The Killing: Series (Re)ViewAmerican MovieClassics (AMC) hastraditionally been the littlebrother of Turner Classic Movies(TCM) for quite some time. Wellnot anymore, or should I say notso in the past few years. With anarray of shows like Mad Men,Breaking Bad and The Walking

Dead, AMC is now a darling of theNielsen Ratings and an Emmy-hoarding machine. In the list ofthese illustrious programmes isThe Killing.

Based on the Danish crime seriesForbrydelsen (The Crime), itdwells into the same Nordic noirgenre as the hugely popular"Millennium Series" novels ofSteig Larsson (personally I think

the Larsson surname is a tributeto him in both the English andDanish versions). Set in thebackdrop of the damp Seattleweather, it gives a perfectsetting to the show which is about

a single death having tainted anentire city, from the corridors ofpower to the hallways of the localhigh school.

The 13 episode series starts withchronicling the last day of aretiring homicide detective SarahLinden (Mireille Enos of Big Lovefame, the polar opposite of thenetwork television sexy scientistheroine) who gets (You just canthelp but draw comparisons to "Twin

    Peaks"). Watch to know more.

The Killing is very rooted inrealism. Not only is detectiveLinden realistically portrayed as

an over dedicated cop bu Enos, shes much understated. Fromcharacters and the visualatmosphere of the show to the lackof gun fights and car chases, TheKilling has an eerie feel to it

that is consistent throughout. Many characters also get thechance to develop and this is whatsets The Killing apart. We seeRosies mother and father sufferthrough the media implications, the constant to-and-fro of murdersuspects and also suffering theloss of a child.

The Killing is played out overtime rather than the typical UScrime dramas that lean towardsbeing purely episodic. Theressomething more appealing with this

format as the characterdevelopment has more semblance oftruth, perhaps because it demandsmore of your time and attention(maybe thats why I like Mad Men,Sopranos, Twin Peaks etc so much).

Anyhow, its something which ishighly recommended.

and S.Y.S were together overthe issue and a long discussion with DDAended with not only firm promise toresolve the issue but by a small McDtreat for fuchhas! .

But the day was not yet off when aquarrel occurred at about 2:00pm withthe Junior Executive, Electrical Dept. T hestudents gathered again at S.E.E office and he promised to install the generatorby the night. T he entire Electrical Staff remained in the hostel till 9:00pm andthe generator was installed and it seemed the administration felt theardour of students (perhaps first timeafter YFE 2006). On 18 th of May , weagain had a meeting with DDA whoagain sent us back to M r. B S Anand whofinally approved our proposal todivert the power supply fromthe dental deptt . Which would befunctional within a couple of days.

After all, our efforts fructified and thegenerators were installed on 19 th andthe cables were bought and are being

laid down . Really a breath of fresh andcool air...!!! We are even installing Solarpanels at our hostels for heating waterduring the winters.

In addition to this 70kw line, M r. Anandalso proposed that a 400kw line can bediverted from Gautam Nagar if AII M Sadmn works with ND M C. T hough it looks much like a task but wherethere is a will, there is a way... I certainly realised that.

So, if things go on smoothly, Hostel No.1-6 will be supplied by 5 cablesand one generator....and the

electricity crisis will resolve forever.Let s hope that this effort may turnsuccessful and we may be relieved of ourelectricity woes for this and theforthcoming summers.

    Gents Hostel Secretary

Present status of Electricity in AII MS:

1 . Total 3 cable lines are functional:

Hostel No.1 and 6 by one Cable

Hostel No. 2 and 3 by second Cable

Hostel No.4 and 5 by third Cable.(Dental Line)

    2. Two cables from ND M C one 77kV line and other from Gautam Nagar arestill non-functional.

3 . The NDM C officials including M r. Amit (Assistant Engineer,ND M C) seemed helpless in locating the fault of line fromGautam Nagar even after a futiledigging for the fault between Hostel No.7 & 8.But as they promise, they arestill on............

4 . The NDM C has allowed AII M S Electrical Dept. to place a cable parallel to the 77kV, the work of which hasalready started as evident near basketball court and hopefully, it will be functional by the end of this month.
