State Ambassador Corner: Greetings California 4-H! This is our inaugural State Ambassador Corner article! We would like to be able to keep everyone informed as to what it is that we are up to. Our team has had a whirlwind year since starting in August. Some of our team was able to attend State Leader’s Forum. From State Leader’s Forum, we took ideas and concepts that we had learned and applied them to developing one of our workshops. We developed a Visibility workshop to present to youth to give ideas about how to increase 4-H visibility to businesses, corporations, and other community groups with similar messages and goals. The second workshop we developed was about record books. The workshop is a quick refresher about all things record book related and includes a survey to allow 4-H members to reflect and share their opinions about 4-H record books. We had the privilege of presenting these workshops at the sectional conferences this past winter. We are well on our way to planning State Leadership Conference 2014: “Raiders of the Lost Leadership.” SLC 2014 will be August 14-17, 2014 at UC Santa Cruz. More information will be available on the state website later this spring. We have had the chance to attend several other events lately. Rachel and Julianna attended Ag Day at the Capitol in March where they had the chance to mingle with state legislators and the general public. State Ambassadors Cole, Bobbi Jean, Siggy and Ashley attended the World Ag Expo in Tulare. The team also attended the state Camping Conference where they presented a Fun with a Purpose workshop. We are all looking forward to the rest of the year. See you at State Field Day!

    4-H Healthy Living

In January 2014, three delegates from California attended the National Healthy Living Summit at the 4-H Youth Conference Center. This Summit served to equip high school youth with educational tools and skills needed to help improve the health of their communities. Glenda (Ventura County), Audrey (Marin County), and Angela (Alameda County) participated in hands-on learning, interactive workshops led by health experts, and toured healthy living advocacy agencies in Washington, DC. Glenda and Audrey share their experiences below:

I spent the second weekend of January discussing broccoli and texting. Random, you say? Not quite. Topics like proper

nutrition; physical exercise, dangerous driving, and bullying were the heart of conversation at the National Youth Summit on

Healthy Living, where I was a youth representative. The summit took place in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and over the three days,

I attended workshops that covered topics from meal portion sizes to emotional health.

The goal of the summit was to inform 4-H representatives from across the country about ways they can promote healthy living

in their community. By the end of the conference, each state came up with an action plan that their representatives would enact

when they returned home. To help get ideas, each conference attendee took part in four workshops that focused on a specific health

related issue such as distracted driving or exercise. I attended sessions on nutrition, body image, bullying, and leadership

techniques. In addition to these sessions, each delegate also attended “lightening round” workshops where professionals from

businesses and non-profit organizations explained how they were attempting to make a difference and discussed ways that we

could get involved. This also allowed delegates to explore careers in the health field. I know that I hope to pursue a health-related

occupation, and this experience was invaluable. Finally, the group would gather as a whole each night to practice leadership

exercises or listen to guest speakers.

On the last day of the conference, the two other girls from California,

Audrey and Angela, and myself presented our action plan for the state.

We intend to reach out to other 4-H members by giving a nutrition and

fitness presentation at the California State Leadership Conference in

August. In my county, I plan on starting a fitness project where

members can earn prizes and pins. I would be happy to share what I have

learned with healthy living officers from other clubs, and I invite them to

email me at [email protected]. The conference was amazing and

I would recommend that anyone interested in healthy living apply to

    attend next year’s summit.

  • Stories from the Field

4-H Healthy Living (continued) This past January I was lucky enough to receive the opportunity to attend the first 4-H National Youth Healthy Living

Summit in Chevy Chase, MD. As one of the 3 delegates from California, I had one of the longest distances to cover getting there,

but coming home; there was no need to put any effort into rationalizing all the travel.

So much went on at the summit, that I could never hope to tell it all, but between the insightful presentations, the driven people,

and, of course, the healthy food, it is also hard to pick favorite parts. First off, as with any 4-H event, the attendees were all

obviously excited to be there and contribute to the common goal. The goal of the summit was to raise awareness of healthy living

and the practices that are part of a healthy lifestyle. This goal is something I personally believe in passionately, so another great

part of the summit was just being in an environment with 4-Hers from all around the country who also share that interest and

are anxious to speak-up on the topic.

    Going into the summit, the branch of healthy living I was most focused on was nutrition and eating for a healthy lifestyle;

however, when I got there, I was surprised that even though I did love the nutrition-oriented workshops, I actually found others

even more exciting, especially some of the ones on distracted driving. The summit helped open me up to this new angle of

    looking at a "healthy lifestyle."

Finally, one just stand-out moment of the trip was working creatively with my fellow California delegates on the last two days

to make a presentation of ideas how to bring some of what we learned back to our communities. We made a poster representing

our state spirit and delivered a Prezi presentation with our ideas. It was great to brainstorm in that environment, and then to

hear the presentations from all the other states. It is always great to work with peers who are thinking about the big issues of the

    world right now.

  • As many of you are well aware, the Cooperative Extension System is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Extension is, and always has been, about the people that it benefits. We are reaching out on social media to gather stories from people all across the United States to get their personal stories of how Extension has impacted their life. We’re asking people to post stories, photos, videos, etc. to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, blogs or any other social media site, using the hashtag #Ext100Years and then tweet it to us at @usda_nifa.

To kick things off, NIFA’s director Sonny Ramaswamy recorded this video message on YouTube. YOUcan help us: 1. Share your story with us. We want to hear from those who have worked in Extension too. How have you seen it work in your life? In the lives of others? 2. Can you pass this message along? Feel free to tweet or Facebook this out with a link to the YouTube video or email to your contacts. You can either pass along the YouTube video or the attached graphic that explains what we’re looking for.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #Ext100Years and tweet to us at @usda_nifa. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Journal of Expanded Learning Opportunities http://www.centralvalleyafterschool.org/index.php/about-afterschool/jelo-project The inaugural issue of the Journal of Expanded Learning Opportunities (JELO) is officially here! The journal is a peer-reviewed, online, open-access publication of the Central Valley Afterschool Foundation. The aim of the JELO is to connect research and promising practices throughout California and the nation, fostering a dialogue that engages both researchers and practitioners in the field. The JELO is the first of its kind to examine expanded learning more closely by bridging research and practice together. Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States The Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council have released an infographic focusing on highlights of their OJJDP-funded report “Confronting Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sex Trafficking of Minors in the United States.” The info-graphic illustrates how schools, police, victim services, businesses, the legal system, and health care providers can collaborate in preventing, identifying, and responding to commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors. Professionals who interact regularly with youth may not recognize those who are at risk or who may be victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. The report offers strategies, legislative approaches, and a research agenda around this victimization. Report Explores Unsolicited Online Experiences and Sexting The Crimes Against Children Research Center (CCRC) has released “Trends in Unwanted Online Experiences and Sexting: Final Report.” This report, supported by funding from OJJDP, summarizes key findings from the Third Youth Internet Safety Survey. Topics include youth reports of unwanted sexual solicitations, online harassment, uninvited exposure to sexual material, and “sexting.” Teens Take On Health Report Teens say they worry about stress, healthcare, lack of sleep, obesity & chronic illness...and they have ideas and solutions. Tomorrow, Dr. M. Molina of Molina Healthcare will release findings of the “Teens Take on Health” report, a teen-led research initiative to engage young people across the country in interactive dialogue about health. The full study and infographic will be available on the 4-H Healthy Living Research.
