    Novec1230TM(1,1,1,2,2,4,5,5,5-NONAFLUORO-4-(Trifluoromethyl)-3-Pentanone),theextinguishingagentusedinallFire-Hawk“NFG”and“NFD”seriesfiresuppressionsystems,isasuitableEPAacceptedalternatereplacementforHalon.Novecisanelectricallynonconductiveandresiduefreeextinguishingagentthatrequiresnocleanup.Novec1230TMisalsoreferredtoasFK-5-1-2(dodecaflouro-2-methylpentan-3-one),afluoroketone.

    Thesefeaturesandtheversatilityofdesignmakethe“NFG”and“NFD”seriesfiresuppressionsystemmodelsidealforabroadrangeofapplications.Theseapplicationswouldincludecommercialandindustrialusewhereelectricalorflammableliquidsarethelikelysourceoffire.Fire-Hawk“NFG”and“NFD”serieshavepassedarigidtestingprogramandcarryFactoryMutual(FMGlobal)approvalsforfiresuppressionapplicationsinmanyapplicationssuchasunoccupiedengineandgeneratorrooms,electricalandcomputerrooms,paintandflammablestoragelockers.

    Limitations

    Fire-Hawk“NFG”and“NFD”modelseriesNovecautomaticfiresuppressionsystemsaredesignedandtestedtoextinguishClassB(flammableliquid)firesinenclosedroomsonly.

    Theprotectedspace(room)limitationsare:MinimumHeight:2Feet(.6m)MaximumHeight:14FT(4.3m)MaximumWidth:32FT(9.75m)

    Anyopenings(doorsorpanels)willallowdischargingagenttoescapeandwillseriouslyaffecttheabilityofagenttoextinguishthefire.

    Fire-Hawk“NFG”and“NFD”suppressionsystemsaredesignedtoinduceaminimumatmosphericconcentrationof5.85percentwithintheprotectedroom.Thisisequivalenttoa30%safetyfactorona4.5%MinimumExtinguishingConcentration(MEC).Inadditiontogasolineanddieselfuel,otherflammableliquidswithMECvaluesequaltoorbelow4.5%forNovec1230TMmaybeprotectedbyFire-Hawk“NFG”and“NFD”systems.

    Thespecificationtablesinthismanuallisttheminimumandmaximumapprovedroomvolume(size)allowableforeachmodel(perNFPA2001,UL2166,FM5600*).Volumecanbedeterminedbymultiplyingtheroom’slengthxwidthxheightwhichequalsthevolumeincubicfeetormeters(LxWxH=V).*NFPA2001:StandardonCleanAgentFireExtinguishingSystems;UL2166:HalocarbonCleanAgentExtinguishingSystemUnits;FM5600:ApprovalStandardforCleanAgentExtinguishingSystemsModelsdescribedinthismanualarestockavailablein25CubicFeet(0.7Cubicmeters)intervals.Systemsareavailablein1CubicFeet(0.03Cubicmeters)intervalsifdesired.Exactcalculationsand/ormeasurementsoftheprotectedspaceshouldbeaccomplishediforderingthesemodels.TheSpecificationTableshowstheareaofprotectionrangeavailablefororderingwithineachbasicmodel.Forsimplicity,throughoutthismanual,onlythestocksizeswillbenoted.

    NFGandNFDsystemsaredesignedforonlyonecylinder(singlenozzle)toprotecttheentirespace.Usingtwocylinderstoachievecombinedcoverageisnotacceptable.

    SystemOperations

    Fire-HawkunitsdescribedinthismanualareautomaticallyactuatedbyatemperaturesensitiveULlistedglassbulbtestedinaccordancewithUL199.Thesebulbsaremanufacturedandtestedtobeactivatedataminimumtemperatureofapproximately175°F(79°C)whenimmersedinaliquidbathorapproximately220°F(104°C)whentestedusinganairbath.Theactualactivationtemperatureofthebulbinafirescenarioisinfluencedbynumerousfactorsincludingairvelocity,rateoftemperaturerise,airflow,location,etc.Thedischargetemperatureranges(approximate)areshowninthespecificationtable,pages20–21,andonthelabelattachedtoeachunit.ThesesystemshavebeentestedtoUnitedStatesCoastGuard(USCG),UL2166andFM5600requirementsforAutomaticExtinguisherUnitAutomaticOperationFireTests.*UL199:StandardforSafetyofAutomaticSprinklersforFireProtectionService.DischargeTemperatureRanges(approximate):NFG25–75:200 - 250°F(93-121 °C)NFG100–200:175-225°F(79–107°C)NFD225–1800:175-225°F(79-107°C)

    Note:Itisimportanttoretainthedesignedvaporconcentrationwithintheroomtoinsurecompletefireoutage.Upondischarge,engines,generators,equipmentandallpoweredventilation(HVAC)mustbeshutdown.

    SupervisoryPressureSwitch

    Fire-Hawk“NFG”and“NFD”seriessuppressionsystemsareequippedwithafactoryinstalledpressureswitchwhichisintendedforcylinderpressuremonitoringandsupervisionandmayalsobeusedtocontrolotherelectricalfunctions(engineshutdown,airexchangeequipmentetc.).Whenusingthepressureswitchasanelectricaldisconnectforanyequipmentshutdownfunction,ameansofoverriding(bypassing,shunting)thepressureswitchmustbeprovidedinordertoreturntheaffectedequipmenttoanoperationalmodeaftersuppressionsystemdischargehasoccurred.Thepressureswitchisasinglepolesinglethrow(SPST)typethatisnormallyclosed(NC)withthesysteminthechargedcondition.Dischargeorlossofsystempressurewillreleasethecontactstoanopenstatetherebycuttingoffanyelectricalcurrentflow.Neverusepressureswitchforelectricalloadsoverratedcapacity.

    SystemStatusIndicatorLightOperation

    AllFire-Hawkpre-engineeredfiresuppressionsystemsarepackagedwithanindicatorlightandfaceplate.Systemapprovalrequiresthattheindicatorlight(unlessreplacedbyanotherFire-Hawkdevice:i.e.:displaypanel)mustbeinstalledforsystemsupervisionandoperatorawareness.Whenproperlyinstalled,activationofelectricalpowertothesystemwillilluminatethelightindicatingnormalchargecondition.Systemdischargeorlossofpressurewillimmediatelyturnofftheindicatorlight.Intheeventthattheindicatorlightisnotlitwhenpowerisapplied,checkforthefollowingconditions:

    1. Checkpressureindicatorgaugeforproperrange.2. Checkfuseandindicatorlightandreplaceifdefective(lampreplacementsavailablefrom

    factory).3. Checkforlooseelectricalconnections.4. RemoveandweighsystemcylinderasdescribedinSystemMaintenanceSectionofthe

    manual.

    PressureReliefAssembly(BurstDisk)

    Allmodelsareprotectedfromoverpressureofsystem.NFGModels25–200andNFD225–825areprotectedbythedesignoftheglassbulbtemperature/pressurerelationship.Fire-HawkmaintainsaDepartmentofTransportation(DOT)SpecialPermit,DOT-SP-11598forthesemodels.

    NFDModels850–1800haveadefinitepurposePressureReliefDevice(designedandmanufacturedperCGAS.1-1)installedonthemanifold.Donotremoveorperformanymaintenanceonthisdevice.Removingorlooseningthisdevicewillcausethecontentsunderpressuretoescape.

    InteractionwithEngines,GeneratorsandPoweredVentilation(HVAC)

    Fire-Hawkoffersoptionalcircuitinterruptsystemswhichwillautomaticallyshutdownrelayswhichmaybeusedtocontroldevicessuchasengines,generatorsandpoweredventilation(HVAC)upondischargeofthefiresuppressionsystem.Theyareavailablewith4,6or8controlcircuitsandoperatebetween9–32voltsDC.Shutdownmaybeaccomplishedbyinterruptionoftheelectricalcircuitpoweringthedevice.Relaycontactsareprovidedinnormallyopen(NO)andnormallyclosed(NC)states.Itistheresponsibilityofthesystemdesigner/installertocomplywiththefollowinginstructionsonDieselandGasolineEngines/Generatorsthattakeinairfromtheroom.

    DieselEnginesorGenerators,PoweredVentilation(HVAC)

    Thesystemshallbedesignedandinstalledsothattheengine(s),generator(s),andventilationlocatedintheprotectedspaceshutdownautomaticallyandafterdischargetheminimumrequireddesignconcentration(5.85percentNovec1230)mustremain.

    GasolineEnginesorGeneratorsItisoptionaltoautomaticallyshutdowngasolineenginesandgenerators,butitishighlyrecommended.Inthecaseofengineroomfire,youmuststillmanuallyshutdownengine(s)orgenerator(s)beforeamanualdischarge,orimmediatelyafterautomaticdischargeofthefiresuppressionsystem.

    followthesamecablepathasinstalledbyoriginalinstaller(ifareplacementcable).b. Routethecabletoallowittolieinitsmostnaturalstate.Thecumulativebendinthecablerun

    mustneverexceed720degrees.Thisisequivalenttoeight(8)right(90°)angles.Useextremecarewhenbendingcabletoavoidkinking.Neverformabendwitharadiusoflessthanfive(5)inches(127mm).SelectionofthecorrectsizeFire-Hawkcablelengthwillreduceexcesscablecoil.

    c. Positionthecableinitsrouting,butdonotsecureatthistime.Steps3Athru3Fmustbecompletedpriortosecuringcableinitsfinallocation.• Donotconnectcabletothecylinderatthistime

    b. Removetheprotectivebackingfromthefaceplate.Whilealigningtheholes,placeevenpressureuponthefaceplate.Toinsureagoodbond,thetemperatureshouldbeinexcessof50°F(10°C).

    c. FollowingthediagraminFigure4,installthejamnutandlockwasheronthecableend–outer.Screwthejamnuttotheendofthethreads.Insertthecableendthroughthepanelandfaceplatehole.Pullthecableend–inner(threadedshaft)outtoitsfullesttravel.Installferrulebyscrewingontothecableend–outeruntilitbottomsout.Usepliersonthebackside–holdingthecableend–outerwhileturningtheferrule.Useplierswithrubbertipsorothernon-scratchinggrip.Donotovertighten.

    d. Withcableend–inner(threadedshaft)outtoitsfullesttravel,placerubberO-ringoverthreadsonshaft.Holdthecableend-innerfromrotatingusingthesafetypinincrosshole(seeFigure4–Page11)orbyusingneedlenosepliers.InstalltheT-Handleonthecableend–inner,screwingitonuntilitbottomsout.Donotovertighten.
