Positive Education

At the end of last term staff participated in an excellent professionally learning session around Positive education and how retraining our minds to be more positive can improve our own wellbeing as well as that of the students in our care

A key takeaway message is consider asking our children and partners “What went well today?” rather than “How was your day?” as it encourages us to focus on the great things in a day as to the negative things that tend to weigh us down. Food for thought?

ANZAC DAY 2021

With COVID restrictions eased it was wonderful to return to Tarragal Glenn to participate in their ANZAC service. I was very proud to accompany our students our School Captains Joe Vaynman and Tahlia Smith who delivered a moving speech of what ANZAC day means to them which was very well received by the residents at Tarragal Glenn.

Our Vice Captains Sam Vaynman and Catherine Boyak represented EHS at the Gosford ANZAC march laying a wreath on our behalf. I very much appreciate our students being willing to represent their school at such a significant Australian event where we remember the many service men and women that paid the ultimate sacrifice to make our world a better place.

On Monday morning April 26 EHS commemorated ANZAC day with Mr Joyce and 2 of our student leaders India –Rose Barnett and Baylee LeBretonlead a very moving ceremony with our special guest Major Helmy Souvannavong from the Australian Defence force. Thank you to Owen Smithson, Josh Halliday and Mitch Frith for laying a wreath on our behalf. All students were exceptional demonstrating the utmost respect and courtesy during the assembly.

2021-2024 School Improvement Plan

The new school plan has been finalised and published on our website with the strategic directions and purpose as listed. The plan has greater detail in terms of the strategies to achieve each direction and how we will measure our success.

In July, this year EHS will be externally validated to provide assurance that the school and system are making progress towards excellence as aligned to the Department of Education’s School Excellence Framework.

Having a strong School Improvement Plan in place is important to ensure we are working towards ensuring EHS delivers a high quality learning experience for all students to enable them to connect, thrive and succeed.

English

In English we are excited to be back for Term Two.

All the students are working very hard and have

made a great start to the term.

Year 7-10 are working through analysing various

films and the themes and issues represented in

these. They have been given the opportunity to

relate this to contemporary issues and extend their

ideas on a global scale. They have the opportunity

to represent their ideas through a discursive piece of

writing for assessment. All assessment tasks will be

completed in class at the end of Week 3 and we

hope that all students are revising and preparing to

achieve their personal best in their assessment.

Year 11 Advanced English has entered the world of

Speculative Fiction, whilst Year 11 Standard English

is studying ‘A Study in Scarlett’ which is focusing on

Crime Fiction. English studies are exploring ‘Playing

the Game’ and how English is represented through

sport.

Year 12 is exploring ‘The Craft of Writing’ in

Advanced and Standard English and English

Studies is focusing on texts that involve journeys

and adventures through the module ‘On the Road’.

Miss Kronja is looking forward to taking 8E to the

Sydney Writers Festival on Monday 3rd May in

Sydney where the students will have the

opportunity to listen to authors speak and be

inspired. Also she will coaching the junior and

senior debating teams who have competitions

over the next few weeks

We love seeing our students read and encourage

all students to bring books to school that they have

a personal interest in for Roll Call and to read at

the beginning of every class.

This will open up their imaginations and extend

their vocabulary. As Dr Seuss says

“The more that you read, the more things you

will know. The more that you learn, the more

places you’ll go.”

We wish all our students all the best in their

assessment tasks next week.

Students who attend Impact Gym or AnytimeFitness Erina are also required to bring a towelfor hygiene purposes at the gym and a drinkbottle is also recommended.

Mr Whitmore

School Sport

Each Tuesday afternoon students in Years 9

and 10 participate in various activities for

school sport which not only provides a

wonderful physical and social outlet but also

contributes to achieving their RoSA (Record of

School Achievement).

Students have been able to select from a

number of sport options in Term 2 and we

would like to thank the following venues in our

EHS community for hosting our students each

week; Impact Gym, Anytime Fitness Erina, 5

Star Swim School Erina, Erina Tennis Club

(Karalta Rd) and Erina Ice Arena.

Unfortunately the Open Girls Knock Out Netball

team suffered a loss to Gosford High School last

week. Although we did not win the game, as always

EHS's positive attitude and determination shone

through! Good luck to Gosford High in the next

round.

Congratulations to Eva Faunce, Ciarn Spalding and Bree

Spalding who competed in the CHS Swimming

Championships earlier this term. They all swum

outstanding we are proud to report that Bree Spalding

won a silver medal in the 14 years girls 100m Backstroke.

Congratulations on your efforts girls we are very proud of

you.

Our Open Boys Soccer team played Wadalba

H.S. and after being level at 1-1 with less than

ten minutes to go, we conceded two goals to

lose 3-1.

The commitment that the whole squad have

shown to the cause has been outstanding, with

regular training to which they have given 100% in

both attitude and application. While the result

didn't go our way, I am immensely proud of the

work they have put in to reach the standard they

have in playing some very good football.

The under 15 girls Netball team had a

fantastic game against Gosford high school

winning 33-7.

Excellent shooting from Aliyah Hussain and

Hallie Moreau saw us get out to an early lead

in the first quarter.

We continued to extend our lead throughout

the game and always looked comfortable with

centre court layers Beau Self, Jasmin Piggott

and Heidi Annabell feeding the goal circle with

accurate passing.

Our defence was solid all game and kept our

opposition at bay with amazing intercepts and

rebounds from Ebony Nash, Zoe Blades and

Keira Piggot.

A great team effort. Well done girls.

Page 10: 4 May 6 May 10 May 14 May - Home - Erina High School

Congratulations to Lewis and Cooper Gifford-Cock

who recently represented Sydney North in the

Open Boys CHS Championships.

After some dominant pool round matches, the

boys faced off against a very tough Hunter team

who took them all the way into a penalty shootout.

Luckily the Sydney North Team was able to clinch

the match and face off against the South Coast in

the Gold Medal Match.

Unfortunately South Coast proved to be too strong

and took home the gold with a 2-0 scoreline,

leaving Lewis and Cooper Silver Medallists.

This is an outstanding achievement for both boys.

Well done!

On Thursday 22/4 the Open Girls Volleyball team travelled to Brisbane Water

Secondary College to compete in round 3 of the CHS Sydney North Knockout

competition.

Erina started very strong in the first set with a convincing lead. However,

Brisbane Water gained some momentum to take the first set 1-0.

Once again Erina started very strong with a convincing lead only to be chased

down by Brisbane Water. However, our girls were able to stay composed and

even the score 1-1.

Brisbane Water came into the third set firing and took a quick lead. Fortunately

the girls from Erina were able to take the lead and win the set with some

dominant serving from the team captain, Ash Meyer, and win the match 2-1.

こどものひ、おめでとう!Happy Children’s Day!

こどものひ or Children’s Day is a

celebration for both boys and girls on May 5 each year across Japan. It is a day to wish all children happiness and prosperity.

Families fly carp streamers from flagpoles outside their house for each child in the house and put up special displays in their homes. Year 7 and 8 students will be looking at the Children’s Day festivities in their classes this week.

In Term 1, Year 7 and 8 classes, launched into learning the hiragana alphabet and introducing themselves. The Japanese language has three different writing styles used in different writing contexts; hiragana, katakana and kanji. The hiragana alphabet is comprised of 46 characters and used for words that have a Japanese origin e.g. sushi.

Rosalie 7ALily 8I

Junior Japanese

Year 7 and 8 classes created a presentation, introducing themselves and designed an original mascot to represent the suburb they live in. There were a lot of creative mascots designed for their projects.

All students wrote an introduction in hiragana including their name, where they live and described their character and suburb with adjectives. We have been so impressed at the work they have created.

This term, Year 7 and 8 are looking to continue talking about their personal lives and learn how to discuss their age and family.

Page 16: 4 May 6 May 10 May 14 May - Home - Erina High School

We look forward to seeing the continued hard work and growth of Year 7 and 8.

Keep up your hard work, everyone.

successfully completed their first assessment task for the Preliminary Japanese Beginners course.

Special mention goes to Holly F and Shatay M for their outstanding achievements and also to

Maddox B, Byron E and Harry L for the effort they have put into their studies of Japanese during

Term 1.

Year 12 have just submitted their second assessment task. Fantastic effort from Tahlia W who

achieved a coveted 100% mark.

HSIE

Welcome back to Term 2 which looks to be a very busy one in HSIE. Term 1 ended with a

successful field visit for Year 12 Geography to Barangaroo in Sydney CBD where they

looked at urban consolidation and renewal. This case study will serve them well in their HSC

examination and they were a credit to EHS on the day. We have two more case study

excursions coming up to Green Square in Sydney and Taronga Zoo.

Ms Whitfield and Mr Avis have been preparing two teams of Year 10 and 11 for the Model

United Nations Assembly sponsored by the local Erina Rotary Club. The students will take

part in a model United Nations Assembly where they will discuss important global

contemporary issues included nuclear non-proliferation, terrorism and civilian casualties in

war. Acting as Iraq we have Jasmine Spiros, Zara Clarkson and Kianna Edmonds and

representing Iran we have Lisette Tyson, India-Rose Barnett and Lucia Richards. Good luck

to these students and staff.

Ms Whitfield has been busy organising the upcoming NAIDOC Day Celebration with our

local partner primary schools which will be held at Erina High School on Friday 16th July.

This will entail a whole school assembly and a range of cultural activities for the students to

indulge in. The school is also proud to announce that we will host the next Tjudibaring

AECG meeting in the new Mirrabooka facility which is open to all stakeholders. We look

forward to welcoming you all.

In Term 1 some students competed in the Australian Geography Competition which is a

short test based on Geographical skills and understanding. While we await the results, I

would like to congratulate all students that took part and improved their skills in the subject,

fingers crossed for an EHS winner!!! Term 2 is very busy with assessments and reports and

we would like to remind students that if they need assistance in any way then our office door

at the top of A block is always open. Enjoy the term.
