We have a convention this year in Myrtle Beach. I hope that we can make it the

best attended convention in years. We have a lot of business to discuss but just as

important we will have some fun. We will experience the joy of togetherness with old and new friends.

Our gratitude of being part of a great organization thrives. Why – because each and every one of us, puts our

heart into what we do as a member of Sons of Norway and it shows. It shows in your lodge newsletters. It

shows in your faces at your lodge programs. It shows in how members are always willing to lend a helping

hand.

The delegates your lodge elects can shape the future of our organization. Our District Board members will be

elected from the delegates. I have great expectations for our District Nominating Committee; I know we will

have a great slate of prospective Board members. I encourage each and every one of you to think about District

level Board involvement, either as a Board member or perhaps a member of a Board Committee. When the

Nominating Committee calls, don’t hold back. Let them know what role you would like to play in shaping the

future of our District. You are so important to the ongoing success of the District.

Quite simply, the direction of this great 3D Viking ship of ours depends on you. Pick up an oar and get on

Board!!! Feel the power of the force of the 3D.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year! With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays over and as the New Year

approaches we are all making our resolutions. This is a great time to consider and review all the blessings you

have received then think of those who may not be as fortunate. What have you thought about for your New

Year’s Resolution? Is it to increase awareness and funding for the Charitable Trust?

The Third District Charitable Trust has been providing our Brothers and Sisters of District 3, facing financial

challenges, modest support with subsistence and services critical to their physical, social and psychological

well-being for over 40 years.

Our mission is to continue to fund the program and thanks to money from grants, individual and corporate

donations, lodges, estate planning, and fund raisers we are working to this goal. Be a part of this objective. By

State of LOV – Roy Berntsen - LOV Chair

On behalf of the whole LOV Board, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year. By the time you

read this, New Year’s will most likely be over and we all had a great time. I will try to take pictures for

the next issue. It will likewise show you how well LOV looks. We are open for winter weekends and we

had a few booked immediately. You can join a lodge or a family on any weekend booked. Meet

others from around the district and meet families that are soooo supportive of LOV. Barbara and I

plan to be there as often as we can. Remember the ski house is still open and you can try your luck at

cross-country skiing or a walk to the waterfall. The rooms are filling up, so please contact LOV at

vikingland@tds.net or call 1 570-461-3500. There are special plans being made for the weekend.

Please look for LOV Marketing Chair William’s message. It gives you information about the winter

activities available at LOV and in the surrounding areas. Come and enjoy your stay.

We have more great news. Things are really looking good for LOV. The downstairs rooms are all

complete and will be warm (I hope the end rooms will be warmer than in the past years). I have

been in contact with Gary the plumber and Bev almost every day to hear of the progress. The

weather has been holding for the plumbing to get done and Gary told me that even without the

heat in the rooms, the temperature has maintained 50º. That is the temp we put the rooms on when

everyone is gone, so the heat is holding throughout the lodge. I am so glad this will be completed

before the “real” winter comes. It will be a real white winter wonderland. B&G Billy Karpack is

planning a work weekend during the spring and if you would like to join them please contact him or

you can contact me and we will add you to the list of those who already volunteered to work. No job

is too big or too small. We will find a job for everyone who would like to come and work.

The hunters came and remarked how great it was to be back. They had some success, but, the

idea they can come back to a warm room and a good meal is what they look forward to at the end

of the day.

Please keep Marie, our chef extraordinaire, in your prayers and thoughts. Her Mom & Dad were

coming up to surprise her and Paul for Thanksgiving and was in a car accident just a few miles from

her home. She spent some time in the hospital, but, Bev says she is doing much better. With that in

mind, I hope everyone has safe travels during this holiday season.

We still have donations coming in for the heating and for the future of LOV. I know I say this often,

but the generosity of our members is heartwarming and so grateful to all of us on the board. Ole &

Lena Remembers LOV play was a true success. Karen Olsen-Helmold is our “Fundraiser Femme

fatale” who can charm anybody into raising money for a special event. She is great at organizing

and raising, raising, raising funds. There were a lot of characters (and I mean real characters) who

participated in our play. We were told by those in the audience they haven’t laughed that hard in

years. We had all kinds of acts and people lip-synced to the music of that singer, some even knew all

the words. All the songs had “love” in the title. We even had a “Viking Bar” replica. The tickets, raffle

and the donation of $265 given back from Ken Johnson from his winning the 50/50 raffle, all totaled

$2,223 + for LOV and 3D Ltd. on behalf of both, I thank everyone for all their support. There will be

another Zone 1 Viking Auction in April and both the LOV Board and 3D Ltd. thank everyone who

participates. So, if you receive a Christmas gift you will not use or want to clear a closet of new items,

please think of the auction in April. We hope to do well again this time. Again LOV and the 3D Boards

thank you for thinking of us.

We do have a snag in getting to LOV. The single land bridge was under construction for a short

time. There was a detour signage placed and it took you a few extra miles to get there through the

scenic mountains, but, we were advised that it will be open soon. We hope before New Year’s. I

have been on both roads many times, they are typical country roads. Just in case they are not done

before your trip. Just pay attention to the signs. I will keep checking if the bridge is closed and when

it reopens.

Let us all work together to keep it going. “We need to use it or lose it!” Roy

LOV Marketing – William Taylor Greetings all! While we have been experiencing a rather mild winter up until now we all know that could change very quickly and we in the third district are fortunate to have our Cultural and Heritage Center, Land of the Vikings located in the beautiful Endless Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania where we are able to take advantage of the mountains and snow trails for winter fun. Land of the Vikings - some close locations for winter activities What a great time of the year for all Sons of Norway members, their family members and guests to take advantage of our wonderful Cultural and Heritage Center for outdoor winter activities. Even if you are no longer able to participate in these activities, it is a good time to invite your grownup children and your grandchildren to come up and get in on the winter activities in the area of Land of the Vikings. Does your lodge have Heritage Members or a youth group? Why not encourage them to come up to the Land of the Vikings or have your lodge or multiple lodges sponsor a weekend for them. Once they see what a great place it is for enjoying outdoor sports and activities they may become more active Lodge members. Remember, there are miles upon miles of snowmobile trails around the Land of the Vikings areas, so if you have a snowmobile, bring it up with you too. It is also a great place to teach the young ones how to cross country ski and pass on some of that Norwegian outdoor culture. When the day's activities are over and you've filled your stomach with a great meal from the lodge, you can sit around the warm fire in the Viking Ship Lounge drinking hot cocoa and kaffe. Remember Martin Luther King Holiday is a three day weekend for

those of you who have kids. A great time to visit the Land of the Vikings for an extra day of outdoor fun.

December 30 through January 3rd

Check in on Wednesday December 30th and stay a couple of days or right on through the weekend. The bar is stocked

and the rooms will be toasty as Rick and Bev await your arrival. The Legendary Bob Carlson will be your host with plenty of antics and activities throughout the long weekend. The Disc

Gail Martinsen, Cultural Director Usually Hardanger embroidery (Hardangersøm) is embroidered with white thread on

a white even-weave cloth. Counted thread and drawn-thread are the techniques used.

It is a simple needlework which consists of counted thread stitches, drawn thread

work and pulled thread embroidery. (Note: Always capitalize Hardanger, it refers to a

form of embroidery, a place, a fabric and a fiddle.) It is thought that this type of

embroidery was started in ancient Asia and Persia. This form of embroidery was introduced to Italy during the

Renaissance and became Venetian lacework and Reticella. Many varieties of this embroidery traveled to

northern European in the 1700’s. It evolved into Danish & Dutch Hedebo, Scotch Ayshire work & Ruskin

lacework and Norwegian Drawn Work. From 1650 to 1850, it became popular in Norway, it then became

known as Hardangersøm (work from Hardanger). Flax was grown, carded, spun and woven into white fabric

and thread. The fabric and thread were used for bunads, plus other items of clothing and linens for the home.

Norwegians saw a romantic movement in the 1800s encouraging Norwegians from all over Norway to be

interested in studying their traditional folk culture. Soon the style from Hardanger became very popular

throughout Norway. In the beginning they added Hardanger on aprons and shirt collars, but, eventually it was

added to tablecloths and napkins. After a while, each area in Norway had their own style bunad, etc. and more

were decorated with Hardanger. By the 1850s, immigrants from Norway brought Hardanger to America and

Canada. Their descendants combined different colored threads and cloth to the traditional Hardanger, which

gave us today’s contemporary Hardanger. Today many of the books on Hardanger are written by North

Americans authors.

Godt Nytt År! Happy New Year! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Harbour” by John Ajvide Lindqvist

This story starts on a beautiful winter day on the fictitious island of Damarö in the Stockholm archipelago. Since it is a beautiful day, Anders, Cecilia and their 6 year old daughter decide to hike to the lighthouse across the ice covered channel. When they reach the lighthouse, they discover that it is deserted. Anders and Cecilia explore the inside of the lighthouse, but, Maja wants to explore outside. Since no one is around they feel it’s safe to let her. But, she disappears, no footprints in the snow, nothing! It doesn’t appear that she has drowned or was abducted, no one can figure where she went. They return home without Maja and Anders turns to drink and just ruins his life. After 2 years, Anders returns to the island and moves into his family’s home. He soon discovers that Maja’s disappearance isn’t the only odd occurrence that took place on the island! The islanders (including his grandmother) seem to be keeping many secrets about the island. He finds that they are keeping a very deadly secret which he is starting to slowly discover. Upon discovering some of Maja’s toys, Anders starts to realize that someone is trying to communicate with him! His return to Gavesten brings to light many scary events exposing a very strange and frightening connection between the islanders and the sea.

John Ajvide Lindqvist – 12/2/1968

John Ajvide Lindqvist was born on December 2nd, 1968 in Blackeberg, Sweden. It is a suburb of Stockholm. John was raised by his mother in Blackeberg. His father was a commercial fisherman and lived on the coasts of Sweden permanently. John spent his summers with his father and noticed the gulf between the locals and visitors. They used to go fishing for herring together in the summer. Ever since he was around 18 he found a love for the horror novels, such as the writings of Stephen King. As a teen, he performed magic on Västerlånggatan in Stockholm. For the next 12 years John worked as a magician and a comedian. Once he became 32, he tried writing. His first novel “Let the Right One In” was published in 2004. That novel won 60 worldwide awards! Also, John wrote some screen plays for both film and TV. 11 years ago, John’s father drowned and so, the sea has been found to be an evil force in many of his works. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Norwegian Moose

In 2007, there were approximately 120,000 moose found in Norway. Moose are the 2nd largest land animals in North America and Europe! The moose eats a large variety of plants and fruit. In order to maintain their body weight they have to consume about 9,770 calories a day! The moose graze on non-grass vegetation, such as fresh tree shoots, especially from willow and birch trees. The shoots are low in sodium, so, the moose, also, eats a large amount of aquatic plants, like water lilies or pondweed, which fills their need for sodium. In the winter you can find the moose on the sides of the road licking the salt off of the snow and ice. An adult moose typically weighs up to about 790 pounds and eats about 71 pounds of food daily. Normally, the adult moose is 4.6 to 6.9 feet high at the shoulder (a foot higher than a large deer). Moose don’t have front upper teeth, but, they have 8 sharp incisors on their bottom jaw, 6 pairs of large flat molars and 6 pairs of premolars to help grind up their food. The moose‘s tongue, lips and gums are rough, which helps them eat the woody vegetation. Their upper lips are very sensitive to help them feel the difference between fresh shoots and hard twigs and it helps grabbing the food. Plus, it makes it easier for them to grab, pull and strip an entire branch of leaves from a tree in the summer. Moose are great swimmers and often wade into the water to get the aquatic plants and cool off in the summer heat. Also, they can dive underwater to find plant life, their snout helps feeding underwater. Of all the deer species, moose are the only ones capable of feeding underwater. Their nose has fatty pads and muscles that will close while they are experiencing underwater pressure, so water can’t enter their nose. The moose’s antlers have a soft furry covering. Which is called velvet and the blood vessels in the velvet helps the flow of nutrients to help the antlers grow. The size of the antlers is determined by diet and age, plus, it will show the moose’s health. An adult bull’s antlers can be found at a spread larger than 79”. Norwegian and other Scandinavian moose have simpler antlers than the North American moose. The bull drops his antlers after mating season to help him conserve energy in the winter. In the spring they regrow their antlers. They are fully grown back within 3 to 5 months. Antlers are the fastest growing animal organs. By September the bull has removed the velvet from his antlers by rubbing and thrashing, which changes the color of the antlers. Birds, rodents and carnivores eat the dropped antlers for protein and the moose munch on the velvet for the nutrition. Very rarely, a female will grow antlers. The bull breeds with several cows during mating season. After 8 months, each female normally has just one calf, but, if there is plenty of food available they can have twins. The calf will have a reddish brown coat which changes to brown as it grows older. The calf stays with its mother until she is ready to bear her next calf. Their life span is from 15 to 25 years. Moose aren’t aggressive to humans unless they are provoked or scared. But, moose attack humans more often than wolf packs and grizzly bears combined! Of course, a bull is more aggressive during the mating season and females will attack humans who come close to their calves. In northern Europe, you can find paintings in caves and on rocks of moose dating back to the Stone Age. In Alby, Sweden in an excavation they discovered wooden moose antlers in a wooden hut from 6,000 BC. It shows some of the earliest moose hunting in Scandinavia. You can still find trapping pits that were used for moose hunting in Northern Scandinavia. One pit was found in Norway dating back to about 3,700 BC. In 2008, the Aftenposten reported that since 2000 Norwegian trains had killed about 13,000 moose. So, Norway planned to spend 80 million kroner to fence the railways, clear vegetation near the tracks and provide other snow free areas for the moose to graze, thus protecting them from the trains. 8

I went to my several Norwegian/English dictionaries and came up with this info. The following is my answer to Sharon. Julefest means Christmas Festival and Juletrefest is an after Christmas party when the Christmas tree is relighted and candies, cookies are taken from the tree and eaten. Jultrfest is a misspelling. Many lodges use either Julefest or Juletrefest. I did notice in both of my Norwegian/English dictionaries that everything referring to Christmas is with Jule in front of the rest of the word except for Jul (Christmas), Julaften (Christmas Eve) and lille Julaften (December 23). Robert John Wagner – 2/10/1930 9

Jean Peters & Wagner in Broken Wagner with Natalie Wood Wagner & Jill Saint John Pauley Perrette & Wagner Lance (1954) 1960 In NCIS Robert John Wagner was born on February 10, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to Thelma Alvera Boe and Robert John Wagner, Sr. Thelma is of Norwegian descent and Senior is German descent. Thelma worked as an operator for the telephone company and Sr. was a traveling salesman. At 7 years old, Robert and his parents moved to Los Angeles. Even as a young boy he dreamed of becoming an actor. Robert attended some military academies and the Harvard School. He was the Senior Class President at Santa Monica High School in 1949. He worked at various jobs to help pursue his dream of acting. A talent scout discovered him while eating at a Beverly Hills restaurant with his parents. In 1950, he had his screen debut in “The Happy Years”. 20th Century Fox signed him up and helped him become a star. In the beginning of his career he played in romantic roles. But, in 1952 the movie “With a Song in My Heart” where he portrayed a shell shocked veteran, he was brought to the attention of the studio’s executives. After that he played in many title roles, including “Prince Valiant” (1954), “The True Story of Jesse James” (1957), etc. But, by 1963 after the movie “The Pink Panther” his career came to a standstill! (During a bathtub scene in “The Pink Panther” where he was submerged under industrial strength foam he became blind for 4 weeks!) So, after many years of no jobs, he became the star of the TV show “It Takes a Thief” from 1968 to 70. His greatest success on TV was the TV series “Hart to Hart” with co-star Stefanie Powers. “Hart to Hart” ran from 1979 to 84. He married 4 times, Natalie Wood from 12/28/57 to 4/27/62, when they divorced, Marion Marshall from 7/21/63 to 4/26/71 (divorced), Natalie Wood 7/16/72 to 112/29/81 (she passed away) and Jill Saint John 5/26/90 to the present. He is the father of 2 daughters, Katie Wagner, born in 1964 to Marion Marshall and Courtney Wagner, born 1974 to Natalie Wood. Robert and Jill have acted together in 7 movies and, of course, starred together in “Hart to Hart”. They presented an idea for a TV show to Producer, Aaron Spelling, which became the ABC TV series “Charlie’s Angels”. Robert now plays Tony Di Nozzo’s father on NCIS, every so often. He has 2 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He wrote the autobiography “Pieces of My Heart” and dedicated the book to his mother, sister, daughters, Katie & Courtney, stepdaughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner and his wife, Jill. He wrote in the dedication that they were the meaning of his life. Robert became a grandfather on 9/21/2006, when Katie gave birth to her son, Riley John. Note of Interest: Jill St. John, Natalie Wood and Stefanie Powers were childhood friends and attended ballet classes together. Small World! Also, at one time or another, he dated Yvonne DeCarlo, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, Anita Ekberg, Shirley Field and Joan Collins! He was busy! One of his best friends was Eddie Albert and his wife, Margo.

January 1, 2016 Dear Valued Supporters, Old and New: The 2016 Third District Convention Committee is proud to announce that our 64

th Biennial Convention will be held only

6 months from now - June 8-12, 2016. To make this Third District Meeting and Convention a success there needs to be a balance between business meetings and

fun for everyone. With this venue and events planned we have been able to do just that. This convention is set to be

affordable, enjoyable, enlightening, and all-encompassing for the delegates, non-delegates families and friends. The Convention will be at the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes, 8121 Amalfi Place, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 29572. This occasion gives us the opportunity to meet old friends, celebrate making new ones and conduct the business of Sons

of Norway. The theme of this Third District Meeting and Convention is “Promote Heritage * Preserve Culture”. Needless to say, such an undertaking doesn’t just happen. For those of you who have served on committees and have tried

to raise funds you know how difficult and time consuming it is. You will be hearing more about this meeting/convention in the following months. You will be asked to support your Third

District through journal ads, sponsorships, boosters and Viking auction donations. Please consider these requests and know the organizing committee is working very hard to provide you with the best

possible experience during this June Convention. The committee thanks you in advance and looks forward to seeing you at the convention in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. If you have any questions you are welcome to contact any chairperson on the committee and we will get you the answer

Accepts your lodge’s recognition and awards

Attends all delegate sessions, zone meeting and votes on behalf of your lodge

May serve on a committee if asked to by the District President

A delegate is the only member (along with current District 3 Board Members) that can run for the District Board.

A delegate can run for a delegate spot for the International Lodge Meeting if they are a benefit member or if they purchase a benefit

product at the convention.

Learn about Sons of Norway by attending workshops, visiting displays and visiting with other members

Bring back many ideas, activities and enthusiasm that will benefit your lodge

Report to your lodge about what they learned, business conducted and report on elections held at the convention

The committee has established four objectives for our event:

1. Establish a schedule early and a map of event locations,

2. Increase family participation and attendance,

3. Every lodge in the District send delegates,

4. Increase participation in cultural arts and recreation activities,

(3) YES, we want attendees to bring their families make this an extended vacation to enjoy Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area

There are a few items that are still in the development stage at this time. But as you can see the Convention Committee has everything

on track.

Convention Schedule To make the 64th Sons of Norway Third District Meeting and Convention a success there needs to be a balance between business

meetings and fun for everyone. With this venue and events planned we have been able to do just that. This convention is set to be

affordable, enjoyable, enlightening, and all-encompassing for the delegates, non-delegates families and friends.

Monday and Tuesday – Committees arrive and start to deliberate. Registrations begin. Wednesday night --The plan is to start on Wednesday June 8th, with the Memorial Service at 4 pm followed by conversation and

congeniality cash bar, then on to the Low-Country Picnic/President’s reception. Then how about we play a little with a KUBB

tournament, Lawn games, Ping-pong, beach music,etc.

Thursday --This is the first day of Delegate Assembly Session. Don’t forget your coffee……

The folk art/cultural skills exhibit will be open to delegates. Walking through the exhibition and seeing all the amazing pieces of

artwork is always a great way to spend some free time. There will be rosemaling pieces, woodcarvings, woven art and so much more!

And remember every piece you see was created by a Sons of Norway member. The high level of artistry and craftsmanship of our

members is always a source of pride. This is an opportunity that if you see something you think you’d like to try the Sons of Norway

offers a Cultural Skills Program which is free to members. We hope to have a great group of vendors to patronize. They will be here

till Saturday morning. Convention tee-shirts for adults and the little ones. Don’t forget our District 3 Challenge this evening with

entertaining games to play. Winning a game is always fun, but winning an easy game is nowhere near as satisfying as coming out on

top in a challenging game.

Friday –This night brings everyone together for a great “VIKING AUCTION”. There are 25 tickets given to delegates and non-

delegates in their tote bags as part of their package. Of course they are welcome to increase their chances of winning a great prize with

the purchase of more tickets for the auction. Remember proceeds help to support the Third District Charitable Trust.

Saturday --After spending three days together, the last evening of a District Convention is a special night. The Installation of new

officers is always a meaningful ceremony not to be missed. There will be a banquet and dance held to celebrate the last evening

together. There will be a social hour, followed by the banquet, presentations of awards and then the dance. This is always a fun night

for everyone as friends, both old and new, spend one last evening together before going home.

District Sons of Norway Meeting and Convention. Although it is a distance in the future, we believe that you might be interested in

information about the area and consider coming to the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area either as a delegate to the convention or an

Noreg had a successful Scandinavian Fair in November. They have elected new officers. They will not meet in January and February, but, will continue their Sunday music and cultural programs. Fredheim had their Christmas party at the embassy suites on December 12th and will join Hudson Valley Lodge for a winter weekend. Their new meeting place is at the Marine Corps League.

Nor Bu had their Yulefest Celebration on December 19th and they will continue their Sunday dinners at the cabin. Nansen had their brunch with Santa and Christmas party with Santa Lucia in December. They will install their officers in December at their anniversary meeting. Bernt Balkin had their Christmas Celebration and are shutting down for January and February and will resume in March. Pleasant Point enjoyed their Christmas Dinner Theatre and will install the new officers in February. We are trying to join with other lodges for a weekend in LOV in February.

Zone 4 – Kari Williams – Director

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL, WISH ALL LODGES IN DISTRICT 3 THE BEST IN 2016!. Zone 4 lodges have all celebrated Christmas and are planning their schedules for 2016, with 3 lodges having elected new officers for 2016/2017 and will plan installations in the new year. NORSEMEN LODGE 3-572: Lodge will have installation of Officers on January 9th, 2016 in Oneonta. TROLL LODGE 3-476: The Lodge will install their officers on Friday, March 11th, 2016 in Mahopac. SCANDINAVIAN HERITAGE LODGE 3-433: The Lodge is still trying to find new officers. They are planning a Lutefisk and Meatball Dinner on January 23, 2016 with a silent auction. NORRONA LODGE 3-467: The Lodge will not have a meeting in January 2016. HUDSON VALLEY LODGE 3-432: Friday, January 8th to Sunday, January 10th is Winter Weekend at Winter Clove Resort in Round Top, NY. The Children’s Christmas Party will be held on Saturday, January 9th at the Resort. OSLO LODGE 3-438: The lodge’s annual “SOUPER BOWL” meeting will be held in January. Zone 5 – Gail Martinsen – Director

So far I hear that the whole 3rd District has been blessed with beautiful weather! Early this morning, I went to do some last minute shopping and had come back into the house to put a jacket over my sweater! Either it is cold out or maybe I’m just getting spoilt by the normal Florida weather! But, in 1997 when Ron & I both had moved here from Long Island there were a few days when it was cold and we even had snow! Even though the snow didn’t last very long on the ground! All of Florida’s lodges are preparing for the installation of their 2016 officers this month.

Gateway to Florida had a catered Scandinavian Julefest with Norwegian appetizers, a Roast Pork meal with all the sides and a surprise dessert. The members were entertained with live music by Bonnie Harman and their special guest was Santa. They all enjoyed the Santa Lucia pageant. Congrats to Gateway’s women’s bowling team for becoming District 3’s “Ace” Women’s Bowling Team!! Gulf Coast Vikings members enjoyed a catered Juletrefest and members brought desserts to share. The 5th Avenue Barbershop Quartet entertained them with Christmas carols. Gulfstream’s Julefest was preceded with a short business meeting. A traditional roast pork dinner was served. As in previous meetings the members donated food to help the local food pantry. Gulfstream donated $100.00 to 3 wonderful local charities, the Treasure Coast Hospice, the Treasure Coast Food Bank and Dogs and Cats Forever (a no kill shelter in Fort Pierce). The donation to Dogs and Cats Forever was made in honor of Sally Berquist. Sally will be sorely missed by so many she was such a dedicated and caring woman! The Nordic Ladies Group didn’t have a meeting in December. The lodge members will be meeting at a new location, the Elks Lodge in Port Saint Lucie starting in January. Lauderdale met at the Norwegian Seaman’s Church in Davie. I’m sure that they enjoyed a fabulous traditional Norwegian dinner made by their famous chef, Willy Hansen. Sarasota celebrated their Juletrefest at the Sara Bay Country Club with a catered roast pork dinner and riskrem for dessert. All of their positions for the 2016 lodge officers are filled except for the President! They are asking for any volunteers willing to take on the responsibility of the office. Scandia celebrated Christmas with a catered Julebord at The Club at Longshore Lake in Naples. A dinner of pork loin with fruit, lemon chicken, sides, gløgg, 7 varieties of cookies and riskrem med bær was enjoyed by all attending. The Space Coast Vikings lodge supplied the all of the food and drink at their Christmas Celebration! A roast pork dinner was served at President Janet Carlin’s clubhouse. Guess what the Suncoast members ate at their Julefest? You guessed it, roast pork with all the trimmings! Members brought desserts to share. Everyone sang Christmas carols while dancing around the Christmas tree and they shared stories about different Christmas traditions. At Sun Viking’s Juletrefest a catered meal was served with traditional roast pork including potatoes, rødkål and surkål. (The caterers donate all the leftover food to a local homeless shelter.) Members made the rødkål and surkål plus the members brought cookies and riskrem. Members and guests brought toys for the Toys for Tots, food for the needy and items for the troops deployed overseas. The food was donated to the local Salvation Army. Like every other year, the members were very generous with their donations (831 items large and small were collected)! The Tampa Bay members celebrated their Julefest at the IKEA located in Tampa with a traditional Scandinavian Christmas meal. Vikingworld Orlando celebrated their Annual Christmas program with a pot luck dinner made of Norwegian dishes and desserts for their Julebord. A sliced ham was supplied by the lodge. They were entertained with instrumental music, plus, they sang Christmas carols in both Norwegian & English while dancing around the Christmas tree. The members were asked to bring one or more Christmas ornaments to decorate their tree. Everyone enjoyed a gift exchange and a visit from their special guest, Santa!

Zone 7 – Dirk Hansen – Director 17

At the time of this writing several of our zone 7 lodges have celebrated the past weekend with their annual

Juletrefests. I hope everyone in attendance had a great time. I attended the Southern Star event and it was very

well attended and everyone had fun. Temperatures at party time were in the low eighties and sunny so weather

was not an issue. I love the south! During the festivities, a pair of Kong Tinn beer mugs where presented to the

lucky winners (Unn Nilsen and Alice Vivian ) as part of a Land of the Vikings fund raiser. Close to 500 dollars

was raised.

Norsk Carolina and Blafjell Lodges, also, held their Christmas events this past weekend. From the pictures

posted on Facebook it looks like our Charlotte lodge had a great time and the food looks delicious. It was

particularly encouraging to see how many children were in attendance. This bodes well for the future of their

lodge and is a testament to Ruth Campbell’s strong and enthusiastic leadership. Blafjell pictures conveyed the

same impressions to me. I wish I could have attended more than one event this past Saturday.

Back in late November, I was able to attend Blafjell’s salute to Veterans meeting. Sharon and her team went

all out to honor the veterans who served and now serve Sons of Norway. It was a very uplifting and patriotic

meeting featuring a guest speaker on the 99th

Viking Battalion.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without the annual Scandinavian Christmas Fair in Raleigh North Carolina.

President Mike Tilder invited me to attend and it was a great time. Our Sons of Norway Lodge in Raleigh had

the prime location at the festival entrance for selling all sorts of Scandinavian food and souvenirs and it looks

like another good year for the lodge.

The new lodge forming in Atlanta, Trondheim Lodge is getting some traction and I have been told they are

getting close to the halfway point to becoming chartered. Ralph Peterson from Hampton Roads has offered

some good strategies to help them along and I would encourage any of you who read this and have experience

with forming a new lodge or a strong background in lodge recruitment to contact me with any of your thoughts

Norsk Carolina Jultrefest

Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Ski for Light program for 2016 The NEPA (Northeast Pennsylvania) Regional Ski for Light (SFL) program for 2016 will be held at the Sky Lake Camp and Retreat Center (http://www.skylakecenter.org/) from February 21 through February 28, 2016. Sky Lake has both wooded trails and a large lake that, if frozen and snow covered, is ideal for skiing or snowshoeing. The NEPA program is a Regional arm of the larger Ski for Light, Inc. (http://www.sfl.org/) program. We pair a blind or visually impaired person with a sighted guide for fun in the snow: i.e. cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, etc. If you can't join us for the entire week, come for a day or several days and see what fun we have in the snow. Change of schedule for lodge meetings at Noreg Lodge January – February --- Lodge will be closed. March – December – General meetings will be held on the first Saturday afternoon at 2PM. They will now have meetings during the summer months. Installation of officers will be the First meeting in

March. Socials will be held on the 3

rd Saturday at 2PM each month – except July and August when the Social will be

combined with the general meeting.
