Cathay Post was also repre-

sented in the Memorial Day Cer-

emony at the San Francisco Na-

tional Cemetery, located in the

Presidio on May 27th. Mem-

bers who joined in were David

Wong, Nelson Lum, Dale King,

Roger Dong, Bob Butchart, Chee

Yee, W. T. Jeanpierre, Richard

Ow, Edward Lee, and

Jack Jair. Also several

members of our sup-

port unit came to par-

ticipate as well. This

year’s program includ-

ed a special recogni-

tion to honor and to

remember the Korean

War veterans who

served. Several of our

members received a

certificate of apprecia-

tion for their services

during this military

conflict.

I would like to add a big thank

you to board member Roger

Dong, for publicizing Cathay

Post’s activities at the recent

Asian Pacific Island Festival on

se two veterans posts would

come and pay tribute to our WW

chinese ancestry. The event took

place at the Memorial Plaque

located in the center of the park.

Joining me from our Post were

veterans Frank Chew, Gary

Chew, Jack Jair, W. T.

myself are also members of the

Veterans of Foreign Wars organ-

ization.

Dear Cathay Post Members

and Friends,

A big thank you to the many vol-

unteers who helped our Post

with the recent 82nd Anniver-

sary dinner celebration on May

17th at the Far East Seafood Res-

taurant. . It was a memorable

occasion and a success-

ful event. Please ac-

cept this humble thanks

from the directors and

executive board for a

job well done. I have

received a large num-

ber of positive com-

ments about the festivi-

ties. In addition, I had

the opportunity to meet

with several veterans

who have expressed an

interest in joining Ca-

thay No. 384. The

event also received me-

dia coverage from the

Sing Tao Daily and the World

Journal publications.

Special thanks to all of the mem-

bers who came out and support-

ed our Post’s joint ceremony

As with each monthly member-

a complimentary lunch to all at-

tendees. For the next three

months, the Post will have spon-

sorships for these lunches. On

June 8th, the lunch will be pro-

vided by the Asian Week Foun-

Free program. Free blood test-

ing for individuals will be availa-

ble as well. For the July 13th

meeting, Bristol Myer Squibb

will be providing a complimen-

tary lunch. A guest speaker will

be present to discuss the issues

of having Hep B. For the August

10th date, several officials from

the Woodlawn Memorial Park

will be hosting the lunch session.

Congratulations to the new

board of directors who were

elected or appointed at the May

meeting. There are a number of

young veterans who will be serv-

Congratulations to our new

elected and appointed direc-

tors! America is such a wonder-

ful country. The transition of

power from one administration

to another has been fairly peace-

ful throughout American histo-

ry, with the exception of the

election of 1860. Many other

countries throughout the world

still experience riots and the

military taking to the streets

during these transition periods.

I hope the transition from the

2011 team to the 2013 team will

make American Legion Post 384

a better and stronger community

leader.

Speaking of government, the

California Boys State program is

this month. Approximately

1000 California High School

Seniors will be converging in the

state capital for a one week

hands on civic program starting

June 22nd. District 8 is sending

12 boys, of which Post 384 is

sponsoring 4 of them. Boys

from Thurgood Marshall, Gali-

leo, International Studies Acad-

emy, and Saint Ignatius will be

representing Post 384. Hats off

to you for supporting such a

great program that promotes

Americanism! For more infor-

mation please visit

Finally, the former Church

space has been leased. Soon Bel

Builders a veteran owned com-

pany will be moving their opera-

the rent money will improve the

quality of our monthly lunch-

First and foremost, I want to ex-

press my personal appreciation

for the trust that you've shown

me by electing me as your 2nd

Vice Commander. I will do my

best to fulfill my duties and will

always keep the best interest of

Cathay Post #384 paramount

in the execution of my duties. I

would also want to extend a big

thank you to all of you who sup-

ported our 82nd anniversary

dinner. The event could not have

been such success without the

hard work of our members and

support members. I have re-

ceived nothing but good feed-

backs from those who attended

the event. I like to take this op-

portunity to invite all of you to

give us your constructive inputs

so that we can make the neces-

sary improvements at our next

function.

The American Legion War Me-

morial Commission has begun

its move to the new location at

205 13th Street Suite 3300. The

contracted movers will move the

remaining furniture from the

War Memorial Veterans Build-

ing to the new location on Satur-

day, June 1st. As predicted,

there are a thousand things that

need to be attended to. The

move also has given us an op-

portunity to clear out some of

the long hidden and neglected

documents and outdated equip-

ments. Documents and equip-

ments that had been accumulat-

ed over the past 80 years. Most

of them that contain no specific

historical significance are being

scanned for the purpose of keep-

ing a permanent record and the

originals can now be disposed.

The task of looking over all these

documents was very time con-

suming but we have managed

to get most of it done. We have

also cleared out most of the di-

lapidated furnishings by either

donating them to non profit

groups or marked them for dis-

posal. By the way, our Adjutant

Tony Zhang has made numerous

trips to pick up furniture that

can be put to use here at Cathay

Post. I want to acknowledge To-

ny's efforts that most members

are not aware of.

If you have some free time,

please stop on by the new office

of the Commission and take a

look at how we are operat-

ing. Due to the small amount of

space that is currently available

to the Commission, many Amer-

ican Legion Posts will not be giv-

en space at the new location.

Even though Cathay Post

#384 is one of the most active

posts in San Francisco, there will

not be any space designated to

Cathay Post at the new site

since Cathay Post is fortunate

to have its own facility. The

Commission will try to do its

best to facilitate any post that

needs to use the meeting room

at the new site. If you need to

use the facility for whatever rea-

son, please contact Ms. Jamie

Lopez (415-861-4920) and she

will try to schedule you for the

usage base upon availability.

Needless to say, we must give

usage priority to the American

Legion posts here in San Fran-

cisco before any other entities.

Having said that, if you have a

need , please feel free to contact

us and we will see what can be

done.

As has been mentioned in the

past news letter and at our last

monthly meeting, Eddie

Ramirez, Commander of Post

505, was elected as the new

Eighth District Council Com-

mander. We, members of Ca-

thay Post #384,would certain-

ly want to convey our best wish-

es and to congratulate him for

his elevation as Commander of

our district. He will be sworn in

soon and take the reign of the

District for the next year. I urge

all the members of our post to

support his efforts to enhance

game between the Golden State

would have taken place already.

I hope those of you that attend-

ed this event would have en-

joyed the festivities.

At our next monthly meeting,

you will be asked to decide how

the future location of our post

within our building will be situ-

ated. I trust that you will give

the members of the Executive

Board the direction that you

would like our post to take. I

look forward to your participa-

I want to thank you for electing

me Third Vice Commander for

Cathay Post #384. I am looking

forward to serving our members

and our community. I’ve had

the good fortune of meeting and

working with some of our mem-

bership. For those of you I have

not met, I’d like to tell you about

my background. I am a San

Francisco native, having left the

City just long enough to attend

law school at U.C. Davis, Officer

Candidate School and The Basic

School in Quantico, Virginia and

Naval Justice School in New-

port, Rhode Island before get-

ting assigned as the Chief Trial

Counsel and then Senior De-

fense Counsel at Marine Corps

Air Station, New River, Jackson-

ville, North Carolina [in the in-

terest of full disclosure, the Ma-

rines assigned only one attorney

to staff each office]. After wrap-

ping up my tour, I returned to

San Francisco and joined a civil

litigation Downtown law firm,

where I am now litigating civil

cases as a partner.

In 2009, my good friend Roger

Dong “conned” me into doing

some editing work for the Post

newsletter that he had started

up. The rest, they say, is histo-

ry. Shortly after my first editing

assignment, I joined the Post

and then became the newslet-

ter’s editor [now you’re under-

standing why I said

“conned”.] During the 18

months I served as the editor, I

modernized the look and format

of the newsletter and then also

served as the editor of the Post’s

80th Anniversary Yearbook. Let

me just say, neither the Marine

Corps, nor law school prepared

me for the difficulties and com-

plexities of running both opera-

tion, but it was all worth it. Dur-

ing this time, I got to work close-

ly with the Post board and to

meet many of the Post mem-

bers.

I am very honored that a fellow

Marine, Ed Wong, nominated

me for 3rd Vice Commander, and

that Roger Dong [the same gen-

tleman who conned me into

serving as the newsletter editor]

“seconded” Ed’s nomination. I

look forward to serving the Post,

and working closely with my fel-

low commanders to ensure that

the Post continues its mission in

serving its veteran community,

broadening its membership and

operating with the highest of

integrity.

By the way, on June 1, I attended

the Charity Wheelchair Basket-

ball Game between the Golden

State Road Warriors and the San

Francisco Police Department

[hosted by Cathay Post]. What a

game! Thanks to 2nd Vice Com-

mander Nelson Lum for putting

on such a great and well attend-

ed event. The “Men and Women

in Blue” fought hard and lost by

only a few baskets [though the

Road Warriors spotted them

about 80 points].

The story of the day, of course,

was the Road Warriors. These

wheel-chaired Warriors are

some of the most talented ath-

letes I’ve had the pleasuring of

watching. They controlled every

aspect of the game from the

opening tip-off to the final buzz-

er. They passed like the Globe-

trotters [the fancy, no look, be-

hind the back magic] and rarely

missed shots [be it alley-oops,

lay-ups, or three pointers]. They

were true magicians and great

sports [heck, they even helped

pushed some of the cops who

couldn’t really handle being

wheel chair bound for the

game]. My mother is wheel

chair bound, so I have some

idea of what these athletes

have to endure on a daily ba-

sis, and their extraordinary

dedication and skills and the

practice necessary to make

wheelchair basketball seem so

easy. Congratulations to the

police officers for giving it

their best. And, finally, it’s

worth noting that Post Adju-

tant Tony Zhang, who was the

Post’s sacrificial lamb during

the basketball game, did a

great job in representing the

Post and our community. By

my count, he attempted over

20 shots and made ZERO

[which I think is slightly better

than Andris Biedrins’ free

throw shooting]. I’m looking

forward to next year’s game!

Cathay Post #384 82nd Annual Dinner

C a t h ay C h r o ni c l e

Wow, May 2013 was HOT

month! Cathay Post had our

82nd Birthday party, Memorial

Day was honored again at the

San Francisco Presidio National

Cemetery, there was our big

fund raiser pitting our San

Francisco Police Depart-

ment representatives against

the Golden State Road War-

riors in a wheel chair basketball

game, and we co-sponsored Ala-

meda City's Honoring all our

veterans of Asian Pacific Is-

lander descent. We will need a

month of rest in June to recover

from so much joyful activity.

The month of May is getting

busier and busier every year as

the celebration of Asian Heritage

month grows each year, and in-

volves more and more organiza-

tions and our Bay Area Asian

American community.

First, on Friday, May 17th, our

annual birthday party was held

one of the oldest Chinatown

banquet restaurants, the Far

East Cafe. Most of us have

dined at this location, dozens of

times for many birthdays, wed-

dings, Post events, and family

association dinners. This time

we dined at the Far East to cele-

brate our big 82nd Birthday.

We had around 500 attendees

and San Francisco Board of Su-

pervisor President David Chiu

attended and thanked our Ca-

thay Post members and all vet-

erans for their service to our

Country. Chiu then presented a

Certificate of Honor to our Post,

and he then stayed at this dinner

for another hour chatting with

many people and taking photos

with many of our guests. We

Thank President Chiu for his

thoughtfulness and sharing of

his valuable time with us at our

birthday party.

Our Post Thanks everyone for attending our big birthday party, and we applaud and salute the many vol-

era, which deserves most of the credit for the images he has provided our Post. Frank is a special person in

our community who has photographed every major Chinatown event for many years. His imagery docu-

ments the history of many organizations in our City.

Next year, we want to invite everyone early to attend our 83rd Anniversary Party. We will be telling you

soon where and when we have that celebration.

2013 Memorial Day at the Presidio

C a t h ay C h r o ni c l e

On Sunday, May 27, 2013 the

city of San Francisco remem-

bered all our veterans who made

the ultimate sacrifice and all

who served and are now no

longer with us. The setting was

the beautiful and serene San

Francisco Presidio National

Cemetery. Cathay Post was

there. Many of our very senior

veterans were there too includ-

ing our AmVets and VFW col-

leagues. This occasion was addi-

tionally significant as it remem-

bered that we had fought in Ko-

rea sixty years ago, and that con-

flicted resulted in 54,000 casual-

ties, including 36,516 who made

the ultimate sacrifice. It was a

war that was not called a war,

and lingers on today.

The Presidio was also the home

of the Letterman Hospital,

which treated all the wounded

and sick returning by our hospi-

tal ships from Korea. That loca-

tion is now Lucas Studios, but

we should not forget that six

decades ago, it played a very im-

portant role in many of our sol-

diers who survived and suffered

a long time from the wounds of

that war.

For several decades, the Memo-

Golden State Road Warriors Trounced the San Francisco

Police Department

C a t h ay C h r o ni c l e

On Sunday, June 1, 2013, two of

our Post members, W.T.

Jeanpierre and Nelson Lum

arranged for the San Francis-

co Police Department bas-

ketball team to be led to slaugh-

tered by the Golden State

Road Warriors (GSRW)

"handicapped" in wheel chairs -

the wheel chairs did not turn out

to be a handicap. The SFPD

team agreed to also use wheel

chairs - to be fair -, and that

turned out to be very unfair.

The GSRW team spotted SFPD

40 points in the first half, and

30 more points in the second

half, and won easily over the

SFPD team which tried very

hard, but were able to only mus-

ter up a few points. Shooting

from a wheel chair, it appears,

requires a lot of practice and a

different set of muscles to be a

police officer.

Everyone had a great time at this

successful fund raiser. Thanks

to W. T. for giving us this great

idea, and Thanks for Nelson for

his hard and smart work in ob-

taining generous sponsorships

by the San Francisco Police

Officers Association and the

San Francisco Police Credit

Union. These two major spon-

sors covered our fund raising

expenses, and that meant that

our ticket sales would be our

profit.

Former Commander Emeritus

Bok Pon always made fund

raising successful, by covering

expenses with sponsorships.

That is a fund raising lesson all

who need to raise funds must

learn and use this as a guide to

your fund raising efforts. You

will not lose money, if your ex-

penses are covered in advance.

If you depend on ticket sales to

cover your expenses, you may be

very disappointed.

No one recalls the final score of

this debacle, but everyone had a

great time. We will do this again

next year, with a bigger crowd,

and lots more fun and games. If

you didn't make it this year,

make sure you join us next time,

to see if the SFPD will improve

their basketball shooting from

the hip. This year, they proved

that shooting from the hip is

what the Golden State Road

Warriors do really, really well.

Cathay Post Thanks both the

San Francisco Police De-

partment and the Golden

State Road Warriors for giv-

ing our Post the opportunity to

have this fund raising crowd

pleaser, and especially the

SFPD for allowing the GSWR

to win this mismatch, despite a

huge handicap of 75 points. We

never knew the SFPD were so

humble.

be added to the CAH national

website

org). Dong noted that among

the 4.5 million Americans with

Chinese blood in our country,

there are now just 200 individ-

uals who have made sufficient

significant contributions to be

designated heroes in this na-

tional organization. Both were

awarded with framed CAH

heroes’ certificates.
