Up and Running

1.Ensurethewetbulb’swickisclean.Then,fillthereservoirwithdistilledwater.

2.PlacetheWB-300intheworkareainasafelocationapproximately3.5feetofftheground.

3.TurntheinstrumentOnbypressingI/OEnterkey.• Ifthebatteryvoltagedisplayedduringthepower-onsequenceislessthanorequalto6.4volts,replaceorrechargethebatteries.

4.UsingtheArrowkeys,selectthedesiredmeasurement/parameterscreen.

5.Allow10minutesforthesensorstostabilizetotheenvironmentbeforetakingreadings.

Check wick and fill natural wet bulbTheWB-300usesacottonwickimmersedintoareservoircontainingdistilledwater.Ordinarytapwatershouldnotbeused,asthecontaminantsthatareleftbehindafterevaporationwillshortenthelifeofthewickandcausehighreadings.Ifthewickisdiscoloreditshouldbereplaced.Toreplacethewick,slidetheoldwickoffthetopofthesensor.Placeanewwickoverthesensor,makingsurethatthebottomofthewickisdowninthereservoir.

Sensors

Natural Wet Bulb Thermometer Thenaturalwetbulbthermometergivesanindicationoftheeffectsofhumidityonanindividual.Relativehumidityandairflowaretakenintoaccountbymeasuringtheamountofevaporativecoolingtakingplaceatathermometercoveredwithamoistenedwick.TheWB-300usesacottonwickimmersedintoareservoircontainingdistilledwater.Ordinarytapwatershouldnotbeused,asthecontaminantsthatareleftbehindafterevaporationwillshortenthelifeofthewickandcausehighreadings.Ifthewickisdiscoloreditshouldbereplaced.Toreplacethewick,slidetheoldwickoffthetopofthesensor.Placeanewwickoverthesensor,makingsurethatthebottomofthewickisdowninthereservoir.

Globe Thermometer Theglobethermometergivesanindicationoftheradiantheatexposureonanindividualduetoeitherdirectlightorhotobjectsintheenvironment.Thisisaccomplishedbyplacingatemperaturesensorinsideablackenedcoppersphereandmeasuringthetemperaturerise.TheWBGTindexisbasedontheresponseofa6inchdiameterglobe.TheWB-300usesa2inchdiameterglobeforafasterresponsetime.Thetemperatureofthe2inchglobeiscorrelatedtomatchthatofa6inchglobe.Asanoption,asensorarraywitha6inchdiameterglobeisavailable.

Placing the WB-300 on-site for monitoring/testingTheWB-300shouldbeplacedataheightof3.5feet(1.1m)forstandingindividualsor2feet(.6m)forseatedindividuals.Tripodmountingisrecommendedtogettheunitawayfromanythingthatmightblockradiantheatorairflow.A1/4"x20threadedbushingonthebottomoftheinstrumentallowsmountingtoastandardphotographictripod.Donotstandclosetotheunitduringsampling.

Makesurethatthewetbulbreservoirisfilledwithdistilledwaterandthatthecottonwickiscleanandfullywetted.Afteraddingwaterorplacingtheunitinanewenvironment,allowtenminutesfortheglobeandwetbulbreadingstostabilize.

Aseriesofdashesappearinthedisplayifoneofthefollowingoccur:•Thetemperatureisoutsideofitsallowablerange•Atemperaturesensorhasfailed

Operational CheckAverificationmodule,3MID:70071581246,maybeusedtochecktheoperationoftheWB-300.Removethetopsensorbarandplugtheverificationmoduleintothetopoftheunit.WiththeWB-300settoreadindegreesCelsius,verifythatthedisplayedreadingsmatchthoseprintedonthemodulewithin+/-0.5oC.

Ifthereadingsarenotwithinthe+/-0.5oCtolerance,thenhavetheunitservicedandcalibrated.

Power OptionsThereare3optionsforpoweringtheWB-300:a9-voltalkalinebattery,aNiMH(NickelMetalHydride)rechargeable6-cellbatterypack,andanACadapter.Adooronthebackoftheinstru-mentallowstheuseraccesstothe9-voltbattery.Therechargeablebatterypackislocatedinsideoftheunit.Iftherechargeablebatterypackeverneedstobereplaced,itcanbeaccessedbyremovingthescrewsfromthebottompaneloftheunit.

The2-positionswitchlocatedinthebatterycompartmentmustbesetbytheuserifthepowersupplymethodischanged.Theuppositionisforthe9-voltbattery.ThedownpositionallowsforeithertheACadapterortherechargeablebatteries.TheACadapterwilltricklechargetherechargeablebatteriesiftheyareinplaceoritwillsimplyallowforlinepoweroperationoftheunit.

9-V Alkaline Battery Replacement The9-voltbatteryshouldbereplacedortheNiMHbatterypackshouldberechargedwhenthevoltagedropsbelow6.4volts.Thebatteryvoltageisdisplayedwhentheinstrumentisturnedon.Whileturnedon,thebatteryvoltagecanbedisplayedatanytimebypressingtheupordownarrowkeystomovethroughthedisplayuntilthebatteryvoltagescreenappears.If,whileoperating,thebatteryvoltagedropsbelow6.4volts,thedisplaywillautomaticallyswitchtothedisplayshowingthebatteryvoltagealongwithalowbatterymessage.Afteralowbatteryoccurs,theunitwillcontinuetooperateforapproximately8hours.Whenthebatteryvoltagefallsto6.2voltsorbelow,theunitwillautomaticallyturnoff.

NiMH Battery Pack TheNiMHrechargeablebatterypackischargedintheinstrumentusing120VACto9VDCadapter.Adischargedbatterypackrequiresachargeof16hours.LeavingtheACadapterpluggedinforextendedlengthsoftimeorwhenoperatingtheinstrumentwillnotharmtherechargeablebatteries.
