Parish Events
Dear Saint Edward Parish Family:
In�our�first�reading�this�weekend�we�encounter�Elijah�the�prophet�(Elijah�the�Tishbite)�on�Mount�Horeb.��Mountains�are�often�places�of�encounter�with�God�in�the�Sacred�Scriptures.��It�wasn’t�by�some�mighty�or�miraculous�act�on�the�mountain�that�God�revealed�Himself�to�Elijah,�but�by�a�“tiny�whispering�sound.”
Elijah�is�a�central�figure�in�the�Old�Testament.�� There�is�not�in�the�Hebrew�Scriptures�a�“Book�of�the�Prophet�Elijah,” rather�his�life�is�chronicled�in�the�Books�of�First�and�Second�Kings.�(He�is�not,�therefore�listed�as�a�“Major�Prophet,” due����to�the�lack�of�his�own�writings,�but�he�is�absolutely�a�MAJOR�Prophet�in�the�sense�of�his�importance�in�God’s�plan).
He�lived�in�the�Northern�Kingdom�of�Israel�during�the�reign�of�King�Ahab�in�the�9th�Century�B.C.��He�was�among�the�few�survivors�of�the�persecution�of� prophets�by�King�Ahab�and�his�wife�Jezebel�after�they�had�introduced�worship�of�the�false�Canaanite�god,�Baal.��Dressing�in�rough�camel�hair�(sound�like�anyone�else?)�and�fed�by�ravens�during�drought/famine,�he�survived�in�the�desert�until�eventually�impelled�by�God�to�confront�King�Ahab,�and�challenge�the�prophets�of�Baal�to�a�test�of�power�on�Mount�Carmel,�in�which�Elijah�triumphed.
God�performed�many�miracles�for�and�through�Elijah,�including�ravens�providing�Elijah�with�food�during�the�famine,�Elijah’s�miraculous�provision�of�the�unending��supply�of�oil�and�flour�during�the�time�of�famine�to�the�Widow�of�Zarephath�and�her�son�-�the�son�who�would�eventually�die�and�that�Elijah�would�successfully�“restore�to�life” through�his�prayers�to�God�-�the�first�instance�of�the�dead�being�raised�recorded�in�scripture.���
Elijah�would�again�confront�King�Ahab�after�Ahab�(through�the�scheming�of�his�wife�Jezebel)�had�acquired�possession�of�a�vineyard�by�murder.��In�the� scriptures,�Elijah�is�not�recorded�as�dying.��Rather�he�was�“taken�up�to�-�or� assumed�into�-�heaven” in�a�whirlwind�by�a�chariot�and�horses�of�fire.��(So�we�see�that�while�Mary’s�Assumption�into�heaven�is�not�recorded�in�Sacred� Scripture,�there�is�biblical�precedent�for�such�an�event�taking�place).
The�final�mention�of�Elijah�in�the�Old�Testament�is�in�the�Book�of�the�Prophet�Malachi�-�the�final�book�of�the�Septuagint�(Catholic�Old�Testament).���“Lo,�I������will�send�you�the�prophet�Elijah�before�the�great�and�terrible�day�of�the�Lord�
comes.” In�Christianity,�it�is�traditionally�believed�that�Elijah’s�appearance�during�the�Transfiguration�of�Jesus�to�Peter,�James�and�John�fulfilled�this�prophecy. � In�Matthew’s�Gospel,�Jesus�identifies�John�the�Bap-tist�as�the�spiritual�successor�of�Elijah:�“and�if�you�are�willing�to�accept�it,�he�is�Elijah�who�is�to�come.”

Camina Jesus sobre las aguas y sus ami-gos piensan con terror que es un fantasma. Conocían de sobra el poder taumatúrgico de Jesus; pero a nadie se le ocurre que aquella figura pudiera ser, en carne y hueso, el Maestro que acababa de multiplicar los panes y los peces. No creen en Jesus pero están convencidos de que aquello es ¡un fantasma! No creemos en el Dios vivo y cerca-no, real y omnipotente,
pero nos afirmamos en creer en fantasmas, visiones, tarots, espiritis-tas...Creer en Dios es más racional, más serio y consecuente que creer en hechizos y videntes.
Décimonovena Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
Introducción a la Liturgia del Dia— Agosto es un mes muy mariano, casi tanto como Mayo u Octubre. La fiesta de la Asunción de Nstra.Sra. es central y alrededor de ella, o coincidiendo con el mismo día, hay innumerables advocaciones marianas populares que sirven de motive de verbenas, romerías y peregrinaciones de verano. En el fondo de la fiesta de la Asunción está el misterio central del cristianismo: la convicción del triunfo de Crsito sobre el mal y la muerte y la esperanza de nuestra propia resurrección. Así que los bailes, verbenas y fiestas callejeras son el realidad fiestas pascuales. No se ocurre celebrar la Virgen de Guadalupe en Agosto, y sin embargo, es asombroso el parecido de la descripción de la visión de San Juan en el Apocalipsis de “una mujer vestida de sol, y con la luna bajo sus pies; sobre la cabeza una corona de doce estrellas,” que se lee en la fiesta de la Asunción, con la imagen de Nstra.Sra. de Guadalupe. Se trata de una mujer embarazada cuyo fruto aguarda el maligno...y de ahí se pasa a la visión de una tierra nueva y un cielo nuevo. Es triunfo anunciado y a la vez desafío a la misión de los cristianos en el mundo: dar a luz un mundo mejor a pesar de las amenazas de muerte que nos rodean.
Oremos Señor Jesus, que conoces nuestros miedos
y nuestra poca fe, ayudanos a superar el viento que nos atemoriza y a reconocer
tu divina grandeza y tu humana cercanía. Amen

“Senor, si eres tu, manda que yo vaya a ti caminando sobre el agua.”
El Evangelio para la Misa de hoy nos invita a lanzarnos
hacia el futuro confiando en la protección del Señor.
Jesus invitó a Pedro a caminar hacia Él sobre el agua. Así
sucede muchas veces en nuestra vida y ahora en la vida
de nuestra parroquia. El Señor nos invita a caminar hacia
delante, confiando en Su ayuda. De hecho, se puede
pronosticar que el Señor nos invitará constantemente a
caminar hacia el futuro, sin saber lo que nos espera, solo
con el conocimiento que Él nos guiará.
Pedro, sin embargo, dudó, y por eso comenzó a
hundirse en el agua. Nuestra fe, como la de Pedro,
también flaquea a veces, y sentimos la necesidad de
gritar: “¡Sálvame, Senor!” Y el Senor extiende la mano
para levantarnos de nuevo, y nos ofrece renovada
fortaleza y confianza para continuar la peregrinación
hacia la casa de nuestro Padre celestial.
Mientras esperamos la fiesta de la Asunción el próximo
sabado, acude a mi mente uno de los hermosos títulus de
Maria de un antiguo cántico litúrgico. Maria es invocada
como “la Estrella del Mar.” Cuando entra la duda en
nuestra vida, y nos sentimos tentados por la nube del
desaliento, acudamos a la estrella, la Madre de Dios. Ella
pide por nosotros, y nos recuerda que su Hijo está siem-
pre con nosotros hasta el fin del mundo. Padre Francisco
Heroes de la fe—11 de Agosto Santa Clara. Nacida en 1193 en
Asís, Italia, Santa Clara, inspirada por la visión de Francisco de Asís,
fundó con otras jovenes la Congregación de las Franciscanas, cono-
cidas luego como Clarisas. En una oportunidad Santa Clara salvó a la
ciudad de Asís de ser saqueada por los Sarracenos, mostrándoles a
los sitiadores una Custodia con la hostia consagrada; de ahí que se la
representa con una Custodia en las manos. Murió el 11 de Agosto de
1253. El papa Alejandro IV en 1255, a sólo dos años de su muerte, la
proclamó santa.
14 de Agosto San Maximiliano Maria Kolbe. Nació en Polonia, de
padres muy pobres. Ingresó en la orden franciscana y fue ordenado
sacerdote. Publicó una valiente revista, que llegó a tener un tiraje de
millones de ejemplares. El 17 de febrero de 1941 la policía nazi con-
dujo al P.Kolbe al campo de concentración de Auschwitz. Un día es-
capó u preso y los nazis quisieron hacer un escarmiento. El P.Kolbe
ofreció su vida por la de un compatriota. Murió en un calabozo,
alabando al Señor entre cánticos y consumido por el hambre
(1894-1941)

Hi�Friends, In�getting�ready�for�this�email�I�looked�over�at�a�little� calendar�I�have�next�to�my�computer.�While�it�has�the�typical�holidays�on�it,�it�also�has�a�bunch�of�Feast�Days�and�Holy�Days�of�Obligation.�As�I�was�looking�through�the�saints�who�celebrate�their�feast�days�over�the�next�few�weeks,�I�noticed�that�three�founders�of�the�major�religious�orders�were�on�the�calendar.�July�31�was�the�feast�day�of�St.�Ignatius,�founder�of�the�Jesuits.�This�Saturday,�August�8,�we�celebrate�the�feast�of�St.�Dominic,�founder�of�the�Dominicans.�And�(ok,�so�this�might�be�a�few�months�away),�on�October�4,�we�celebrate�St.�Francis,�founder�of�the�Franciscans.�Though�they�lived�during�different�times�and�places,�their�stories�are�familiar. St.�Ignatius�dreamed�of�fame�and�glory�that�came�from�being�a�knight.�He�went�off�to�battle,�where�he�was�injured.�He�had�to�do�something�while�recuperating,�and�started�reading�about�the�life�of�Christ�and�the�saints.�He�went�on�pilgrimages,�and�soon�started�to�devote�his�life�to�God.�Soon�he�combined�his�love�of�military�structure�and�his�love�for�Christ�as�he�founded�the�Society�of�Jesus,�more�commonly�known�today�as�the�Jesuits.�To�be�a�solider�for�Christ,�Ignatius�believed�one�must�be�regimented�in�their�spiritual�practices�and�educated.�Part�of�the� formation�of�the�Jesuits�is�practicing�the�Spiritual�Exercises,�a�collection�of�prayers,�reflections,�and�meditations�designed�to�help�one�discern�God's�calling�in�their�lives. One�of�Ignatius'�role�models�was�St.�Francis�of�Assisi,�who,�a�few� hundred�years�before,�had�also�dreamed�of�being�a�knight.�But�during�a�battle,�he�was�captured.�Francis�wasn't�a�very�good�knight.�He�actually�felt�like�he�wasn't�a�very�good�anything.�He�didn't�want�to�be�a�merchant�like�his�father.�He�failed�at�his�dream�of�being�a�knight.�He�didn't�know�what�to�do.�In�despair,�he�went�to�a�small�church�and�asked�God�to�tell�him�what�he�ought�to�do�Francis�heard�a�voice�say,�"Go�rebuild�my�Church�for�which�you�see�is�falling�down."�Francis�took�that�literally�and�started�to�physically�build�up�the�church�building.�He�begged�for�supplies�and�when�he�didn't�have�any,�stole�his�father's�inventory�of�cloth�and�sold�it.�Soon�he�began�talking�to�other�people�about�the�life�of�Christ�and�found�his�joy�in�living�the�Gospel. Around�the�same�time�as�St.�Francis,�St.�Dominic�was�experiencing�something�very�similar.�As�a�young�man�from�a�wealthy�family,�Dominic�would�often�sell�his�possessions�of�rich�clothes�and�expensive�books�to�give�the�money�to�the�poor�people�he�saw�in�the�streets,�feeling�like�he�had�no�right�to�them�if�the�poor�had�nothing.�As�a�young�religious,� Dominic�saw�that�there�was�a�need�for�a�new�way�of�addressing�the�spiritual�needs�of�people�in�the�growing�cities.�Dominic's�new�order,�the�Order�of�Preachers,�were�formed�to�continue�the�need�for�well�educated�faith�and�education�formation,�but�was�flexible�enough�to�meet�the�needs�of�the�people.�Dominicans�were�trained�to�preach�in�the�language�of�the�people�and�to�engage.
