UMTS (Universal Mobile

Telecommunications System)

Access to information from anyplace,anytime.

Based on IMT-2000 standards.

International Telecommunication Union

(ITU)

First 3G network was launched by Japan

in May 2001.

By NTT DoCoMo.

The second network is SK Telecom

of South-Korea in Jan 2002.

First commercial 3G network of US

is Monet Mobile Network.

1G (First Generation)

Analog systems

Implemented in North America During 1940s

Known as Analog Mobile Phone Systems (AMPS)

Designed for voice, not data.

2G (Second Generation)

Digital data signaling.

Effective use of Bandwidth. It expand the range of applications to more

advanced voice services.

Not suitable for web browsing and multimedia

applications.

So there was 2.5G.

3G (Third Generation)

It is improvement over 2G.

High data transfer rates. 144kbps for moving vehicle

384kbps outdoor

2Mbps indoor

Can send large multimedia files

Trial service on 21st April 2008

Commercially on 5th May 2008

By Bhutan Telecom Limited Available only in Core areas of Thimphu.

On March 1st 2012

Phuntsholing was also clubbed with Thimphu At 4 locations.

40 more locations by end of 2012.

Advantages

Interoperability between

service providers.

Fixed and variable datarates.

Backward compatibility of

devices with existing

networks. Rich multimedia services.

Disadvantages

The cost of upgrading base

stations and cellular

infrastructure to 3G is veryhigh.

Requires different handsets

and there is the issue of

handset availability. Base stations need to be

closer to each other (more

cost).

3G is relatively a new Technology

It has high data rates

Most world-widely used

Good range of applications

Provides high security
