TEORI, PRAKTIS DAN CABARAN PENERBITAN ATAS TALIAN

Akmar Hayati Ahmad Ghazali, Rahmawati Nurdin

Jabatan Komunikasi, Fakulti Bahasa Moden dan Komunikasi, Universiti Putra Malaysia

[email protected]

INDIA’S GEO-POLITICAL INTERESTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA MARITIME AREA

Fadhilah Raihan Lokman, Siti Noor Amyah Khasbullah School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Taylors University

Abstract

India has a deep and long history with Southeast Asia nations. There were numerous evidences of interactions happening between India and Southeast Asia nations that dated back to early centuries. Early kingdoms in Southeast Asia region had trading activities with Indian merchants; plus there were also religious missionaries going back and forth from India. This paper discusses the expansion of India’s Look East policy to Southeast Asia maritime area. The vibrant India-ASEAN relationship is related to the India’s geopolitical interests in Southeast Asia maritime area. Ensuring good relationship with individual ASEAN states and ASEAN organization brought India to a new level of cooperation. Maritime cooperation is crucial as it reflects trading relations with the companionship of Indian Navy in Southeast Asia maritime. India is pushing for a stronger engagement with ASEAN. From the discussion and finding, India is pushing for a deeper engagement with ASEAN. The fact that ASEAN is a very exclusive organization allowed India to participate in East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum. However, there is a need for deeper economic integration and calls for mutual understanding. India and ASEAN still have to exert their best efforts in promoting preventive diplomacy and strategic restraint in their shared maritime domain. India is also facing internal conflicts that urge India to focus more on domestic issues. Keywords: India; geo–political interest; Southeast Asia; maritime

INTEGRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE OF MUSLIM CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: DILEMMA AND POSSIBILITY

Adnan Abd Rashid

International Islamic University Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract

Generally Muslim intellectuals lay down that the dissemination of knowledge in the Islamic educational system is not merely concerned with the material and physical life in this world, but also with life in the next world. The concepts “read” “teach” and “pen,” in the earliest revelation show to us that Allah has illustrated the process of gaining knowledge and testified that in seeking knowledge must be integrated and reflected to tawhidic paradigm (In the Name of your Lord). The integrated knowledge was continued in the period of the Four Caliphs and was expanded in the period of the Islamic rulers; Ummayyads, Abbasids, Fatimiyyah and Islamic rulers in Spain across their part of the world, particularly in the period called the “Golden Age”. However, Western secular knowledge then fused into the Muslim world during the emergence of Western colonialisation which resulted in a clash of morals and values in the Muslim world. Western secular knowledge, with its absence of harmony between the modern sciences and religious values, has actually been harmful, and has created a dilemma to the Muslim world. This atmosphere of knowledge is a great challenge in preserving the qualities of Muslims, particularly their moral character and their identity as well, because secularist ideology denounces religious principles as the basis of individual development. Nowadays, in order to bring Integrated knowledge into existence, the whole of the secular knowledge needs to be reviewed, studied, researched and reoriented from the Islamic view point on the basis of divine guidance. With this approach, integrated knowledge enables Muslim to cultivate his mode of thought and to generate a noble character as well as belief in Allah. This concept paper will discuss how the dilemma of Muslim world with the dissemination of Western secular knowledge and how integrated knowledge able to preserve and develop good character of Muslim individual and the ummah.

Keywords: Integrated knowledge; Western secular knowledge; dilemma of Muslims World and noble character

TOWARDS LEARNING ENGLISH

Emily Uding Jerang, Maslawati Mohamad, Melor Md Yunus Faculty of Education

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract

Attitude and motivations are the two important elements in a student to master a second language. Lacking of these two major element are the root of the main problem of the low English proficiency among the rural secondary students in Sarawak, Malaysia. This study was carried out to investigate the rural secondary school students’ in Sarawak, Malaysia on their attitude and motivations towards the learning of English language. The study was conducted at a secondary school in Sarawak. The participants of this research study were 30 secondary school students of different races who speak various languages as their mother tongue. The participants comprised of 18 females and 12 males. Though English is not their first language, these are students who are exposed to the English language since their primary school years or even at home. The students are exposed to English lessons in the classrooms which help them to improve in English language. A set of 40 items questionnaire was designed and distributed in order to gain data from the respondents. The findings indicate that the students are aware of the importance of English language for their future undertaking. The findings also show that the students are more geared towards extrinsic than intrinsic motivational goals in second language learning as they aim for better grades and achievements, credits, performance incentives and good future jobs. In a nutshell, some recommendations were provided to further increase students’ motivations and attitudes towards learning the English, the implication and some recommendations on future research. Abstract

Professional Learning Communities (PLC) has been integrated in Malaysian schools in 2011. This is a program under the collaboration between Teachers’ Education Department and Aminuddin Baki Institute. It has become the core part of the teaching and learning in classroom. It is part of ensuring the education development improves in the National Key Results Area (NKRA). It enables teaching and learning to involve the communities outside of the school to take part. Activities that have been utilized under PLC is team teaching, lesson demonstration, Buddy-support system, collaborative teaching and lesson study. The strategies to implement PLC are Peer coaching, Learning Walk and Sharing Sessions. It is very important to look further into the implementation of PLC and the challenges faced by teachers. If PLC is a success, it gives a positive impact in the academic results. THE PROMOTION OF TEACHERS’ CAPACITY IN ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING: LESSONS FROM THAILAND AND NEW ZEALAND

Natcha Mahapoonyanonta, Jenny Poskittb, Sally Hansenb

a Thaksin University, Thailand

b Massey University, New Zealand

Abstract

Educational quality is the most important goal for managing the educational system of the nation that expects schools are proficient and prepared to evenly and thoroughly provide an educational service to its people. Modern education reform began in Thailand with the 1999 National Education Act, which was Thailand’s first education reform legislation. The results from educational reform for the first ten years have seen that the educational quality of the country has still not yet reached the target. As we have heard about one study that triggered interest in raising students’ learning achievements by using assessment concepts in classes among academic experts throughout the world is the “Inside the Black Box: Raising Standards through Classroom Assessment ” study by Black and William in 1998 who found formative assessments to have an effect size of 0.40 – 0.70 on capabilities and learning achievement. Therefore, teacher improvement models concerning assessment for learning are an interesting topic of study. In addition we have known that New Zealand’s education is interesting because New Zealand is classified as one of the ten countries with the best education in the world. Furthermore, the aforementioned country gave importance to education from a shared belief that “education is an important foundation in national economic and social development”. So we learn a lesson from the two countries.

MUET LISTENING SKILLS

Shahirah Sulaiman, Nur Safura Abd Ghaffar, Raimizar Rahim, Azizah Abdul Majid

Pusat Tamhidi Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia

[email protected]

Abstract

The Malaysian University English Test (MUET) has been fully implemented in the year 2000 by the Ministry of Education to equip the students with the necessary English language skills to be used in tertiary level education in Malaysia. These skills are pertinent not just for the sake of passing the examination but also to equip the students with English medium instructions in the classrooms at the tertiary level as to help them secure a place in universities. The four basic skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) may sound manageable to learn but there are still gaps in students’ competency of the language which disrupt their competency, especially in their listening skill. Current researches show that students are not adequately prepared with listening strategies and listening comprehension instruction in the classroom. Thus, this study intends to investigate 60 undergraduate students’ strategies as Predicting, Inferring and Selective Attention in listening tasks. A quantitative approach was employed with the use of a questionnaire as the instrument. The findings confirmed that a majority of the students adopted steadily these three strategies in their listening skills. This result may help to increase the basic listening competency and cognitive abilities among the students and thereby ultimately enhance their learning strategies of MUET at tertiary level. Keywords: Listening skills; MUET; tertiary education

Abstract

In the last few decades, entrepreneurship has garnered the attention of researchers, educators and policymakers. It has been viewed as a catalyst for economic progress, development and employment on a global setting. University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) has envisioned to be a leading technopreneurial university, thus a number of entrepreneurial courses have been offered to students as a way to produce graduates who are equipped with the ability to set up or venture into new own businesses. This study aims to investigate the driving factors that promote inclination towards entrepreneurship among UniKL MICET students during their enrolment, even before they graduate. The aspects to be examined are within the realms of psychological environment, personal trait environment, personal objective and the university’s role of encouragement. A set of questionnaire using the Likert scale was distributed to 120 UniKL MICET students who have taken up entrepreneurial subjects. It is hoped that the findings will offer discernment on areas that can further increase students’ inclination toward entrepreneurship once they have graduated.

MENANGANI SALAH FAHAM TERHADAP HADITH DA‘IF: SATU ANALISIS

Mohd Farhan Md Ariffin, Khadher Ahmad, Ahmad Za‘im Sabirin Mohd

Yusoff Akademi Pengajian Islam

Universiti Malaya [email protected]

Abstrak

Hadith da‘if merupakan hadith bersatus lemah. SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

Muslihah Hasbullah, Rojanah Kahar, Sa’odah Ahmad Department of Human Development & Family Studies,

Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putra Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract

Domestic violence is a worldwide problem that occurs across diverse cultures, ethnics, religions, income groups, and geographical locations. In an attempt to face hardships and end the violence, more women nowadays are willing to speak out their abusive situation and seeking help from either formal or informal support. Formal support refers to public authorities such as welfare agencies, the police, the legal system, private medical or psychological organizations, and non-profit organizations like women’s shelters. Informal support on the other hand, consists of family members, friends, neighbours, co-workers and spiritual leaders. A large body of research demonstrates the significant impact of informal supports to the survivors’ well-being. This study has been done with the aim to assess the instrumental, social, and emotional support for domestic violence survivors in terms of perceived informal support, utilization of the support, satisfaction and need for informal support. The data collection was carried out in Selangor. Structured interviews have been conducted with ten survivors using the Arizona Social Support Interview Schedule (Barrera, 1980). Result shown that the survivors perceived informal supports were available particularly among family members and friends. However, they were more frequently utilized support from their friends compared to family members. Additionally, most of the survivors were also satisfied with all the supports they received from their informal networks and they were in great need of such supports. Among the six categories of supports measured, material aid was considered as the main source of support for the survivors. It can be concluded that the availability of informal support

THE STRUGGLE FOR WOMEN EDUCATION IN SWAT PAKISTAN:

AN ANALYSIS OF “I AM MALALA”: A NOVEL BY MALALA YOUSAFZAI

Muhammad Nasir Fakultas Psikologi

UIN Ar-Raniry, Indonesia [email protected]

Abstract

The importance of education for a woman is not only to gain equality and avoid harassment, but rather to establish the political power, although she must fight the authority and Taliban’s challenges. So, it is with education, because education is the obligation and the right of human beings, even though there was the strongest challenge from Taliban. Through this essay the writer will describe Malala’s struggles for women’s right concerning education in the Swat Province of Pakistan. The writer also aims to find out her ways in struggling by using the concept of feminist criticism, especially Gynocriticism pioneered by Elaine Showalter. The first is the examination of female writers and their place in literary history. The second is the consideration of the treatment of the female characters in books by both male and female writers. The third and most important aspect of gynocriticism is the discovery and exploration of a canonical literature written by women. However, in this essay the writer will base his analysis only on the second aspect; ‘feminist’ phase, namely criticizing the role of women in society and the oppression of women. So, all the treatments and oppression against women can be identified closely and clearly. Keywords: Struggle; education and women

MALAYSIA

Rozita Wahab, Mariani Mansor Faculty of Human Ecology Universiti Putra Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract

The concept of emotional intelligence is gaining wide attention among researchers in social science. However, most of the previous studies focused more on the students or teenagers in general. Therefore, this study was conducted specifically among delinquents who were undergoing rehabilitation program in the rehabilitation institutions. The main objective of this study was to examine the correlation of social support and emotional intelligence among delinquents in government rehabilitation institutions in Malaysia. Respondents involved in this study were 203 Malay delinquents aged between 11 to 19 years old that were randomly selected from six different rehabilitation institutions in Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur (WPKL), Selangor and Malacca. Respondent’s emotional intelligence was measured through the Assessing Emotional Scale (AES; Schutte, Malouff, Hall, Haggerty, Cooper, Golden, & Dornheim, 1998), while social support was assessed using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farley, 1988). Results showed that majority of Malay delinquents in the rehabilitation institutions have moderate level of emotional intelligence and have high level of social support. Besides that, result also showed that social support was significantly correlated with emotional intelligence (r=0.527, p<0.01) of delinquents in the rehabilitation institutions. Meanwhile, T-test analysis indicated that there were no significant differences for social support and emotional intelligence across gender. Abstract

Malaysia is focusing very much on education especially in coping with the development of human capital. As the literacy of human capital is an important element to guarantee the success of a nation, the needs and wants of aboriginal groups or also known as “orang asli” have never been forgotten to be acknowledged in our New Economic Policy. Yet, there are still loopholes that need to be discussed due to less favorable results towards the achievement of these Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli. Therefore, the researchers were expected to look into the main factors that contributed to the low level achievement of Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli in higher education. A set of survey questions was designed to explore the contributing factors to the low level achievement of these Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli. The designed survey was simple but included the important criteria to meet the research objective. In addition, a wide coverage of Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli in Pahang covering ten (10) districts have been selected as our samples to represent and generalize the Aboriginal Group / Orang Asli population in Malaysia. The districts are Kuantan, Pekan, Rompin, Temerloh, Bentong, Raub, Jerantut, Kuala Lipis, Cameron Highlands and Maran. There were numerous types of ‘Suku Kaum” or group types of Aboriginal Group / Orang Asli involved in this survey and a total of 930 respondents have successfully given their cooperation to this research and made the set of survey questions usable. A simple descriptive analysis was run for the purpose of result presentation to discover the factors that need to be taken care of by respective agencies and society. Abstract

Aboriginal community means the members of one aboriginal ethnic group living together in one place. According to the Orang Asli Affairs Department (JHEOA), there are about 141,230 Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia. The Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 states that Aborigines shall not be excluded from any school. One purposes of this act is to provide the establishment of schools in aboriginal areas, aboriginal reserves and aboriginal inhabited places, and to prescribe the curricula and qualifications of the teachers in the schools. In addition, the Malaysian Government has taken a lot of actions to enhance the development of the Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli. JHEOA under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development has played important roles in empowering the socio-economic development of the Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli. These can be seen through RMK-7, RMK-8, RMK-9 and RMK-10. Therefore, this study was to explore the Aboriginal Groups / Orang Asli’s main expectations pertaining to the importance of their educational achievement. TAILGATING IN MALAYSIA: MARITAL STATUS MATTERS

Ahmad Azad Ab Rashid Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research

[email protected]

Abstract

The study adopted a self-report measure to investigate tailgating, or close following, among drivers in Malaysia. Responses from 240 participants revealed that age, gender, marital status and monthly income are significant predictors: younger, male and single drivers are more likely to closely follow front vehicles when driving. A further scrutiny of influence of gender-marital status interaction on tailgating tendency, after controlling for age, revealed noteworthy results: marital status moderates the tendency to tailgate only among male drivers. In other words, male-single drivers have the highest tendency to tailgate relative to not only female (regardless being single or married) drivers, but also more importantly to male-married drivers. Potential explanation for the results is discussed. Keywords: Tailgating; close following; marital status; risky driving

School of Tourism, Hospitality & Environmental Management University Utara Malaysia [email protected]

Abstract

Community-based homestay programme has been identified by the Government as a platform to develop rural community in Malaysia. Local community participation is essential for the success and sustainability of the homestay programme. Lack of participation among the local people may lead to a failure of this programme since community-based homestay requires local people to work together. Thus, there is a need to identify the limitations to community participation. This paper focuses on the factors that prevent community members from participating in the homestay program. Semi-structured interviews were conducted among the non-participant of the homestay programme. Eight respondents were selected based on snowball sampling technique. The findings reveal that most of the limitations relate to organizational and cultural limitations. Lack of communication, age factor, unsatisfactory health condition and personal characteristics were found to limit community participation. The findings will help to address the lack of participation issue in the homestay programme by providing a better guidelines for a participatory approach. AMBIVALENT SEXISM IN LLOYD FERNANDO’S GREEN IS THE COLOUR

Siti Hawa Muhamad, Zamila Abdul Rani, Siti Masitah Md Zin

Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor [email protected]

Abstract

The sexism theory as proposed by Peter Glicke and Susan T. Fiske (1996) presented the idea of ambivalent sexism that is divided into two correlated components; hostile sexism that embodies the typical definition of prejudice and sexism towards women, and benevolent sexism, characterized by men’s prosocial behavior towards women, yet this behavior relegated the women to their stereotypical and restricted roles. Glicke and Fisk proposed three shared components that made up hostile sexism and benevolent sexism; paternalism, gender differentiation and heterosexuality, and developed the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI) to measure the individual level of ambivalent sexism through quantitative study. Our analysis however, being textual in nature, is borrowing the three components suggested by these scholars, and applying them as factors to analyze the narrative of Lloyd Fernando’s novel, in term of how much ambivalent sexism is faced by the female protagonist, Siti Sara. Keywords: Ambivalent sexism; hostile sexism; benevolent sexism
