A Small RequestA little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and prayed

for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided towrite God a letter requesting the $100.00.

When the postal authorities received the letter toGod, USA, they decided to send it to the President.

The president was so amused that he instructed hissecretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill. The presi-dent thought this would appear to be a lot of money toa little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the $5.00 bill andsat down to write a thank-you note to God, whichread:

Dear God: Thank you very much for sending themoney. However, I noticed that for some reason yousent it through Washington, D.C., and, as usual, thoseturkeys deducted $95.00 in taxes.

I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory.

Things I’ve learned from my Boys The following came from an anonymous Mother in

Austin, Texas...• A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a

2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep. • If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over

them with roller blades, they can ignite.• A 3-year old Boy’s voice is louder than 200 adults in

a crowded restaurant.• If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor

is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound Boywearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape.It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can,to spread paint on all four walls of a 20 x 20 ft.room.

• You should not throw baseballs up when the ceilingfan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, youhave to throw the ball up a few times before youget a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a longway.

• The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn’tstop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.

• When you hear the toilet flush and the words “uhoh”, it’s already too late.

• Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke, andlots of it.

• A six-year old Boy can start a fire with a flint rockeven though a 36-year old man says they can onlydo it in the movies.

• Certain Lego’s will pass through the digestive tractof a 4-year old Boy.

• Play dough and microwave should not be used in thesame sentence.

• Super glue is forever.• No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming

pool you still can’t walk on water.• Pool filters do not like Jell-O.• VCR’s do not eject “PB &J” sandwiches even though

TV commercials show they do.• Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.• Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driv-

ing.• Always look in the oven before you turn it on; plastic

toys do not like ovens.• The spin cycle on the washing machine does not

make earthworms dizzy.• It will, however, make cats dizzy.• Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.

City Adopts Carriage OrdinanceSt. Augustine’s City Commission has enacted a new

horse carriage ordinance, with promises to immediate-ly address changes to that ordinance.

A single modification passed with the ordinance -an extension of its effective date to June 1, but threeother proposed changes would be substantive andrequire the ordinance going through the second readingprocess again, and Mayor Joe Boles recommendedpassage with later modifications to avoid that.

Those changes include deleting a 4:30 to 6 p.m.carriage curfew, a franchise extension from five to 15years, and allowing assignability of permits.

Among elements of the new ordinance: a limit onthe number of carriage permits to 30, at a cost of$1,000 each or 2.5% of the business’ annual gross, whichever is greater.

Three Civil Rights Era Recognitions Coming Three scheduled ceremonies are planned to recog-

nize the 1960s civil rights era in St. Augustine. On April 26 at 1 p.m., an audiovisual exhibit featur-

ing the fingerprint card made with Dr. Martin LutherKing Jr’s arrest here will be dedicated at the ExcelsiorCultural Center in Lincolnville.

On May 14 at 4:30 p.m., a St. Augustine FootSoldiers Monument will be dedicated in the city’sPlaza de la Constitucion, and in June, a memorialwalkway will be dedicated to recognize former civilrights leader and Ambassador Andrew Young’s visithere.

The Excelsior exhibit, sponsored by the office ofSheriff David Shoar, features interviews with both Dr.King’s arresting office and a demonstrator who wasarrested with him. The Foot Soldiers Monument recog-nizes the great diversity of citizens whose demonstra-tions led to passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,and is funded with $70,000 in contributions from thecommunity.

The Andrew Young Crossing memorial, a 20-footpathway into the Plaza with impressions of his foot-steps, recognizes his visit in 1964 when he wasattacked and beaten while crossing King Street withdemonstrators. The City Commission approved$10,000 for the project, “as a gift to the citizens of St.Augustine.”

“M” is for..... Miss Jones had been giving her second-grade stu-

dents a lesson on science. She had explained aboutmagnets and showed how they would pick up nails andother bits of iron. Now it was question time and sheasked, “My name begins with the letter ‘M’ and I pickup things. What am I?”

A little boy on the front row said, “You’re a moth-er.”

$2.5 Million Sought for BayfrontThe city will apply for an estimated $2.5 million in

federal funds for "planning and implementation" ofscaled back traffic and pedestrian improvements alongthe bayfront. But if awarded it will likely be a yearbefore that money is received, City Manager JohnRegan said.

A three-phase project anticipates funding throughthe Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks Grant Program, designed to improve traffic and pedestrian flow aroundnational parks and monuments.

The $2.5 million would apply to Orange Streetimprovements, a widened bayfront walkway, side-walks, and bulb-outs - sidewalk extensions betweenparking spaces. Another $150,000 application will befor planning around a redesigned Castillo parking areain 2015 and roadway improvements in 2016.

Daniel McGirth(continued from page 1)

Georgia-Florida border as Florida was transferred fromBritain to Spain in 1883.

Most of all, perhaps, he was passionate about GrayGoose, his thoroughbred iron gray mare.

It was the desire of an American officer to own themare that resulted in McGirth shifting from support toscourge of the Americans.

This captain tried to buy her from McGirth, offer-ing him a large price. But McGirth refused to part withher.

This angered the captain who, out of spite, mis-treated McGirth in petty ways. McGirth was so irritat-ed that one day he insulted the officer and raised hisarm to strike him.

He was tried by court martial and sentenced toreceive ten lashes on his bare back three days in suc-cession. The first whipping was administered and hewas put in the guard house to await his second humili-ation.

About twilight, through his prison bars he spiedGray Goose, hitched to a tree not far away. He gave alow peculiar whistle and Gray Goose, recognizing thesignal, raised her beautiful head and uttered an affec-tionate whinny in response. This was more than hecould stand.

With a broken trowel he found in his cell, andwith his bare hands, he tore the masonry from aroundthe prison bars, squeezed through the narrow crack, and sprang on Gray Goose. The guards called to himto halt, but he only shook his fist at them, yelled acurse, and dashed away in the darkness, heedless ofthe musket balls that whistled about his head.

He deserted to the enemy and to the end of thewar fought ferociously against the Americans.

After the war he went to Florida, now owned bythe Spaniards. For some offense or crime there he wasarrested and thrown into prison in the old fort of StAugustine.

After five years imprisonment he was released soweak and broken in health that he could barely draghimself back to his wife in their rude country home inSumter District, South Carolina There he soon died inpeace and now lies buried.

Don’t Get Caught Drinkin and Drivin One day, two rednecks named Bubba and Earl were

driving down the road, drinking a couple of cold beers. The passenger, Bubba, said “Lookey thar up aheadEarl, it’s a po-leece roadblock!

We’re gonna get busted fer drinkin’ these herebeers!”

“Don’t worry Bubba,” Earl said. “We’ll just pullover and finish drinkin’ these beers, peel off the labeland stick it on our foreheads, then throw the bottlesunder the seat.”

“What fer?” asked Bubba.“Just let me do the talkin’, okay?” said Earl. They

finished their beers, threw the empty bottles under theseat and slapped the labels on their foreheads.

When they reached the roadblock, the sheriff said,“Have you boys been drinking?”

“No sir,” said Earl, “we’re on the patch.”

Love may be blind but marriage is a real eye-opener.

Idiot at the Airport I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, “Has anyone put anything in

your baggage without your knowledge?” To which I replied, “If it was without my knowledge, how would Iknow? “ He smiled knowingly and nodded, “That’s why we ask.”
