Capital city of PétanqueMarseille is hosting each year the biggest international Petan-que tournament : La Marseillaise à pétanque. With more than 10 000 players and 200 000 spectators all along the competition you’ll easily understand that this disci-pline is part of Marseille way of living !

But, do you really know what pétanque is ? [petãk] nf: Pétanque is a form of boules where the goal is to toss or roll hollow steel balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground. The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel. The current form of the game originated in 1907 or 1910 in La Ciotat, in Provence, France. The French name pétanque comes from petanca in the Provençal dialect of the Occitan language, deriving from the expression pès tancats, meaning ‘feet fixed’ or ‘feet planted’ (on the ground).

So, it was impossible not to offer you the possibility to discover this sport discipline as you’ll spend a week in Marseille !Let’s meet on Wednesday afternoon for discovering or even performing and win the Medigames pétanque tournament !

Your stay in MarseilleKnown to the ancient Greeks and Romans as Massalia, Mar-seille is the oldest city in France and is the most important trad-ing centre in the region. Marseille is now France’s largest city on the Mediterranean coast and the largest port for commerce, freight and cruise ships.

All the wonderful features contribute to the well-being of local people and its 100% sure that you will also feel great here! The key attraction of Marseille is the city itself - the atmosphere, flux and throbbing beat of a big port city. The place lives and works essentially in the present, and has done for the past two and a half millennia. Almost despite itself, though, it has accumulat-ed a backlog of culture – to which Marseille’s stint, in 2013 as European Capital of Culture has brought a certain amount of coherence and much pizzazz.

Marseille is not only a dense, interesting city but with nearly 9000 hectares of nature from land to sea, it will offer you amaz-ing possibilities of activities !

From L’Estaque to the calanques, Marseille has a 57km coastline dotted with nature sites and parks. Marseille’s ocean heritage includes the Iles du Frioul, Riou archipelago and the calanques from Callelongue to En-Vau. Further inland, Marseille has huge parks for family fun, including Parc Borély, the Parc du 26ème centenaire and Pastré. But Marseille’s real ‘green lung’ is the seven woods which ring the city and take in the Massif de l’Étoile and Garlaban.

PLACES TO VISIT IN MARSEILLE:• Notre Dame de la Garde• La canebière• The old Port• Le Panier • Saint-Victor Abbey• MUCEM• The vieille charité• If-Castle and Frioul Island
