  • 1. John Pangilinan FLVS Biology 6/1/14 04.06 Segment 1 Collaboration Part One AND Part Two Directions: If you are unable to attend a live collaboration session, this activity will allow you to get credit for the Segment 1 Collaboration Project. Fill out the RED sections of this activity sheet. 1. Compare a plant or animal cell to something in the real world. Example: A plant or animal cell is like a city! When you think of a cell, what analogy comes to mind? Is it like a school, a shopping mall, a theme park, the Internet, a factory, a county fair, an airport, a zoo, a video game, a bus station, a solar system? Decide which of the above items youll compare a cell to: I say the Plant or the animal cell is like a factory because inside the cells they have other cells that functions and the size of it looks like a county fair. When I think of cell I think of these types of things that come to my mind. 2. Justify your analogy. Example: A plant cell is like a city because a city has an infrastructure that keeps it running smoothly. This infrastructure also protects the people who live in the city from harm. This is similar to the structure of a cell, which allows the cell to run smoothly while also protecting the organelles inside of it. Write a brief statement (like the example above) justifying your comparison: A cell is like a factory because the main purpose of the factory cannot be used to its fullest extent without all the smaller cells (workers) doing their job safely and efficiently and cohesively working together for the greater good. 3. Incorporate 3 organelles. Select 3 organelles from the list below and incorporate them into your analogy.

2. Cell membrane Golgi apparatus Nucleus Lysosome Cytoplasm Vacuole Cytoskeleton Mitochondrion Ribosome Cell wall Rough ER Chloroplast Smooth ER Example: The lysosome is like the city dump because lysosomes dispose of cell wastes using specialized enzymes within a protected membrane, just as the city dump disposes of garbage from households within the city. Organelle #1 the ribosome are like workers in the factory because proteins are built here, just as a product would be built on an assembly line with workers Organelle #2 the vacuole is like the packaging department because the vacuole stores things just as they would be in a package. Organelle #3 A Cell Wall is like a sturdy fence because the cell wall protects the structure from harm. 4. Post your work in the Discussion Groups of the class. Date you posted your 3 organelles in the Discussion Groups: 6/1/14 5. Grab (copy) 6 different organelles. Copy 6 different organelles from other students posts. You may ONLY choose people who have done the same analogy as you. You can use 2 or 3 organelles from the same student IF they are not organelles youve already done. REPLY to the students whose work you borrow! Paste below: Organelle #4: The Vacuole is like the parking lot of the airport because vacuoles serve as a storage function to keep things there long term, like the cars that are parked by vacationers for a long period of time. Student who posted it (if no name listed, just say Ghost Student): Olivia Sciandra Date student posted it: 4/22/14 Organelle #5: Nucleus- The nucleus is like the manager of the plant. It contains the genetic information that the cell needs to do its job. The manager of the factory has all of the detail for how the factory needs to run to be productive. Student who posted it (if no name listed, just say Ghost Student): Kathryn Taylor Date student posted it: 4/17/14 3. Organelle #6: Cell Wall- The cell wall is just like the physical walls of the factory that keep it supported, protected and maintains the shape of the factory. The cell wall on the plant cell also gives it structure, support and protection. Student who posted it (if no name listed, just say Ghost Student): Kathryn Taylor Date student posted it: 4/17/14 Organelle #7: Mitochondria is like the food court because the mitochondrion breaks down nutrients to provide energy to the cell, just like a food court makes food to give energy to the people whom are flying and need energy. Student who posted it (if no name listed, just say Ghost Student): Kathryn Taylor Date student posted it: 4/17/14 Organelle #8: Nucleus is like the information and directions board at the front of the county fair like in plant and animal cells the nucleus contains all the information in the cell. Student who posted it (if no name listed, just say Ghost Student): Kaythryn Taylor Date student posted it : 4/17/14 Organelle #9: The cytoskeleton is like the airplane gates and layout of the airport because the cytoskeleton gives the cell shape and direction, much like the various airport gates and layout of the airport to give direction in the airport. Student who posted it (if no name listed, just say Ghost Student): Olivia Sciandra Date student posted it: 4/22/14 6. Evaluate this activity. Why did you choose this activity over the live collaboration session? I chose this activity because I like to learn about cells. What I like about to learning about cells is that I get to know a lot of information about their function. I would also say that learning about cells is a lot fun when you work with other students. 7. Evaluate yourself and your peers. Rate yourself and any students you worked with in the Discussion Groups. 3 = above average 2 = average 1 = below average 4. Peer and Self-Evaluation Chart Criteria YOU Student from Discussion Groups Student from Discussion Groups Student from Discussion Groups Student from Discussion Groups Student from Discussion Groups Completed assigned task 3 3 3 3 3 3 Posted to the Discussion Groups 3 3 3 3 3 3 Stayed on topic 3 3 3 3 3 2 Offered relevant information 3 3 3 3 3 3 Completed work adequately 3 3 3 3 3 3 Replied to students in Discussion Groups 3 3 3 3 3 3 8. Reflect. What did you enjoy most about this assignment? What I enjoy about this assignment is that I get to compare the cells to real life things. It helps me gain a lot of comprehension of analogy and it helps me how the cell is like and what is their function. Do you feel others will be happy with what you posted in the Discussion Groups? I Would say yes because they get to know a lot from analogies and it helps their comprehension. Submit this activity sheet in 2 different places: 04.06 Segment 1 Collaboration Part One and 04.06 Segment 1 Collaboration Part Two in the ASSESSMENTS tab!
