A 16 Island Moon October 4, 2012 By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Three Chords and the Truth Wanted: More Music from the Moon… I mentioned in my last column that Dale Rankin and I are planning to produce a CD of music unique to our part of the world. I was pleasantly surprised when a half dozen local musicians immediately contacted me and wanted to jump on board… heck I just surprised there were a half dozen people out there that actually read my column. But in case you missed it, here’s what I wrote: The Islands and Corpus Christi are home to a lot of musical talent that produces a variety of original music from country to calypso. So we have decided to produce a CD to showcase that talent. We are looking to put together a CD of songs from musicians who represent our islands and the Coastal Bend so we can share our music with listeners across the state and country. The plan is to assemble a compilation of original songs performed by musicians and bands from Port A, Padre, Corpus, Rockport and all points in between and bring it all together in one package. The music we are envisioning will transcend genres and paint a picture of the abundant talent unique to our area. We don’t want any cover songs… it must be something original. We’ll take care of the studio recording and make it worth your while in a fair and non- greedy way. Mainly, the reason we’re doing this is to bring exposure to the wealth of talent we feel so strongly about. So, contact me (my email address is at the top of this page) if you are interested and help spread the word to our fellow musicians out there. We are thinking about fifteen songs, here. Let us hear from you. So now, the plan is to first figure out who and what songs we want on this CD. We will continue to spread the word for a while and collect as many songs and options as we can. Please tell all your musician friends about our plan and tell them to contact us. One problem so far is that some people don’t have a recording of their song to send me and will have to actually perform it live for us. That’s no problem. You can easily find me at one of the open mics held at the Tarpon Ice House in Port A every Tuesday and Sunday. Or just make a cell phone video and email it to me. Whatever works. We figure that when we get enough material that it’s time to decide what to record, we’ll form a committee of local big shots to make some decisions. I think this project is going to be a lot of fun and will bring some great publicity to our music. I can see a series of CD’s through the years and maybe even some themes (Christmas, Surfing, Hurricanes, etc). But right now, the goal is to submit your songs. So do it. I’ll be waiting. Open Mic every Sunday with Uel Jackson & Billy Snipes… The Sunday open mic over at the Tarpon Ice House has had a facelift recently. Rockin’ Ricke Burnett has decided to take a break from the weekly commitment and has handed it over to Uel Jackson and Billy Snipes. What this means is that the complexion of the jam will now take a more acoustic turn. The jam starts each week at around 6:00 p.m. Last Sunday was Uel and Billy’s first attempt and it went swimmingly. These guys have a natural chemistry going and their combined repertoire is huge. The entertainment is top shelf and I highly recommend it. And the rains came… I had planned to report on the Davin James show at the Back Porch last weekend but Mother Nature had a different plan. It was my friend Marilyn Sullivan’s birthday and we all met at the Porch to celebrate, only to sit around and dodge rain flurries…that and watch Davin set up then break down when the rain refused to cooperate. By the way, I recently got a sneak peek at Edwin Meyer’s (Kody’s) new bar that’s going in across the street from Bernie’s and it is NICE! They have really done a lot of work on the place since it was Hook’s BBQ. I believe they are going to call it Diggitys. The wood mosaic walls that John Stevens has been working on look dynamite. I saw where the stage was planned for construction and am really excited about having a new live music venue in town. Edwin tells me it should be open in another month or two. HURRY UP!!! DO NOT MISS LIST Tonight at the House of Rock… There is a ton of stuff going on this weekend. Take a deep breath…here we go! Tonight, Thursday, October 4 th Rev. Horton Heat, Supersuckers, Pinata Protest and Switchblade Jesus will be at the House of Rock. That is one great show ladies and gentleman. The good Rev. Heat is originally from Corpus and his revved up punkabilly shows have been pulling in big crowds for over 20 years. Supersuckers are a wild rock band from Arizona that features the irreverent antics of madman, Eddie Spaghetti. Also on the bill, Pinata Protest (San Antonio, TX) is a mega cool accordion powered Tejano punk and roll band that I really look forward to seeing. There is a big buzz about these guys and my S.A. friends tell me they are great. Ziegfest 2012… Tomorrow, Friday, October 5 th Ziegfest 2012 kicks off at Whataburger Field with a chili cook-off and four bands: Party of Three (4:00), Neal Edwards (5:00), Whiskey D (6:45) and our buddy, the great Austin honky tonker Jesse Dayton (8:30). Then on Saturday Jesse will be back to open the fest at 4:30 for the Ian Moore Band (5:15), Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears (6:15), Shooter Jennings (7:15), Bob Schneider (8:15) and Pat Green (9:30). The show starts on Saturday at 3:45 with the battle of the bands winner, RESZ. This weekend in Port A… Tomorrow, Friday, October 5 th , Clay McClinton (Ft. Worth, TX) will play the Back Porch. McClinton is the son of the famous Texas roadhouse star, Delbert McClinton. I saw him perform earlier in the year and was most impressed. He has the pedigree, the energy and the chops to easily stand in his daddy’s shoes. Max Stalling (Dallas, TX) will bring his smooth as silk country show to the Third Coast Theater on Saturday. And also on Saturday, island fave, Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play his last island performance of the season at the Back Porch. It doesn’t get much better that this folks. Sharkey’s 12 th Annual Chili Cook-off & Music Fest… Sharkey’s Beach Club in Port A will hold their 12 th Annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 6 th . This perennial event goes to benefit the Jody McCormick Vocational Scholarship Fund. The musical line-up features local songbird, Melissa Brooke (Port Aransas, TX). I’m told Melissa has recruited the ample talents of guitarist L.Leon Sands and bassist Woodie Lawson. I saw Miss Brooke at SandFest last year and was more than impressed with this young lady’s talent. Also on the bill will be the dynamic Bonnie Lang (San Antonio, TX) and longtime island fave, Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters (San Antonio, TX). I also saw Bonnie Lang at SandFest last year and believe me, this gal done got some pipes. She’s a ball of fire. And it’s always a treat to see our old pal Todd Dorn back in town. He’s been winning fans here for many years with his island laid back country style. Be careful out there! And that’s the truth!
