4-H Connections Newsletter January/February 2019 Educator’s Corner Hello Outagamie 4-H Families! My name is Alicia Schroeder-Haag and I am the new 4-H Program Coordinator for Outagamie County. I am super excited to be here and cannot wait to meet and get to know as many of you as I can. Let me share a bit about myself…I grew up in the 4-H program in Sheboygan County. Educator’s CornerHello Outagamie 4-H Families!

My name is Alicia Schroeder-Haag and I am the new 4-H Program Coordinator for Outagamie County. I am super excited to be here and cannot wait to meet and get to know as many of you as I can.

Let me share a bit about myself…I grew up in the 4-H program in Sheboygan County. I started as a Cloverbud and was a member until a year after I graduated high school. I made sure to take advantage of as many things 4-H related that I could (e.g. trips, scholarships, awards, and a variety of projects). After graduation, I was involved as a leader for a bit before I got married in 2005. My husband, Paul, and I have four children (three girls and one boy), and a dog named Bailey. In my spare time, I love to ride horses, decorate cakes, go camping, travel, and just hang out with my family.

I am really looking forward to this summer and all the excitement that it brings with 4-H camp and the county fair! I am anxious to see the amazing things you have been working on for the Drama Festival this spring, and I want to hear all about your projects, trips, meetings, and ideas. Please come and introduce yourself if you see me around or send me an e-mail with a quick note telling me a little about what you are doing in 4-H.

4-H has always been a part of my life. Even when I wasn’t directly involved as an adult it still has had a great effect on who I am and how I operate. No matter what it is that I am doing I am always looking for ways “to make the best better.” Sincerely,

Upcoming Events4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Date and Location TBD

The Dairy Bowl is a “quiz bowl” competition where all questions deal with dairy topics. Teams of four members compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Benefits of the 4-H Dairy Bowl:1. Encourages 4-H members to develop a more complete knowledge of dairy animals and related subjects.2. Open to all dairy project members, including those who may not own a dairy animal.3. Provides a way to develop alertness and self confidence.

Meats Judging | 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl & Skillathon Learning sessions for both events are scheduled together. If you are interested and would like more information in either of these events, please contact the coaches. 2019 Outagamie County coaches are Justin Kimball 259-9721 and Barb Maroszek 655-4648.

Foods Project and Family Learning DayHey 4-H members and parents, stop by our display during Family Learning Day February 16. There we will have information about the Foods Revue with committee members on hand to answer food project questions. Foods project leaders are also encouraged to stop in to gather ideas for what you can do at your club level to assist your members and give them a wonderful learning experience.

Ever wonder what you can do outside in winter that is not sledding or skiing? Come to Plamann Park to check out other winter activities and explore the many options. Everyone is invited to this leadership/team building event! If you are a current club officer, a 4-H committee member, a youth leader, a mentor interested in leadership, main leader or a youth officer mentor, this is for YOU! This event will be filled with leadership tips and team building and will have a special guest speaker. Along with leadership activities, we offer 2 games of bowling, shoes, beverage, light lunch and time to hang out with 4-H friends and leaders…priceless!!!

An invitation will be sent to current officers and main leaders. If you do not receive your invitation and are interested in attending, please contact the UW-Extension Office at 832-5123.

Cost to you: $8.00 to reserve your spot, you will receive a $5.00 refund when you attend. NO REFUND if you are unable to attend once signed up. RSVP by January 10. This event is limited to the first 40 who sign up, so don’t wait. You won’t want to miss out!!

All 4-H Members, Foods Members, Parents, and Project Leaders, you are invited to attend a county wide foods meeting. This year’s focus is: Learn how to dry fruits and herbs, make Fruit Roll Ups and more!! Ellen Wheaton and her family from Fairview 4-H club will provide us with some fun and interactive demonstrations. We also will provide other tasty food training and hold a Q & A about the upcoming Foods Revue April 6 at the Northland Mall.

Upcoming Events2019 Outagamie County 4-H Family Learning Day February 16 | Fox Valley Technical College, Appleton | Registration DUE January 18

Youth, parents and 4-H volunteer leaders are all invited! Learn a new skill or gain fresh ideas. It will be a fun, informative day. Parents are encouraged to spend the day with their child and to help them find their sessions, or participate on their own. This event is open to the general public as well, so please share widely.

Sessions are filled on a first come, first served basis complete with payment (if payment is required for workshop). We reserve the right to cancel sessions if registration is too low.

NEWthisyear: 4-H Showcase displays. Showcase displays and tables will be available to view from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Come and check the many opportunities that are available throughout Outagamie County 4-H, whether it’s a project, event, activity, or an opportunity to expand your 4-H experience outside of the county. Pre-registration is required and due by January 18. Some workshops have fees associated with them, these costs are listed in each workshop description. Basketball TournamentMarch 22-24 & 29-31 | Immanuel Lutheran School, GreenvilleFebruary 7 | Mandatory Coaches Meeting | UW-Extension Office |7:30 pm

ALL 4-H club coaches MUST attend the meeting, to review expectations, rules, and draw for tournament order. Team registration begins at 7:15 pm. Reminder: All coaches must go through volunteer orientation and be certified 4-H volunteers. Questions? Contact Rose Rynish at 450-9653 or email: [email protected]. Rose Rynish is willing to train assistant directors to run the scoreboard and record the books during the Annual 4-H Basketball Tournament. If you’re interested or have questions, please contact her by January 30. Rose will set up a night in late February or early March for a training session.

4-H Horse and Pony ProjectJanuary 22 | Fox Valley Technical College, Room B130 | 7:00 pm

Our first horse meeting will be January 22, 7:00 pm at Fox Valley Technical College, room B130. The best way to get to this room is to enter the main entrance (which faces highway 41). Go to the first hallway intersection, turn right and the room should be on your left. If you reach the café, you passed the room.

During the October 2018 meeting, we had a great time with our hot fudge, caramel, strawberry ice cream social, handing out our year end awards, and electing our new board. Upcoming Events4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl & Skillathon Contest March 2 | UW-Madison Animal Sciences Building

Livestock Bowl is a quiz competition with questions about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics. Students use a buzzer to answer the questions. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss-up question round. The winning 4-H senior team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl competition in Omaha, NE. Skillathon Contest is made up of a written quiz and learning stations such as breed, feed and equipment identification as well as team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. The top Senior level 4-H team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4-H Skillathon Contest, held in Louisville at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE).

This contest provides an educational program for all project members, including those who may not own a project animal, and provides a way to develop self-confidence.

4-H Art Beat!March 15-16 | Upham Woods, Wisconsin Dells Registration DUE January 31

Created for 4-H members in grades 3-5, their parents (parents are not required to attend) and leaders, 4-H ArtBeat! is the introductory program for Wisconsin 4-H Arts and Communication! ArtBeat! will be held at Upham Woods. The weekend will feature a variety of arts projects including music, drama, arts & crafts, and more!

4-H members will explore their own creativity while discovering the great variety of 4-H Arts & Communication experiences available to them. Session leaders will be 4-H older youth, adult leaders and 4-H staff members with a wealth of experience to share. Participants will rotate through a variety of sessions held throughout camp, including outdoors. Both youth and adult participants stay in the cabins. Camp begins Friday evening at 7 pm and ends Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.

The fee includes materials and supplies, snacks, overnight lodging and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Transportation is NOT provided by the State 4-H Office. Come join the excitement of this brand new opportunity!

Project UpdatesAttention! Clubs and Groups Planning Winter Activities Injuries sustained while tobogganing, sledding, tubing or downhill skiing are not covered under the dollar-a-year policy for 4-H Clubs; however full coverage is available by using special event coverage offered by the American Income Life Special Risk Division. Volunteer Leaders may request coverage for snow sports using Special Activities Coverage for Accident or Illness. Rabbit & Poultry Members May 5 | Fun Day and Swap | Outagamie County Fairgrounds | 11:00 am

All poultry & rabbit members are expected to complete an educational training each project year. Attending YQCA training meets the requirements; other options will be announced via email. To be eligible to sell in the auction, and to claim fair awards, poultry & rabbit members must meet the educational training requirement. Rabbit and Poultry members can make their own carriers at Family Learning Day (see Family Learning Day for more information). Fun Day and Swap is May 5 at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds at 11:00 am. More details will be available at a later date.

Project UpdatesYouth for the Quality Care of Animals YQCA is offered to youth in a couple of ways:• Online curriculum – a youth exhibitor annually will

complete three interactive online modules and corresponding quizzes. $12/person/year.

Available 24/7 which allows exhibitors flexibility to take course at their convenience.• Face-to-face – Trainer led programs. Find the next

program closest to you at yqca.org $3/person/year. To register for the program both online and face to face:• Log into http://yqca.org/ and follow the step by step

instructions.

Newthisyear: youth can “test out” – need to get an 80% or better score, 50 questions, pay when pass test. Certificate available in “My Library” i. Intermediate (12 yrs): for 3 years = $36 ii. Senior (15 yrs): for 4 years = $48 iii. Young Adult (19 yrs): for 3 years = $36

LivestockProjectMembers(Beef,Swine,SheepandGoat)Exhibitors must have one year experience showing a species at the county fair before being able to sell that species in their 2nd year (i.e. an exhibitor only exhibits a lamb in 2017, so the exhibitor may sell only a lamb in 2018 and cannot sell a steer or hog).

All exhibitors in the market sale are required to attend one county-level 4-H project meeting per species (enrolled in beef, sheep, swine, goats - 4 species, 4 meetings). Anyone not attending will not be allowed to enter their animal in the sale. You may attend an educational meeting in another county; however, members must turn in a document signed by the instructor as verification of attendance (form found here, outagamie.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/projects-2/livestock/). YQCA does not qualify as an educational meeting for the livestock projects. YQCA is required for all livestock projects (beef, sheep, swine & meat goats). It’s time to make sawdust! We’ll go over safety, plans, materials and instructions. Projects will include Spaghetti Measure and Recipe Box. Your completed project can be used as a fair entry!

Youth LeadersHelping The Homeless ProjectTheHomelessNEEDUs!!!YouCANMakeaDifference!!

The Youth Leaders have been donating bags with goodies to the homeless for many years now, and this year it’s getting switched up a bit. Instead of doing it in December, we will be doing it as a Valentine surprise in February. The bags will be donated to Pillars, formerly known as the Homeless Shelter. Your club can choose an item along with the needed amount from the list, or a monetary donation and sign up for that item before January. You may bring your donation to the Jan. 28 Adult Leaders meeting being held at the Town of Center at 7:00 p.m. or you may give your club’s donation to any youth leader or mentor. The Youth Leaders will be meeting February 21, 6:30 pm at Center Town Hall to assemble the bags, make cards, decorate cookies, and make a meal for donation. Everyone is welcome to help! Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated!!!

Volunteer Leaders Action Center Stage Hey! It’s not too early to start thinking about performing on the Action Center Stage at the Outagamie County Fair! Just talk to an Outreach Committee member and be the first to send an email to [email protected] to book your time and date. Also, think about entering the Pie Contest! Yummy rewards available!

4-H Promotion The Outreach Committee is looking for non-4-H related events that we could attend to promote 4-H. Please contact a committee member, found in the Family Handbook. Promotional totes are filled with 4-H goodies and are just waiting for you to use them! Contact Sheila, [email protected], to borrow one.

“Join 4-H” SignsThank you to those that proudly displayed your “Join 4-H” sign again this year! The winners of the competition were: Pat VanDenHeuvel, Joe Albers, and Sue Erdmann.

Tractor Supply Company Thank you to Buchanan Badgers for promoting 4-H during 4-H Week. During National 4-H week, Tractor Supply Company was selling Paper Clovers for $1 to benefit 4-H. The Buchanan Badgers 4-H club was there with projects they showed at the fair.

Congratulations2018 4-H Meats Processing Contest ResultsWe had another great year at the 4-H Meats Processing Contest. This year, 13 youth participants enjoyed making breakfast links with their own special recipe. Phil Schmidt, owner of The Meat Block, educated the youth on different recipe choices, the art of making links, and delivered tasty samples of each recipe for everyone to enjoy. Participants voted on which recipe was their favorite.

Coming in with first place was Kadie Biese from Wide Awake Forward. Her winning recipe included Korean Sauce with Teriyaki and Apricots. Congratulations Kadie! There was a tie for second place of Tyler Graff from Bent Arrow with his recipe of Maple Base, Brown Sugar, Fennel, and Apple; and Mike Stille from Bent Arrow with his recipe of Southern Belle Base, Apple, Cranberry, Corn Syrup Solids, and Cinnamon.

Other high placing individuals were: Rebeka Jo Stille, Bent Arrow; Eli Boehm, Bent Arrow; Alicia Schroeder, Wide Awake Forward.

Congratulations to all the youth who participated this year! All the recipes tasted delicious!

We are planning on having the contest next year, so if you missed the opportunity to join the fun and excitement, there will be another contest next fall. Bacon will be the product for next year, so bring a 4-H friend, and enjoy comparing recipes!

2018 WI 4-H Fall Forum ConferenceThe 2018 WI 4-H Fall Forum Conference, had over 60 counties represented. Outagamie County had a fantastic representation of five youth leaders and six adult volunteer leaders. Everyone participated in workshops, activities, and networking with 4-Hers around the state. They built leadership and communication skills.

Bits & PiecesOutagamie County 4-H Family Handbook The Family Handbook is a great resource for both new and returning 4-H members, families and leaders. It contains information such as: the 4-H emblem & symbols, 4-H terms, contact information for clubs, resource leaders, program committees, Leaders Association meeting dates, tentative calendar of events, activities and events, award & educational travel opportunities and Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development Policies. Every family enrolled in 4-H should receive a printed copy of the 4-H Family Handbook. If you have not received your copy yet, please check with your Club Main Leader. It is also available through 4Honline.

4-H Community Service Grant A grant providing seed money for 4-H youth to implement educational and community service activities, sponsored by the 4-H Leaders Association. Any 4-H club can apply. Applications can be submitted throughout the year. Applications are available on the county 4-H website under the Leaders Association tab.

Wisconsin 4-H License Plates AvailableThe Wisconsin 4-H license plate is now available. The specialty plate, available through the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles, supports the Wisconsin 4-H program and has the message “4-H Empowering Youth.” The sale of the plate includes a fee that goes to the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation. Half of the proceeds from every plate sale will go back to the county in which the plate was purchased. The other half will be used for state and regional 4-H programs. Scholarship Opportunities Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board ScholarshipApplication DUE Friday, March 22

The Wisconsin State Fair Dairy Promotion Board is offering $1,000 scholarships to be used during the second semester of the 2018-19 school year. Third and fourth-year college students pursuing dairy-related or food science degrees at one of Wisconsin’s four-year universities are eligible to apply.

Applicants will be evaluated on involvement and leadership in dairy-related activities, scholastic achievement, and career objectives. Finalists will be interviewed mid-April, with the recipients to be recognized at the 2019 Wisconsin State Fair.

CPF-Outagamie County 4-H Graduating ScholarshipApplications DUE Friday, March 1, 4:00 pm

The CPF-Outagamie County 4-H Graduating Scholarship Committee will award scholarships up to $4,000 per year, more if funding is available, to 4-H members who plan to further their education as a full-time student pursuing either a Bachelor’s, Associate, or another accredited program.

Eligibility:1. Must be a current Outagamie County 4-H Member in good standing, having participated on the club and county levels.2. Applicant must be a current 4-H member and a senior in high school or in their first year of post-secondary schooling.3. Applicant must have been a member for a minimum of 4 years with an accredited 4-H program and a current member of an Outagamie County 4-H Club.4. Must have a minimum high school grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. 5. Must send either by email, US postal service, (must arrive by due date) or drop off at the UW-Extension office, a completed application form and necessary documents and letters, all together, by 4:00 p.m. March 1, 2019.outagamie.uwex.edu/4-h-youth-development/scholarship/ by mid January.

WI 4-H Foundation 2018 ScholarshipApplications DUE March 15 | 5 pm

The Wisconsin 4-H Foundation will award more than $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students pursuing higher education in 2019. To be considered for financial support, applications must be received by the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation via email by March15. Wisconsin 4-H Foundation scholarships are awarded to students based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals.

Outagamie Forage Council Scholarship Award Application DUE February 5

The Outagamie County Forage Council is proud to sponsor a $500 educational scholarship for a deserving youth entering or already enrolled in post-secondary education in the area of agriculture. Students completing their senior year of high school who have enrolled in, or students currently attending an accredited institution in a technical college certificate or diploma program, two-year Associate Degree program or four-year Bachelor of Science Degree program are eligible. Those students majoring in agronomy, soil science, or production related agriculture may receive preference. Student is to be a graduate from an Outagamie County High School or a resident of Outagamie County.
