

Dr Thomas Newsome, at the University of Sydney, said: “Scientists have a moral obligation to warn humanity of any great threat. From the data we have, it is clear we are facing a climate emergency.” He added:

“While things are bad, all is not hopeless. We can take steps to address the climate emergency.” Actions to address the climate emergency have been set out in a ‘carbon neutral Cheltenham’ report and a 2030 road map was endorsed by Cheltenham Borough Council on 14 October 2019.

The report and 2030 road map produced by environmental specialists DCA (De Courcy Alexander) make a number of recommendations that are designed to tackle climate change in Cheltenham. A number of major partnership initiatives are set out in the report, including the promotion of a zero carbon future. This will mean:

• developing local renewable energy,

• promoting carbon zero housing developments

• support for low income households to reduce energy costs

• a ‘net carbon positive’ council headquarters

• council’s policies and actions to be carbon neutral

• buying 100% renewable electricity

• developing a zero carbon sports and leisure experience

• upgrading the crematorium to a zero carbon operation

• solar powered storage and charging in council car parks

• council vehicles to become ‘net carbon positive’

• planting one million new trees.

In terms of activity, the report identifies a number of major initiatives, which include:

The Cheltenham Standard - Creating an identity that shows that activities in

Cheltenham are of necessity to a higher standard with a lower carbon impact, aligning with the Cheltenham marketing strategy. For example, to ensure that new developments are ‘net carbon positive’ with biodiverse green space, promoting zero-carbon emission transport and are architecturally in keeping with their historic townscape.

Cheltenham Green Deal - Creating a business case for an investment fund that

can be used within Cheltenham to help achieve the zero carbon target through individual, community, or collaborative action. For example, to provide low income households with a low-cost loan to update their home to become lower carbon, with repayments assisted by their reduced energy bills.

Cheltenham Energy - Cheltenham already has about 20 Megawatts (MW) of

installed renewable capacity. Cheltenham Energy would be enable the Council, businesses and residents to purchase zero-carbon energy, primarily from local sources.

Onyx Vocal Harmony Band Onyx Vocal Harmony Band (AKA Onyx) is an all-female group of talented local

musicians, the majority of whom reside in West Cheltenham. They play music from a

variety of musical genres, including pop, rock, jazz and country, and have been playing

music together across Gloucestershire for a number of years.

The group was formed in 2012 by Robyn James, who had the vision and passion to

create an all-female band with blended harmonies and a diverse range of music that

would appeal to people of all ages. So far they have performed at festivals, weddings,

craft evenings and a variety of charity events, and always have positive comments and

feedback from the organisers, due to their adaptability and many musical talents.

Regarding these talents, the group is made up of Robyn (lead vocals, electric, bass and

acoustic guitar), Sue (piano, ukulele, guitar, backing vocals), Vix (bass guitar,

percussion and backing vocals) and Kerry (drums, percussion and occasional acoustic

guitar). Whilst they are clearly super-talented, they do not play all of these instruments

at the same time!

The group have played in garden centres – to audiences of watering cans and compost

bins, on football and rugby pitches and in spaces smaller than a broom cupboard – each

gig is always different.

In their spare time, the girls are Prosecco and cheesecake loving folk, who spend time

discussing their eclectic music and food tastes. Rehearsals usually consist of much

discussion and food sharing, with some music thrown in.

If you would like to hear them in action, have a listen to their YouTube link… Onyx Vocal

Harmony Band, or alternately, see them in person at Winter Wonderland at the

Springbank Community Centre on 11th December. (See page 12 for details)

Reclaim furniture re-use scheme based at Unit 25b Lansdown Industrial Estate is looking for mid-week volunteers to join the team and help our drivers to deliver and collect used furniture. It is a great way to learn new skills and to meet people.

If you can offer a day or two per week, we will be able to kit you out with protective clothing and provide the health and safety training to do the

job. Over the last year, six of our volunteers have moved on to paid employment. So, volunteering with Reclaim can help you to pick up those vital interpersonal and vocational skills that employers are looking for and your time with us can help fill a gap on your CV. We provide the safety boots, clothing and a hopefully good experience.

Our store is open to the public Monday-Saturday from 9:30-4:30 and it sells all sorts of household goods. Why not pop around and have a chat to us about volunteering and perhaps you may also spot a bargain for your home at the same time. Alternatively, you can call 01242 228823 and ask for Brian or Dave.

Help prevent burglary happening to you It’s estimated that in the UK, there’s a burglary every 40 seconds. It’s traumatic to lose valuable and personally important items from your home – and the emotional shock of having your property invaded can also be deeply upsetting. Partnership with Age UK Gloucestershire

Age UK Gloucestershire has become a Crimestoppers Charity Ambassador, to help fight the crime, which can often target older and more vulnerable people. To mark the collaboration, Age UK Gloucestershire’s ‘Ageing Well’ group performed their “scam awareness presentation” to a group in Cheltenham. The new doorstep `fraud aware’ leaflets and stickers were produced by both charities to hand-out to older people, reminding them to:

• Lock their back doors properly

• Stop and ask who’s at the door and to say no if goods or a service is not wanted

• Chain their door before it is opened, to be on guard.

These stickers and leaflets will be available at the Age UK Gloucestershire office and at the Ageing Well Performances.

“Doorstep criminals and fraudsters in general can be very convincing and cunning, so we are delighted that Age UK Gloucestershire is joining with us to help keep older people safe. We encourage the more vulnerable to speak to a trusted relative or friend before agreeing to a service or before handing over any money to a cold caller. If anyone has information on fraudulent activity, it can be passed to Crimestoppers 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111, or online by completing an untraceable form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org at any time.” Emily van der Lely, charity Crimestoppers Regional Manager for Gloucestershire.

The third annual Cheltenham Paint Festival (CPF) took place in September 2019 and would not have been possible with the support of all the stakeholders, including sponsors, artists, people who gave permission , the media who covered the work and many volunteers. CPF thank everyone for the role they played.

Here is only some of what was achieved; around 130 artists from around the world painted murals and street

art at authorised sited in the town including around 15 permanent pieces and 40 on the theme 'Hurrah for books' celebrating 70 years of Cheltenham Literature Festival. The competition to find the best piece on the theme was won by Sam Art's amazing photo of JK Rowling .

CPF started the transformation of Princess Elizabeth Way into a world class outdoor art gallery called The ARTery which will change perceptions of the area for both local residents and those driving through the area. The two pieces painted this year (by DANK and Inkie) have already generated a huge amount of positive feedback and enthusiasm to see The ARTery completed.

One artist was delayed in attending the festival and painted our key headline piece in October. Visitors leaving the railway station by Gloucester Road are now greeted by an amazing optical illusion on the side of The Midland Hotel painted by the international artist WD Street Art .

Cheltenham Paint Festival have now delivered over 50 permanent pieces of public art in a range of styles across the town so that everyone can find a piece of art they enjoy.

The festival was mentioned on the Graham Norton show - although mistakenly placed it in Gloucester rather than Cheltenham!

This year the event expanded to include films and talks, an online art shop, and two exhibitions (one in association with Chapel Arts Gallery and the other a pop up shop). There were spray paint workshops for 120 people and were delighted to be able to offer 30 free spaces to low income families and 20 free supported spaces those with physical or mentally difficulties due to targeted funding from sponsors.

An All Saints’ Academy A Level student took her passion for fashion photography to Milan when she completed a work experience assignment with a professional team.

Marcelina Podolska, 17, who studies Photography, Psychology and Art, worked with renowned fashion photographer Sara El Beshbichi throughout Milano Fashion Week. Marcelina was assigned the planning of two photo shoots with the help of hair and make-up artist Claudia Ricci, stylist Andrew Seghesio and models from the 26 Milano Agency.

Shooting in the photography studios in the Instituto Italiano di Fotografia, Sara guided Marcelina through the editing process and gave her invaluable tips on how to achieve photos at a professional standard.

Reflecting on the training she received, Marcelina commented “This was a really beneficial hands-on experience that gave me a clear insight into working in the fashion photography and creative directing industry. I gained a lot of knowledge from this, especially how to communicate my ideas with a team of professionals and direct a photography production.”

Although Marcelina has always shown a keen interest in photography, she first thought about pursuing it as a career after taking part in a school project in Year 10, during which she worked with the ASHA brand and marketing agency in Cheltenham on an art project. The work Marcelina produced during this

assignment was showcased in a London gallery and even published in an arts book.

Whilst studying for her GCSEs, she became particularly interested in fashion photography which inspired her to study an A Level in the subject. Marcelina is hoping to further her studies next year at University of Arts London, where she has applied to study Fashion Photography.

Determined to make her mark in the industry, Marcelina said “I know the field is incredibly competitive so getting work experience is vital to making sure I stand out to employers and improve my skills.”

All Saints’ Academy Photography Teacher Mr Chilman added ‘Marcelina is an outstanding student and a brilliant photographer who has a clear idea of what she wants to communicate through her photography. She has grown from strength to strength throughout the course, with her best work yet to come. This work experience in Milan has provided her with the inspiration and opportunity to shine and I look forward to seeing her succeed in the fashion industry in years to come.’

Specialists in family law

DS Legal is an experienced, highly regarded forward-looking law practice, specialising in family law. We are committed to offering a first-class service and we pride ourselves on our no-nonsense and practical approach.

We provide clear and effective advice, whilst at the same time understanding just how difficult family breakdowns can be. We offer our clients professional and informed advice at every step.

Domestic abuse

Domestic abuse isn’t just about violent behaviour, victims can also experience verbal abuse and feel intimidated and controlled. In fact, the definition of domestic violence has recently been updated to include reference to emotional abuse.

If you are a parent, you won’t be the only victim – your children will have to live through the abuse with you. When there are children in the household, they witness the violence that is occurring, and in eighty per cent of cases, they are in the same or the next room. In about half of all domestic violence situations, the children are also being directly abused themselves.

Costs and Legal Aid

If you are a victim of abuse, whether it is physical, emotional, psychological or financial you may be eligible for legal aid. We can make a quick assessment and if appropriate ensure that you get the protection you need when you need it including whether you are eligible for legal aid. If you own your own home or have additional assets we will advise on whether the statutory charge is likely to come into effect and provide you with an estimate of what that charge may be. Alternatively, we will endeavour to provide you with a fixed fee, so that you do not have to worry about ongoing legal costs.

Can we help you?

If you would like to get in touch with us to find out how we can help you, please call Mark or alternatively, please email us at [email protected]. We work in the strictest confidence and we are here to help you.

Hesters Way Forum Coffee and Cake Meetings

From 20th November the Hesters Way Forum in partnership with the Hesters Way Community Fund will be running community coffee mornings every Wednesday at JTs Café in the Hesters Way Community Centre.

There are some exciting developments planned for West Cheltenham in the next few years not least proposals for Cheltenham Borough Homes properties and the new Cyber Hub. Plans for the new high-tech office development are well under way and the a location has been earmarked for the fields to the west of Fiddlers Green Lane.

These informal get togethers provide a great opportunity for local people to find out more about what’s planned and how it could affect Hesters Way and wider west Cheltenham. There will be an opportunity to study the latest proposals and to hear what local people have already said about how to improve the local neighbourhood.

This is the place for you to campaign for a better Hesters Way.

Interested? Just pop in to JTs and order a coffee on us!

Please contact Hope Thornton if you have any questions, ideas, or want to get involved with the steering group.

Let us introduce ourselves, we are Kitty & Claire, Community Organisers for the Cheltenham West area. Community Organisers reach out, listen to residents and bring them together based on what they love and their concerns in their community, connecting people with shared passions and project ideas.

It would be great to meet you and listen to your thoughts about the community you live in so feel free to contact either of us by text, telephone or email, we’d love to hear from you!

Since July, we have been busy door knocking to meet people just like you, local folk who live and work in Cheltenham West. We have heard lots of interesting opinions and some refreshing and exciting ideas.

You would like to see more summer fairs, more education about littering, cleaning it up and more bins, you’d like to bring back road sweepers, introduce tall recycling wheelie bins (better for the elderly) You would love to keep and improve the existing green spaces, plant more trees and stop cutting down old ones. More family events would be great! And there is a even petition for GCHQ staff parking improvements which was started by a local lady, (contact us if you would like to sign it and haven’t yet).

There has been an interest in re-forming neighbourhood watch groups, and we can support you to do if you are interested? People say they would like to get to know their neighbours, have you any ideas about how to make this happen? Someone suggested baking a cake to share in their cul-de-sac and another wants to organise a litter pick.

There is a peer support and action group that has formed in Monkscroft, MAG, where residents felt the need to get together regularly to make things happen in their community, and have made new friends and set the ball rolling on interesting projects to improve their neighbourhood.
