ISO 14001-2004 4.3.1Environmental Aspects

The Organization shall establish, implement and maintain a procedure(s)

To identify the environmental aspects of it’s activities,products and services within the defined scope of the environmental management system that it can control and those it can influence taking into account planned new developments or new or modified activities,products and services, and

To determine those aspects that have or can have significant impact(s) on the environment (i.e.significant environmental aspects)

The organization shall document this information and keep it up to date

The organization shall ensure that the significant environmental aspects are taken into account in establishing, implementing and maintaining its environmental management system

An Aspect and Impact Analysis StandardOperating Procedure had been writtenduring the implementation of theWastewater Treatment Division’s EMS

It had to be revised to include the WaterSupply and Treatment Division (WSTD)

In order to prevent pollution, we have tolook closely at our day-to-day activities tosee what pollution we are causing, ormight be causing

The Aspect and Impact Analysis is just aformalized way of doing this

The A & I SOP tells us how to do it

Identify Aspects

ISO 14001-2004 definition of aspects:

Element of an organization’s activities or products or services that can interact with the environment

Environment being defined as:

Surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interaction



Our Method of Identifying Aspects

The mission of the Water Supply andTreatment Division is to provide safe,clean and reliable drinking water to ourcustomers

So it seemed logical to use the linearnature of the water treatment process asa template for identifying aspects

Ranking Considerations

How the aspect fitted in to the “grand

scheme of things”. There was alwaysthe potential to over rate

Example: Delivery of Lab Chemicals

Shipments contained hazardous acids

But acids were in small quantities anddeliveries were infrequent

Overall – Low Impact



Ranking Considerations

“Worst case scenario” – within reason Example: Delivery of Diesel Fuel

Worst case: Entire tanker of diesel spills onWater Plant grounds

Quantities are larger and deliveries morefrequent

Overall – Moderate Impact

4 – Very Effectively Controlled: Potentialimpact is highly unlikely to occur due toprograms, processes or procedures inplace

3 – Moderately Controlled: Controlsubstantially reduces the potential of impact occurrences through programs,processes or activities

2 – Slight Control: Control mechanismscan help limit the potential for impact orreduce the frequency or severity of impact

1 – Uncontrolled: High probability existsfor potential impact

0 – N/A: Not applicable at this time



Calculate Control Score



Calculate Total ScoreControl Total – Impact Total = Final Score



Determine Significant Aspects

Those aspects with a total score of 0 orless are considered to be significant

Do a “reality check”

Is Administrative Activities really as

significant as the Use of Chlorine? Use best professional judgment
