Summer time is here, which means it’s Fair time. This summer

newsletter is devoted to sharing details about our county fair and

the Maryland State Fair. I encourage all of you to consider

participating in some way – exhibits, contests, entertainment,

family fun, and more. There truly is fun and hands-on education

for all! I also want to share information on how you and your

family can help before, during, and after the Fair with the many

duties that take place. Many hands make light work and that

really is the case at the county Fair! The more 4-H members,

volunteers, and families that help with set-up and fair “jobs,” the

less work it is for all the volunteers who plan and run the Fair.

Please consider how YOU will help during the Fair – help with

set-up, exhibit check-in, dipping ice cream, helping in kitchen,

assisting with fair dinners, working at cake wheel booth, and so

much more. See inside for details on what, when, and where help

is needed most!

Looking forward to seeing you all this summer,

Hopping Around 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Club Members have been busy prepping for the State Fair with Breed ID practice and our newest member brought her bunny to our recent meeting to practice showmanship.

I Love Art 4-H Club The club has been very busy learning and growing this year with lots of art activities. We will be having our I Love Art 4-H Club Gallery Showing on Saturday, July 20th from 1-3pm at the Refuge Christian Fellowship in Greensboro. This is a fundraiser for our club and ask for $1/person entry fee. Please join us for our event and support our little artists.

Pure Country 4-H Club Members have been busy this spring. At the beginning of May, we got all of our market animals weighed and tagged for the Fair. Some of our members participated in the Sullivan Stock Show University program and the Eastern Shore 4-H Spring Show as well, and at the end of the month, we had our annual fundraiser, selling strawberry shortcake, at the Strawberry Festival in Ridgely.

Tail Waggers 4-H Club Our club met Friday May 17th at Martinak State Park. The group helped cleanup trash for the community, our own furry friends and nature friends to enjoy. We are helping to keep our parks and environment safe & clean.

4-H Rifle Club Congratulations to members Torrin Pallmann who achieved Marksman First Class and Elizabeth Pallmann who achieved 2nd Bar Sharp Shooter. Additionally, member Timothy Parks earned the highest achievement EVER in the 4-H club, DISTINGUISHED EXPERT. Distinguished Experts need 18 of 20 points on each of 5 bullseyes on 10 targets from each position. This is a very difficult task to complete and Tim is the first person in club history to achieve this ranking!

Volunteer Vittles: Why Become a Volunteer?

As a program, 4-H has enjoyed over 100 years of progress in positive youth development. However, did you know volunteers benefit from the program as well? You can help shape the next generation of leaders!

1. Research has shown that 4-H volunteers develop new knowledge and skills while involved with 4-H.

2. Volunteers can use 4-H leadership skills to help in other areas of their lives (work, home, school, etc.)

3. Being a UME certified 4-H volunteer can be listed on a resume!

If you have not thought about becoming a volunteer… now is the time! We are in the expansion phase in Caroline County and we are looking for caring adults who can help us grow. Everyone has a gift. The question is, are you willing to share yours with a caring youth? If you or someone you know wants to give back to the community, call the office to request a Volunteer Application today!

4-H Animal Husbandry & Quality Assurance On-line Training – complete by July 15th

Members who exhibit alpacas, cattle, goats, horses/ponies, llamas, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine are REQUIRED to take this online training to be eligible to show your animals. Complete the training the first year you work on a new animal project and every year you change age levels (junior to intermediate, intermediate to senior). Juniors do the introductory section.

Intermediates and seniors also do the sections for the individual species; any year you add a new species, you complete the section for that species.

Here is the link: http://www.agnr.umd.edu/ahqa/. (Note: you will need to use either Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari web browsers to access this link; it will not work in Internet Explorer.)

You must complete this online training by July 15th. Please print out the certificate at the completion of the training for your records. Contact Navonne at [email protected] if you have questions or need help.
