During the war, most of the men in each American household left to fight in the war, which left the women and children of the house to help themselves while they await the man’s return. Most women did simple things during this time such as taking care of the children, cooking, and keeping the houses clean. Other women would even become nurses to help the wounded soldiers in battle. But most rare of all, some women would even become spies. They would play the part as a maid or cook, all while eavesdropping on British or American conversations and send secret messages back to their superiors detailing what info they gathered. Although their deeds were huge during the Revolutionary War, women aren’t really looked upon as much. One “Unsung Hero” of the war would be the Quaker, Hannah Blair. Hannah was a revolutionary spy who had a farm where she would hide and protect Patriots, supplied food and medical supplies secretly, mended uniforms and even crafted secret messages. When the loyalists discovered what she was doing, they burnt down her land. However, Congress took care of Hannah, and gave her a pension as compensation for her services to the cause.
