Method of creating 3D OBJECTS from a digital file.

Additive Manufacturing.

Opens up new opportunities for mass customization.

WHAT IS IT?

Page 3: 3D Printing

“A passive consumer to an active creator !”

MAKING IT HAPPEN.1. Create a CAD model: Ready-made design

(Internet) or Own CAD design2. Convert CAD model to .STL file format3. Execute the slicing software4. Print the desired model !

Regardless of what printing or slicing technologies are employed , ANY 3D object can be printed in the following manner:

+Printing TechniquesThere are several methods of 3D printing , but the most widely used process is :

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)• Uses Thermoplastic filament which is

heated to its melting point. • Extruded layer by layer to create 3D

object

Page 8: 3D Printing

+HOW FDM WORKS ?

FDM printers use 2 kinds of materials:1. Modeling material , which constitutes the final

product.2. Binder , which supports the object being printed.

During printing ,• Binder , in the form of filaments is

unwound from the coil & fed through an extrusion nozzle which melts the filaments and extrudes them on the base.

Page 9: 3D Printing

+Contd...

• Nozzle & base controlled by a computer that translates the dimensions of an object into X,Y & Z coordinates the nozzle and base follow this during printing.

• Extrusion nozzle moves horizontally , vertically draws cross-section of the object.

• Thin layer of plastic cools & hardens binds to the layer beneath.

• Base is lowered ! Room for next layer of plastic.

Motor Vehicles:• Spare parts can be printed

out !• printed cars !

Many MNCs like the BMW , Boeing , F1 group utilize 3D PRINTING for printing out their vehicle parts !

WORLD’S FIRST 3D PRINTED FORMULA RACE CAR TESTED

IN HOCKENHEIMFor those who have doubted 3D printing durability and what could be built with the technology, the news about 3D printed formula car might come as a shock. 16 student engineers from a Belgium based Group T hit the headlines with “Areion” – World’s first formula car made almost entirely of 3D printed parts.

Consumer Goods:

• Almost anything from toys to intricate design articles can be printed !

• Makes teaching easy !• Prototype making made easy ! Architects ,

Engineers can now easily build models of the required design !

Medical:

• Prosthetic limbs for handicapped.• 3D printed organs, making wonders !• Face reshaping, rebuilding !

Fashion Industry3D printing has also revolutionized the fashion industry.

As you can see, the costume worn by the model is a 3D printed attire, put together 17 separate 3D printed parts.

3D PRINTING OPEN SOURCE REVOLUTION

• The RepRap project , a British initiative to develop a 3D printer capable of printing its own components !

• RepRap is an acronym for Replicating Rapid Prototyper !

• As an OPEN DESIGN , all designs produced by the project are released under a FREE SOFTWARE LICENSE.

Page 27: 3D Printing

• The aim of the project is to make 3D printers affordable and available to a large population .

• The RepRap 3D printing kits start at a cost of Rs.30K in contrast to the commercial 3D printers that start off at a huge Rs.6 lakh !
