A stereo display (also 3D display) is a display device capable of conveying depth perception to the viewer by means of stereopsis for binocular vision.
As the cinematic experience radically changed from B&W to colour and the current 3D/4D/6D, so did the TVs in our homes. Bulky TV sets have given way to slim LCD and LEDs TVs—more recently, those equipped with 3D technology.
Overview
How your eyes sees in 3D?
Hold your finger about an arm length in front of your face, stair and close your right eye and then left eye..what you notice?
Brain uses a process called Stereopsis to translate these two images to depth perception
Evolution• The early history of stereoscopy began at the same time and place as the birth of
modern photography in the mid nineteenth century. • One of the first cameras was developed to take 3D photographs by taking two
pictures of the same scene from slightly different angles.• Hollywood would grab hold of the technology in the early 1950s, and begin the
first ‘Golden Age of 3D’• In the past few years, the future of 3D tech has been growing brighter and
brighter. Since the wild success of Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert from Disney and Avatar, another brainchild of James Cameron, major production companies have fully embraced 3D technology, and theaters capable of presenting features in 3D are spreading steadily.
• Recent game releases such as Gran Turismo 5 and Call of Duty: Black Opshave been released with full 3D support
• Microsoft’s new Kinect controlling device for the XBOX 360 is actually a 3D camera setup.
Narendra Modi’s 3D Avatar
Ahmedabad, Nov 19: NarendraModi set a new trend by addressing people in Gujarat in 3D avatar on Sunday, Nov 19. He held public meetings simultaneously at 53 places and created a special niche for himself thereby creating a world record
World's First 3D Printer!
Researchers at Germany’s Doppelbock University just opened the door to the future of rapid prototyping technology by developing the world’s first 3D-printed 3D printer!
The duplicitous device is capable of using readily available materials to create copies of itself – albeit at a slightly smaller scale.
Best of all, it’s outfitted with a built-in material re-processor that can convert virtually any carbon-based substance into filament for 3d-printing.
3D Printer to Create World's Smallest F1 Car You generally expect an F1 car to be more impressive
than the one you’re seeing below. However, this F1 is not what it appears to be. This little replica was created in just four minutes at the Vienna University of Technology using the world’s fastest 3D printer. The vehicle measures just a mere 0.285mm in length.
Polarized (Passive) 3D
More modern choice for 3D Allows color viewing Two synchronised projectors project two respective
views onto the screen, each with a different a polarization.
The glasses allow only one of the images into each eye because they contain lences with different polarization
The brain does the hard work again combining two separate images into a single 3D one
Used in most today 3D theatres
Active-Shutter 3D
There is a battery in it The TV rapidly flash alternating left-
eye and right-eye video frames at 120times per second
Though the glasses you will see a one picture for each eye one at a time, But the left/right video images alternate so quickly that you percive afull, three-dimensional view.
Images looks great Used at Home Theatres
Anaglyph red/ blue Use technique called Anaglymphor
colour filtering One picture will display in blue and
the other in red The red lenses block the red image
and the blue lenses block the blue image
Advantage Cheap and easy
Disadvantage: The image quality is not as
nearly as good as with the polarized system
Free-Glass 3D Technology
It is also called auto-stereoscopy Auto-stereoscopy displays different
pixels to each eye Using optics (lenses or barring) to
direct pixels to each eye But has one major problem:
Maximum 6 viewpoints, low quality comparing to LCD and plasma
Application
3D displays have become critical for many applications, including, entertainment, flight simulation and trainingWhen correctly implemented, stereoscopic 3D video displays can provide significant benefits in many areas, such as Medical and Scientific visualization such as in Endoscopy and other Medical imaging Remote-control vehicles and tele-manipulators, command and control.Molecular modelling, 3D computer graphics, 3D visualization, and video- based training.
Pros and ConsThe main advantage of the 3D technology is that you can feel as if the objects you see on your TV or monitor screen come out of the screen heading your way offering you a sensational movie watching or gaming experience.
Yet there are some Disadvantages of 3D Technology. Massive headache, Eye stress! No High Definition available: Showing 3D content in 1080i High Definition is not possible It is Dangerous!
Some risk of kids under 6 pr 8 while using 3Ds potential impact on growth of children eyes Can effect older people in different ways
3D movies not for all: Yes it is true that everyone cannot see 3D content
Future Work
Future Work Toshiba Tech (Laptops- TVs)
Laptops Sony VAIO F-Series Powerful 3D Acer Aspire 5738DG TriDEF 3D Alienware 3D enanled M17x
Conclusion
Like or not, 3D is coming and just like HD before it, there will be plenty technology pandits predicting its demise
Like any other new technology, 3D is not without its potential risks and of course studies have to be done to determine the long-term effects of usage, if any.
For now, though, it must be sufficient to inform yourself of the principles behind it and make your own decision
Acknowledgement
We deem it a pleasure to acknowledgment my deep sense of gratitude to Ms. Srima Nandi, Asst. Professor, Dept of HU and Social Science, who directed & guided me with her timely advice and constant inspiration, which eased the task of completing this technical Presentation. We wish to reciprocate the full measure the kindness shown by Mr. Sumit Varsani who encourage me and inspire me in successfully completing this technical report. We must say that no height is ever achieved without some sacrifice made at same end and it is here I owed our special debt to my parents and family members for showing their love and patience throughout this entire period of time.
