Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is aprocess of making a three-dimensional solidobject of virtually any shape from a digitalmodel. 3D printing is achieved usingan additive process, where successive layersof material are laid down in different shapes.

Additive Manufacturing: The term additivemanufacturingrefers to technologies that

create objects through a sequential layeringprocess. Objects that are manufacturedadditively can be used anywhere throughoutthe product life cycle,

    Modeling:Additive manufacturing takes virtual

blueprints from computer aided design(CAD)or animationmodeling softwareand "slices"them into digital cross-sections for themachine to successively use as a guideline forprinting.

    Printing:

To perform a print, the machine reads the

design and lays down successive layers of liquid, powder, or sheet material to build the modelfrom a series of cross sections. These layers, which correspond to the virtual cross sectionsfrom the CAD model, are joined together orautomatically fused to create the final shape. The primary advantage of this technique is itsability to create almost any shape or geometricfeature.

Finishing :Though the printer-produced resolution is

sufficient for many applications, printing aslightly oversized version of the desiredobject in standard resolution, and thenremoving material with a higher-resolutionsubtractive process can achieve a higher-resolution

Several different 3D printing processes havebeen invented since the late 1970s. Theprinters were originally large, expensive, andhighly limited in what they could produce.

A number of additive processes are now

available. They differ in the way layers aredeposited to create parts and in the materialsthat can be used. Some methods melt orsoften material to produce the layers.

Each method has its own advantages and drawbacks, and some companies consequently offer a choicebetween powder and polymer for the material from

which the object is built. The main considerations inchoosing a machine are generally speed, cost of the3D printer, cost of the printed prototype, and cost andchoice of materials and color capabilities

Printers that work directly with metals are expensive. In some cases, however, less expensive printers can beused to make a mould, which is then used to makemetal parts.
