ToM huck: bruTal TruThSThe Saint louis university Museum of art is pleased to present an exhibition featuring the woodcuts of nationally renowned

artist, Tom huck. Tom huck: brutal Truths opened with a reception on friday, february 18 and continues until april 17.

Brutal Truths will include more than 45 of Huck’s large-scale,

intricately complex woodcuts including

work from several of his major series including

Two Weeks in August: 14 Rural Absurdities; The Bloody Bucket; BLAB!,

and The Transformation of Brandy Baghead.

In many of his prints, Huck finds his inspira-tion in incredibly bizarre, but true occurrences that happened in his boyhood home of Potosi, MO. While the stories are true, Huck uses his printmaking prowess to exaggerate the details

and embellish the facts in his woodcuts that allow him to embrace his fervor for storytelling.

Tom Huck and his work have also been linked to the world of al-ternative comics with the work of R. Crumb, the legendary under-ground comics artist, serving as a source of inspiration for Huck.

abouT The arTiST:Tom Huck was born in 1971 and lived in Potosi, MO. He cur-rently resides in St. Louis and produces his woodcuts at his

Evil Print studio, also located in St. Louis.

FROM FODOR’S TRAVEL EXPERTS, TIPS TO KEEP YOUR TRAVELS GREEN AND THE EARTH CLEAN

1. Beware of green washing. Always book with hotels or tour companies who are legitimately touting either eco or sustainable tourism. There are various online watchdog agencies through which you can check.

2. Ask about the company’s green philosophies. Do they recycle? Are they energy efficient? How do they address water conservation and waste management? Have local materials been used in building your lodge? Does the menu in the dining room where you take meals use local ingredients?

3. Look into offsetting greenhouse gas emissions. If you have a choice, take trains over flying. If you must fly, try to take a non-stop flight. Go online to calculate your CO2 footprint.

4. Be sensitive to cultures and customs. Be clear on the tipping protocol before you travel. Don’t take photos without asking first. Don’t wear revealing clothing, especially in Muslim countries. When visiting religious sites, behave appropriately.

5. Never litter. Even if you see locals disposing of their garbage willy nilly, you should NOT follow suit.

6. Think small. Stay in a B&B or locally owned accommodation that benefits the local community.

7. Purchase local products whenever possible. However, purchasing tourist souvenirs made from animals (i.e. shells, horns, pelts, coral, etc.) is risky and aids in animal and environmental distinction and destruction.

8. Conserve resources. Use water sparingly and turn off lights when not in use.

9. Do not feed wild animals. You may think you’re doing them a favor, but your interference will only do them harm.

10. If you are camping, don’t leave anything behind but your footprint. Use only biodegradable products like soap, toothpaste, etc. in streams, lakes, etc and carrying out what you carried in.

how should i re-use printer cartridges? Get them refilled! Why not take your empty cartridges to be refilled? You can save up to 60% on the price of a new cartridge!

refill them yourself! Refilling ink jet cartridges is straightforward and can be done on a DIY basis, with a number of companies supplying the ink and refilling equipment. When buying your printer, choose one that uses cartridges that can be easily refilled or that can easily accept generic or refilled cartridges.

what else can i do with them? Donate them! Lots of charities collect empty printer cartridges to raise money by refilling and reselling them. Take a look at the internet to find charities in your area that are collecting printer cartridges.

GREEN YOUR ROUTINE • PRINTER CARTRIDGESincreasingly, printer

cartidges are collected at local recycling centres but

are not collected from curb-side. however, there are

organizations & stores that will recycle them for you.
