Many biophotonics applications require powerful multi-color laser radiation in order to excite various dyes with high spectral selectivity. To this end, “breadboard solutions” are up to now widely employed: several laser sources are combined with dichroic mirrors on an optical table. However, these setups are prone to misalignment and highly sensitive to environmental changes. A much more favorable solution with respect to reliability, compactness and robustness is the iChrome MLE – a true and complete OEM device for demanding multi-color applications. Up to four different wavelengths from a wide range of lasers from UV to IR can be selected according to the desired application. Two versions of the system are available: the iChrome MLE-S, a compact all-diode laser system, comprising up to 4 different diode lasers and the iChrome MLE-L, with up to 3 different diode lasers and one DPSS laser fully integrated in one single box. In both systems, the individual lasers are efficiently combined and delivered through one single mode, polarization maintaining fiber (all-in-one PM/SM fiber output).

Both systems feature TOPTICA’s COOLAC technology. This exceptional technique ensures a Constant Optical Output Level and provides unprecedented fiber coupling efficiency. To compensate for misalignments due to mechanical stress and environmental changes such as temperature or vibrations, the auto-recalibration automatically aligns the system with a single push of a button. Thus, no manual realignment is necessary any longer, offering true drop-shipment capability and ensuring exceptional long term power stability. Furthermore, the iChrome MLE is microprocessor controlled and thus enables flexible OEM integration. High speed analog and digital modulation allow fast switching of laser wavelength and intensity, e.g. for minimal exposure of the sample reducing phototoxicity and bleaching of the fluorescent dye.

With highest output levels, exceptional power stability and fast speed modulation, instruments like confocal microscopes, high content screening systems or flow cytometers will greatly benefit of these compact and reliable multi-color laser engines.

Fiber Delivery

After efficiently combining the individual laser lines, the iChrome MLE delivers the laser light via one single mode, polarization maintaining fiber. In order to avoid degradation by irradiation in the UV regime, special long-life fibers are employed.

By default the system is equipped with an FC/AFC (8° angled) connector. For convenient OEM integration other output options are available on request.

Possible Fiber outputs are: - FC/AFC connector (standard) - (e.g. FC/APC, FC/PC, SC,...) on request

The iChrome MLE requires only one control interface in order to operate all laser lines simultaneously. For this purpose, a graphical user interface is included by default, which gives full control for the individual laser lines and allows operating the iChrome MLE as stand-alone system.

For easiest and flexible OEM integration, the system is equipped with all established communication interfaces. Communication can take place e.g. via RS 232, TCP/IP or via programmable in- and outputs of a DB-15 connector.

COOLAC TechnologyUnique Solution for High Power Hands-Off Fiber Coupled Lasers

Aligning and focusing a laser beam into ultra tiny single mode fibers (down to core diameters of 2.5 µm) with highest efficiency is utmost challenging: Laser pointing fluctuations, deviations in the beam path and smallest thermal or mechanical drifts in the fiber mounting can contribute to a significant loss of fiber coupling efficiency and thus in decreased output power. Up to now manual realignment by a trained technician was required to recalibrate the laser output power from time to time.

TOPTICA‘s unique solution for high power single-mode permanently fiber coupled lasers is the COOL technology (Constant Optical Output Level). This patent pending

fiber coupling concept is novel to the industry, and does not use any mechanical micro adjustable parts, which normally are the first to shift due to varying ambient conditions (e.g. temperature changes or vibrations). All major optical components are solidly mounted and the optical micro alignment is unsusceptible to mechanical and thermal distortions or translations.

The auto-calibration feature automatically realigns laser lines of the system with a single push of a button. This ensures full drop shipment capability, push-button installation and exceptional long term operational stability. The result is a multi-color system featuring a high and constant

power level after fiber delivery which is essential for quantitative and reliable data.

COOLAC benefits:•Auto Calibration feature •Combinedfibercouplingvaluesin excess of 50% can be restored by a single push-button command •Dropshipmentwarrantyandpush- button installation: Laser in spec after push-button command •Unsusceptibletothermalfluctuations between 15 and 40 °C •Unsusceptibletoextensivemechanical disturbances •Highestoperationalstability
